hello! welcome to the first in-the-swing-of-things post….firstly I think I’ve messaged you all personally by now but again and again and again let me say I’m really grateful to have you here and I’m excited to see what this place becomes. it was nice to hear your thoughts on the chapter I posted. wonderful, too, that this relationship we have has already pushed me to crystallize the thought-vapor I’ve been blowing around in my mind over the summer so, so lazily, as if keeping a feather afloat by the gentle force my honk-shoos and mi mi mi mis.

I worry I’ve been enjoying this Go Fish of thought more than I’ve been working to dissect and package the things I'm concerned with – which isn’t something, like, bad or unchangeable, but it's not a state I want to let myself relax into, and is also an indicator I’ve been enjoying too many delicious gummies.

for the good of our relationship I thought that you ought to know what I’ve been ruminating on for the past few months! here's a brief treatise

baby don't hurt methe video I’ve got on deck is about romantic love. this is the main train I’ve been riding. I'd rather show you these thoughts in their final realized form via video, but the gist of the script is that our attitude towards relationships and 'love' at the moment is so combative, so analytical, concerned with winners and losers and quantifiably equal amounts of give and take, so incensed by even the idea of being treated like therapists or mothers or banks – what is this? what are we talking about?

more than anything curiosity, I think, is the absolute soul of a relationship, the commitment to learning about another person’s internal world, to observation, to knowing – and curiosity simply can’t coexist alongside this petty aggression. and no, you’re not their therapist, but shouldn’t you be, though, a little? and their teacher, and their carer? – and then sometimes you are their patient, and their student – an always-changing (and untallied) uncompetitive exchange of power, with the ultimate aim to support one another in recreating the euphoria of childhood. this is what I think love is! knowledge and observation. frankly I think relationships that aren’t built on this proposition (besides the ones that play out under the watchful eye of a culturally sticky force like duty, or social responsibility, or religion – all valid motivators which are clearly very good at keeping people together, but they're not forces I’m personally interested in or indeed what I think most people are talking about today when they talk about love) are doomed.

language isn’t thought and thought isn’t language and it’s making me really tiredwhen people say I've articulated something they’d always thought but couldn’t come up with the words for, I'm like, oh, that's why I'm doing this. this to me is a totally noble and worthwhile pursuit and I could happily write forever based on that motivation alone. but my god have I found myself similarly penniless at the toll booth of that road!

I've been thinking a lot about the concessions that need to be made to even engage with language, what meaning or synaesthetic flair gets lost or left behind on a thought’s journey from the mind, and – most importantly, to me – how this affects the ability of others to understand us. it makes me sad. annoyingly it’s a bit of a dead end thought – what the hell am I gonna do about it? I can't change the flimsiness of fucking words – even if we conquer every pain or sensitivity that makes us defensive or unclear with our language, we still have to grapple with its incompleteness, its inability to touch the murky grey stuff our mind is actually made of, something else that we're not even close to understanding. boo! man is not even master of his own house.

but more and more it’s important to me to say exactly what I mean, with an intention to cut to the truth but also to avoid misconstrual (it's a good reflex I think but is also no doubt a symptom of the place we’re at regarding the state of communication online, where we cripple ourselves with uncertainty in an effort to please even the worst faith or most illiterate of reply guys). this intentionality seems to me a good thing to strive for in all things.

richard sikenlord please protect richard siken on his internet journey, this lauded poet, this deeply intelligent man, who is stumbling through the online social realm like a fat-kneed baby, he is replying to every tweet….every indirect….i love him….

pendulum ridingI literally don't know anything. when I feel I do know something, I'm immediately skeptical. I envy so much the ability of some others to believe completely in truths that are not truths. ultimately the ideological pendulum swings on and we all smash against it like bugs on a windshield! in-vogue physical traits and sexual politics, our attitudes towards organized religion, societal power and bad governments...I guess I’m wondering if there’s a way to remove yourself from this interminable ebb and flow entirely, or transcend it and go somewhere else. to write within its borders feels pointless, towards nothing – and I’m frightened of dedicating my life to an idea and then arriving at the end of my life and discovering it didn’t matter, or that the whole time I was slightly to the side of what mattered all along.

but I kind of know something about peoplewe all create our worldviews and make our decisions by referencing information that lives in the same dataset...it includes the horrors of our childhoods, the results of socialization, our deep deep fears and insecurities, all things that form completely outside of our control…to find the best truth about the world we would have to strip away all of these things from all of us and see what’s left…

the end of septemberthe cool morning air :) the wind in the trees :)

tbh rn i rlly need the video you’re gonna put out. i’m reading all about love by bell hooks and also going thru a big shift in my romantic relationship and it’s fucking tough navigating love, even without the shitty view of love that most of the world has at the moment. like genuine true love just doesn’t seem conceivable at the moment. we’re all encouraged to push our own agendas and fuck everything else but there’s no space for love in that narrative

millie

happy bday!

