Opinion Time: NSFW Fanarts (Patreon)

I would have a little question for you guys. What are you thinking about fanarts in NSFW topic in general? Yay, or nay? Does it count more as a bad influence, or it’s just a simple art form? Or NSFW fanarts are acceptable (in general, or for you) to a certain extent, or within certain borders? If you have any personal opinion about this topic, I’m listening. To tell truth, I have some difficulties, and I know usually I should do what I like, but it would help a lot if you could express your opinions =) 

My personal opinion is, the mature topic itself isn’t a bad thing at all. And because mostly I’m a NSFW artist, I can’t always avoid the urge to do something NSFW with the characters I like.  I have a few ideas between reasonable limits, but usually I didn’t draw many mature fanarts.

So what do you think about NSFW fanarts?

Sure, go ahead. NSFW stuff is always fun. I do have one caveat: personally, I dislike NSFW fanart of source material that is either very cutesy or very dark/serious. In those cases it just kinda feels... wrong?

i think it's normal) if artist wants so draw nsfw art with fandom characters - why not? there are tons of fan pictures for each fandom, and if someone does not like nsfw - he can always find something different)

I believe NSFW is a great work of art because it's puts the ecstasy of sex and the vivid colors of a painting all together and everyone has a different thing. I follow various though if I had to pick a top artist It'd be Elton Portilho; he has such a good style of cartoony furry art with busty sexy ladies, muscled up men with "interesting" package, and intense sexual positions (like real hardcore or gangbangs/double penetration), with all that the way he draws them, colors them, and shades them is icing on the cake that's so pretty to look at while at the same time be very sexually hot. So again I love the NSFW category with my favorite artists for both viewing and pleasure (though I may be specific or one-sided as I really prefer Male/Male/Female)

As a wise person always told me: "do what you love until someone pays you for it." You just keep doing what you enjoy. If its nsfw or sfw, I think you have plenty of people willing to support and enjoy both! <3 As long as you enjoy, others will too.

First off, apologies for being so lax with commenting on all your sketches lately, they've been just wonderful, and I know every bit of fan interaction helps with motivation to keep going! I'll be more on top of that in the future :> As for NSFW illustrations, I'd say continue with it, but don't force yourself to be constantly drawing it for views! I know it tends to get a lot more attention than SFW, but it's easy to get burned out very quick drawing nothing but the same stuff till you're blue in the face xD I don't necessarily believe it's a bad influence though. There's some subjects that can be controversial, like nsfw of underage characters and such, but approach those sorts of things abiding by your own morals and without caving to pressure. The main thing about it all is to draw subjects that you know you will be happy with afterwards, because personal fulfillment matters most at the end of the day :> A bit tl;dr but I hope this helps man, keep doin' what you enjoy, we all love it to bits <333

What do you men by too cutesy? Like these chibi kinda things, when the characters look more like deformed dolls or stuffed animals, or something like that? And by dark/serious? Like gore, violence, or blood?

The last thing would be for me on the world to force NSFW arts, because when I can't put any heart in my works, they just turn out disastorus. And I would never draw NSFW just to get attention, because that always atracts people I could just not resonate. And I won't draw certain themes just because they are popular. I try to do my things so people can follow me for what I really am, so I won't have any regrets or guilt.

For stupid as it might seem i now notice that it's the very first result when searching "Fan Art And Copyright" on google. XD So yeah. Sometimes the right answer might very well be "Just search it". And the problem with NSFW stuff is that... well... porn is always treated badly wherever you go. "I am a porn star and i am being harassed" does not even ring a bell to many police deparments because if you are a porn star you might as well have sold your privacy and rights to a decent life to satan himself. And let's not talk about what happens with certain fetishes even the most common ones. So yes. 1) You are an artist. 2) You draw NSFW stuff. 3) You draw *fetish* NSFW stuff. If something happens legally related to your work and you want to defend yourself... :-\ yeah... you can see where i am going. You will basically get no support. I can understand the urge. You like something... but... wellllll... it's copyrighted... or it might even be associated with an existing person (such as a television character). So... where one draws the line? It is exactly because of this that the "china-works" exist. Sorry for the racial slur. It's what's called here in italy. Basically NSFW artists protect themselves by making the copy either a blatant parody or something blatantly "badly counterfeited". There are many people who hate those who blatantly counterfeit stuff that is "their property" (intellectual or not). And yes... for now the "bad counterfeit" seems to be the only (very thin) protection one can try to hold. Something that references the original character but gets several things wrong. On purpose. As to not get sued. Only if you do that you get basically drawn into "the despicables"... so yes. Whatever you do it is a lose/lose scenario, which is also why many NSFW artists end up referencing each other or people they can contact. You might try and contact ... uh... i dunno... Disney... to see if you can draw a furry character dressed as Zora doing "the nasty"... but yeah... i doubt you can get their blessing. You might try and contact warner brothers to get the permission to use the harry potter clothes on your fanart (J. K. Rowling had nothing to do with the actual looks, as she always just used the word "robes" in her books) but yeah... you might just use the first two letters of Rowling's monicker. So yes, some people don't care... but usually fanart, especially NSFW stuff... can only be defensible (and barely at that) if you either get no money for doing it or... well... you keep very well hidden that you are being paid for it. I don't really know how Patreon would be considered. Technically you are not getting paid to work. Just to exist as an artist. We pay you per month. Not "per creation". The defense here is that we like you as an artist and want to pitch in on you and help you get by. Then, you reward us with your creations for sticking with you. However... if you set up a "per creation" payment, or you set up a "you can ask me commissions here" pledge level, and you reward that pledge level with a commission which is both a fan art and a NSFW one... yeah... hell can ensue. Also... stay away from raffles, especially "occasional ones" ones that are not clearly stated in pledge levels. They are technically "gambling" and those who either participate unknowingly or receive the raffle prizes might be asked by their governments to explain why they participated in a paid gamble. Which is still illegal in many countries. So people do not know they are pledging to something that rewards "at random" and cannot avoid being part of something that is illegal in their country of origin. (we are talking penal law here). Yes laws do make everything less fun and really really scary at times. This is why many large corporations seem to be "very evil". Sometimes it *is* the mindset. Sometimes they are working with draconian laws. Stuff that says: "Sorry but if too many people use X and X is not made by you, then it is by our laws now public domain. And if it is public domain you cannot ask to be contacted for making it nor you can ask your share of the cake from people who make X" And sometimes "X" is all their living (see the case of J. K. Rowling, pictured as an evil woman in the linked article)

