This reminds me of the cheeseball movie Reign of Fire. In the final fight against the dragon the crazy American dives straight at it with a fire axe just like this, it was used prominently in the trailer. But the trailer doesn't show that the slowmo ends with the dragon just swallowing the dude and he's dead.
