we kept the part where we thought youtube was broken (twice) and turned out it was just how they ended episodes AND they probably had to copyright block a needle drop song, so you can see how surprised we were, enjoy!

To the ADR question: my understanding is that pretty much all mainland Chinese dramas are dubbed, and I think the primary reason is actually the standardization of Mandarin. In this show, like many others, there are different voice actors for the main characters who have very "accurate" Mandarin. Both Xubin and Zang Jiongmin were born in southern China, and in general northerners have accents closer to the official Mandarin (but with young people the difference is much smaller). (Also if someone has a different understanding of this please let me know)

There are actually instances when the actors record their own lines later. Besides the issue of different dialects and such, from what I heard, it also just makes shooting 'easier'. The director can direct them while they are filming, yell out 'cue' and stuff like that. It's really interesting that this is the way their industry works!

also, chinese shows go through many rounds of censorship and often have to adjust dialogue alot, it is much easier to redub scenes (and much cheaper) than reshoot

1:11:45 Actually 儿子 ( érzi ) does mean son. You're probably thinking of 二 ( èr ), which means 2. They are very similar, just different accents :) (Take this with a grain of salt, I'm not a Chinese speaker but my mom taught English in Taiwan so I'm familiar with a few words, plus I've watched a lot of Chinese/Taiwanese dramas lol)

Very that. They clearly wanted to avoid the same repercussions that happened to Addicted (based on the same source material), but they got bolder as the show goes on. If an out (as it were) BL is “2”, Stay With Me is “1+1”

In regards to Viki blocking screen recording, disable hardware acceleration in your browser and it should stop the blocking. If you're using chrome go to settings, then system, then turn off the slider for "use graphics acceleration when available"

My real question is: are school registrations a lot less formal in China than here in the states? Cus I remember my mom needing all sorts of documents, proof of address, and a parent or legal gaurdian with valid ID had to be the one to do the registration and sign all the forms in person. They would also have to be the ones to pull you out of your old school, otherwise if you just stopped showing up the authorities are gonna get involved pretty quickly. But it seems Wu Bi just had his aunt pull him out and get him registered at a new school, which absolutely wouldn't fly here.

Maybe his aunt has some connections in the education system? Idk that's the only explanation I can think of, but yeah realistically I think the old school would be contacting the parents trying to figure out why he wanted to transfer out, especially because he's a smart kid from a wealthy family.

ohh, I have not seen this show yet so I'm looking forward to see it together. And yes, Almost all Chinese shows end abruptly which is something that makes me laugh. There will be no cliffhanger or any suspense, just a cut in the middle of a conversation(not always tho).

Omg I'm so excited for this it seems pretty cute and domestic and I Love Love Love a found family trope thing they've got going on with the little girl. Adam, I feel you on the Vincenzo love. I do love an archetype, I love a trope. I really feel like Vincenzo could be an insane action comedy IP if they kept fueling it. There was a Vincenzo appearance in Queen of Tears that my mom and I freaked out about so maybe it Could be a thing we could see in the future.

If you are getting into Chinese dramas, I HIGHLY recommend "The Untamed". IMO It is one of the best dramas (BL or otherwise) that I have watched. The costumes, casting, acting, set, and atmosphere as a whole was immaculate.

I get him taking off and going to live on his own, rich kids have a level of independence that's baffling to me so they can kind of get away w/ anything in stories lol. But the school thing, there's usually a level of beaurocracy involved that I can't suspend my disbelief for bc I'm officially the most boring stick in the mud lol.

i've only ever watched one other C-drama, literally last week, and it also had a safety PSA! In this one a woman met a man in a bar and they clicked so he wanted to drive her home. She demanded 2 forms of identification from him, checked both to see if the names matched, established he was known by a mutual friend, then took a photo of his license plate and texted it to her cousin before she got in the car. Amazing

Yes! it was my first C-drama and I really enjoyed the mellow pace and the absence of villainry and serial killers. lol. I did get bored toward the end and skipped over a lot of the snooker, but I was genuinely enchanted for 3/4s of it

The tension is tensioning. The tropes are trope-ing. Enemies to lovers is my favorite thing ever and the fact they’re going to make this patchwork family eventually is going to kill me. I agree with Adam about the gentleness. There’s a sweetness among the goofiness and melodrama. I think it’s so far well balanced! I'm going to try to watch it with the patreon, but I might break haha

The reason Chinese dramas use ADR is because they are required to use standard mandarin however lots of actors have regional accents. They also use ADR because unclear dialogue, this happens quite often due to sound pollution.
