every memory from the first five years of my life, in poem form

this was bound to happen after reading all that damned freud. i've spent three weeks logging every early childhood memory i have and these are them. the challenge was in doing real remembering which is not always so easy (only specific moments were allowed, inside-the-body-pov, not general situational recollection or scenes from home movies i misattributed to memory). themes of shame, nudity, and, uh, computer, and zoobook. though overall way fewer of the memories are 'negative' than i thought they'd be (not even half). was fun to both stay true to the chronology and try to write a good poem at once. what does any of this mean? beats me. also fetish reveal iykyk. 9/11 was clearly simply not a concern of mine

(p.s. i only just realized today's the childhood memory escapril prompt!!! i didn't write this for the prompt. a genuine coincidence. how strange)

The chokehold my discipline card had on me as a kid, such power for a small piece of paper

am *loving* this…and honestly think you can take it further (ie, it doesn't feel finished yet). oh, and "the girl is made of sorry" is seriously epic!! PS - if you haven't read jung's "memories, dreams, reflections," i highly recommend it, because, as you probably know, he was jung's prize disciple and had a falling out with him, which is something he discusses in that book…ya know, so as to get the "other side." ;) PPS - if you haven't tried v.5 of theWOPE poetry editor, i ran this through both the old version and the new, and the comments from the new one are shoulders and heads above: danielletx.com/theWOPE

i think you're right. i'm imagining further parts entirely..prose sections..long poem i tried mdr..i think it was last year? i remember floundering feeling contextless annoyed and gave up haha but now that i've gotten my freud education i think it is time to try it again for sure

sj

this is such a fun idea for a poem i love it.. the world is ruined for a long time… yeahhh man im shaking ur hand rn… happy sixth year of escapril… my annual creative cleanse fr

I read the title while drunk at the pub and just instantly went "ohno honey... oh..." because there's something so painful about such early memories

Anfisa Chernysheva

reading this was like a weird new therapy thing where you kinda don't see where it is going but find yourself bawling in the end

CJ The X

emotional emotional emotional at this

Danielle Brown

ugh! i meant that jung was *Freud's* prize disciple…

Jose Torres

I always wanted those zoobooks

savannah brown

omg also it was Not mdr it was modern man in search of a soul

sj

!! also just returning to say i was listening to real house by adrianne lenker just now -- giving me the same feeling.. not realising the gravity of moments in childhood etc...

Danielle Brown

confession: my autistic brain *did* spend some time scouring the web yesterday, trying to figure out how mdr was related…! ;) and, by way of PS, mod man is, hands-down, my *least* favorite book of his.

Really liked this, esp the public humiliation. Think about early memories a lot. Everything’s a bit too bright on first contact. Found a box once that said “should worst happen” when I was wee. Funny how long it takes sometimes to work out a joke.

rinion

all of these are worded amazingly but i'm finding myself really stuck on 12. Savannah, nobody reads that fast. core memory unlocked! even today i find people disbelieving my reading speed, but it was so much worse as a kid. makes me wonder how many other adults thought i was just pretending to read...

Toby

Loved reading through this collection of foundational memories. A newfound source of inspiration. The yearning for the past grows stronger with time ever progressing & internally ever changing, for recreational and resolutional purposes. This method of composing past moments (first instances of awareness :0) would compliment this well & would make for one hell of a writing session. Makes me wonder what interconnected themes would be unearthed. The tricky part though would be assembling them in chronological order I think. :) 5 made me lol and 13/22 made me feel particularly.

jonk

astounded at your memories predating age 5. I have maybe 2 or 3 and they are... fuzzy, to be generous about it.

David

I read the title and thought I have 0 memories pre-5 years old but once I read through some of these, it triggered some of my own memories. I think you need some way to figure out when a memory is from aside from guessing your age. Like if at school what classroom it was in or what house I was in etc then you can figure out your age. My list is still around 5 memories though, I enjoyed this

Nathan Baker

Many of these reminded me of my own memories. Many adults seem to not remember much of their childhood. I wonder how much I'm going to forget as I get older. It was novel though. I don't know when I was going to remember these again. Thanks for the reminder Sav

Nathan Baker

I remember being put in a crib in the nursery at church. I'm not sure how old I was

tana m

So incredible how I could become the little child that you were only by reading these words, ''I'm of a different kind...'' You became aware so soon too<3 Hugs to the little tiger enthusiast !!

savannah brown

!! i think that moment stuck because my teacher thought i was lying to get out of doing work..which was completely antithetical to my nature..was upset to be so misunderstood

Todd

Love the idea (and of course execution) of this. If you're enjoying Freud, I strongly recommend Jung (if you haven't already read him). His Red Book/Liber Novus is one of my favorite works of writing. I don't necessarily believe in his philosophy but still adore his work as literature.

cy

Switching from "she brushes her blonde mommy hair" to "I shit in the ectopic darkness" is such a Rollercoaster I love it

Thomas

I once had a friend that catalogued every emotion they ever had. They were often hyper specific to a moment but spoke to the history behind the feeling. This is wonderfully similar.

Osmomosis

Wow. Each one was so vivid. I kinda want to try this. I do have a couple memories before 5, but I've never really thought of documenting them. Maybe I'll try to capture their essence like this, or in some other medium.