babbin

i don't know, is the truth about us that what lies underneath all those layers of socialization and traumas and learned patterns, all those things that can be dealt with but never fully go away because they made you, or is all that together what forms us and what makes us, us, and what is ultimately the truth about us? i truly don't know, but it's what i wonder about sometimes

lake

i am so excited for the video!! and thank YOU for creating this space!

respect to our lord and saviour richard siken 🫡

Have you read elif bautman's the idiot? It has some really interesting takes on the complexities of language and communication specifically through the lens of translation and verb tenses across languages!! It might not help the thought or heal the wound of miscommunication but by god is it interesting

savannah brown

yes!! made me frustrated that i only speak one lol. + read the language instinct recently too..would like to talk about them in a lil video on here maybe

analogue

thank you, that was a great read as always. these ideas/thoughts resonate with me and i share similar ones, specially the first point about romantic love. can't wait for the new video!

I was having the same thoughts as pendulum riding yesterday! I have no idea how to live my life when the beliefs and thoughts that inspire others to live seem fragile and inconsistent to me.

Hugo

I've felt for a while that the opinions I've reached are just the points at which I've stopped looking, for now. I'm now further unsettled by the idea of movement beneath the surface, thanks.

felt the richard siken part in my SOUL oh my god

I've been stuck on pondering the idea of romantic love, what people mean by it, and what it means for me, for some time now. Your video will be quite the contributor to this train of thought for me. I'm smelling the approach of a personal favorite in the sav videos list.

re richard siken: oh my god, when he came online I had the same thoughts. I adore this man and the internet is such a cruel place. I can’t imagine how jarring it must be to enter Twitter for the first time in the stage it’s currently at after everything he’s been through. protect richard! (Also been very much enjoying his new poetry in the publications he’s had thus far!)

echo

i’m going to read all of this with the attention it deserves now but god i fucking love richard siken. i didn’t know he was on the platform formerly known as twitter and now i can’t wait to read literally every single tweet he’s made

Just enjoying myself reading the outcome product of crystallized thought-vapor, delicious gummies and cool September air!

So by creating rules disguised as healthy boundaries I only further made myself into the parental figure I was trying to avoid becoming…embarrassing! very interested in this video

Absolutely agree with love and language. First, it makes me sad that people are fighting within love, while having social media just to aggravate the agression. And second, let's hope someone comes up with language 2.0™, so that it is actually possible to convey what one is. Look how I butchered the last sentence... God dammit language

Kev

Mmmh you use words good make my brain go brrrrr. Reading you explain your thoughts makes me feel good, safe, about mines, and makes me discover the english language in a more poetic way than what the usual internet lets me. Also, please package and sell that crystallized thought vapor as merch for us poor patreons. Cheers.

I think there is such an interesting return to sincerity in the usage "recreating the euphoria of childhood", in the earnest attempt to form a relationship that sparks such innocent and direct feelings towards one another. When I think of knowing each other (and it's relationship to love), I think love has a strange capacity to, in the fullest sense, identify a knowing that is perhaps something we are incapable of finding in isolation. Specifically, it is through the eyes of others that more subtle, idiosyncratic, and altogether automatic things can be witnessed (i.e. the way a person may touch their arm to calm themself, the way one may shift their head in a moment of terror). A lot of existential terror is in being known, but I think there is a fascinating dance between the eyes of love (and what they see) mixing and moving around what we are (and more specifically our own internal world). It is when people see things that we cannot put into words and when we put into words what cannot be seen.

language isn’t thought and thought isn’t language You’re touching on a lot of philosophical ideas in this short section. The first of which is that there exist properties of thought/ideas that are not reducible to language, at least not yet. These ideas are frequently refereed to as ineffable qualities within philosophy. A similar point can be made regarding your point that thought isn’t language, more so pointing to the fact that the emergent phenomena within our mind, isn’t automatically processed via language, there exist many multiple means of attempting to describe one’s internal state as is evident in various art forms. Finally your quote closely resembles an Einstein quote “as far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality”. Now what does this have to do with your quote, a lot. Math is a language the most precise of them all, but mathematics isn’t reality(thoughts and ideas), and reality(thoughts) aren’t math. I hope this made even a bit of sense to somebody I really liked what you wrote. Also on the topic of stripping away everything that makes us who we are in hopes of seeing what’s left, I recommend looking into mereological nihilism.