Wow, I don't think there could anything be said about the topic, you basically touched everything :D Honestly, I never planed to make money with fanarts (nor SFW nor NSFW), I was just curious what you think about NSFW fanarts in general, as something I might make in my free time, not for patreon, not for money. I always wanted to make my content to be mine and original. I think it would kind of like "robbing" people if I only built my patreon (or my entire life, because I see people like that) to fanarts. It's always easier to build on something existing than to actualy work things out by yourself. I guess it's just too much work for a lot of people... I like fanarts, and I'm sure I make some here and there (like the Wonder Stella vote winner this month), but I want to ensure that at least 50% of it is mine alone. It's still a fanart, but at least I can be a fan in my own way :D So don't worry, I'm not planing to ever make money from fanarts, but thank you again for your consern in the subject :)

You are already making money from it on account that there is fanart you made that you get paid for. Either via commission of via Patreon. As i said your defense in using Patreon is that you get paid "Per Month" rather than "Per Creation". So you can easily say "It's my fans chipping in and i release this stuff to them for free. Now. People *WILL* say that it is not for free if one has to pay, but you have other free sites where you display your artwork. So yeah. You can defend yourself with that too. Remember. If you are old enough to get paid. You are old enough to get sued. And US is the birthplace of internet and also of "Mary Suing" were it is extremely commonplace. I've recently seen a guy devastated because he was working on a game on what thought to be a totally legitimate OC from a colleague. And as he started making posters and wallpapers of the game for the internet he got filed. Turns out that the "totally legitimate OC" was an edited thing from another artist. So he had to shut down the game he had slaved on for 4 years. He was left in tatters. Reputation ruined because once you lose or settle a lawsuit of this kind you can never do professional work for any legitimate company and you will either go freelance or work on a "per commission" basis with no more income and healthcare (in the US) whatsoever. Another game company got recently sued by their composer which claimed IP rights on the music that was created on commission for their game. And the game company ended up having to remove every single instance of the music from their game and have now a game that is being sold without music. So yes. Sometimes you get shafted even when you think you are doing everything right and by the numbers. Which is why you should never get just one reference and always check that the "reference" was either made by the commissioner or the commissioner does admit that he's using somebody else's artwork and does accept that you will not do a perfect likeness. Also check that the OC is truly theirs or build it up with them. And always be wary of scary people with hair triggers. Because the law is scary even if you do "socially acceptable" stuff. And for furry NSFW artists... yeah. I hate this kind of situation. I do understand the people that want to protect themselves via the law but sometimes there is no ill intent. Heck sometimes you even paid fair and square for the use, and still you get shafted. And unluckily people, especially judges, will always assume ill intent. Because you might be innocent or have no ill intent, but the law does not accept ignorance for an excuse and even if you have no ill intent, just because you are making money from art judges will assume you are getting paid for every scrap of paper that has a doodle on it. So. Some people just run out of the law and will give middle fingers to it all. I can understand them, but i personally do not approve. I like what you do more. So be wary, and carry on.

Aye, chibi characters and just very cartoony and/or stylized things. Few recent examples that come to mind: Hollow knight, Prequel (webcomic) NSFW fanart, for example, I've always found odd. Undertale maybe as well. But honestly, I don't really mind – if I don't like it I can just not look at it. As for dark/serious – now that I think of it, I've got no good example. I'm sure I could come up with a concrete one if I thought long enough. Probably should've had an example ready, oops. Violence and blood in NSFW stuff alright, though!

I'll speak only for my self here, i love your art and your general art direction you've taken over time, even your most explicit work have a tasteful touch. NSFW fanart is more than acceptable in my opinion. sex is part of life and these characters even in fiction must and should have a sexuality. as long as your having fun drawing it why would you refrain yourself (well except maybe for copyright issues)
