I honestly think People were being mean because, in my opinion, a lot of the people that have reacted to the Show treated the Guys on it like Characters in BL, said horrible things about them and in one case even send so much hate to one that it made me genuinely anxious and nauseous. It made a lot of people that relate to some of the Guys feel personally attacked because, me included, felt like the people said I don't deserve someone that loves me. That turned the Fandom pretty toxic (on both sides!) for a while. I have to say, I even had to stop watching any content of a reactor that I even was on patron because what he said genuinely triggered me every week. That's not an excuse to be an asshole towards others though. Everything just went off the rails for like two months while it was airing and after because people on all aisles felt personally attacked by things the other side was saying.

This show is so interesting, the editing choices are so fascinating and it's so so gay. I just don't understand how it managed to cultivate such an intensely rabid audience😭😭😂😂 then again if you've ever watched other dating reality shows everybody usually also turns into licensed psychologist so I guess this is just the nature of a spectating audience...

100%!! It was the objectification of the contestants. They found His Man "boring", because they wanted a bunch of sexy guys with no baggage or drama doing fanservice. And didn't consider either of the casts as actual people with their own lives. It's the same mindset that made people send hate to Hamnin after the break up at the end of the show. It's not a prewritten story with actors for your satisfaction. It's REAL people. Some just don't get it.

Shun wrote to Gensei. I didn’t catch it during my first watch (was watching it at around 2am) and none of the reactors I watched noticed it either. The editing makes it seem like he wrote to none, which is something quite a lot of people still believe.

i also wish they had indicated what day it is because it's really hard to gage how much time had passed! especially since they're leaving so much out, like showing people grow closer, it makes some decisions the cast makes or their talking heads confusing at times :( anyways, i'm really excited to rewatch this with you!

oh absolutely agree, the same ppl who do this are the ones who also get crazy mad at bl that portrays more 'realistic' queer stories. they only see gay men as a portrayal of an idealised fantasy they made up, and will very often never actually have knowledge or respect for other queer people too

People online were being really mean about comparing The Boyfriend to His Man, & comparing them both to Sparks Camp. And treating the contestants on all 3 like they weren’t real people with real feelings. I’ll just say, I’m a truther for all 3 shows cause I like seeing people fall in love. Like, everybody deffo needed a chill pill when this was airing. 😭😭

My only struggle with this show is the editing showed us so little despite how long they were there, i felt i didn't get to know the cast or see their relationships develop which left me pretty uninvested. You would get flashes of friendships or interest but they would feel sudden and out of the blue- i just felt frustrated i wasn't getting to see more! I can watch you guys watch anything though so excited to see what you think!

I never understood all the hate Shun and Dai got when this was airing … like I genuinely thought to myself these people need to camp in the forest and touch some trees and photosynthesise cuz they were loosing their minds calling Shun a walking red flag and Dai a “loose canon” like Jesus Christ these people were INSANE

Ppl on twt seem to forget that these are real complex ppl and not characters! Shun is complicated and has a lot of insecurities which lead him to making some interesting choices but he's human and it makes sense why he behaves the way he does. He doesn't act with bad intentions and ppl online acting like he killed their mother bc of some of the things he does in this show is actually insane

I actually don't mind the editing, yes they leave a lot out which can be confusing but it helps remind me that we are just outsiders looking in, we don't really know these people and it feels more natural in a way. I saw all the online hubbub about this show so I do get the general gist of what people were mad about but I know literally zero of the details. All I can say is that I'm already obsessed from these first two episodes. From what I can see although the show is heavily edited they're doing a pretty good job of giving the cast the ability to explain why they feel the way they feel. I can never imagine myself getting invested enough into other grown adults business to be mad unless someone was truly being vindictive but it sounds like we're going to be looking at normal people in their twenties/thirties trying to navigate emotions which is bound to be a little bit messy but I don't think anyone here is a bad person.

I remember my heart dropping into my stomach when Shun explained how he'd had 3 relationships, his first was when he was 18 and it was someone significantly older - granted 10-12 years isn't too bad a gap objectively (my parents are 11 years apart) - but when he said how he'd been mistreated by them and such, y'all ... his behaviours started making sense; and his overall story (not yet fully gone into in the series) really broke my heart.

The editing, especially compared to korean dating shows, is so fast paced and choppy it feels like I am watching a trailer for a show or a 'next ep preview' instead of an actual show.

Shun is definitely nonstandard participant of dating show, but this only makes it more interesting) It seems to me that viewers was divided into two camps: those who can relate to Shun's character and traumas, and those who don't understand him at all. P.S. when I first saw Dai I was also shocked that he is so young. He looks 30 to me, but then I got his true youth energy (he horny as fuck for Shun, it killed me 😅)

At some point while watching this show for the first time I had the thought "This is edited more like a BL than a dating show..." and watching it back has only reaffirmed it. 10 episodes, 45 minutes or less each, and yet they were there for 40 days....... they must have had SO much footage to go through and decide what to show/not.

I came straight to the comments before watching this. Some people are just unhinged in the fandom when discussing this show (not on here). There are questionable behaviours by a certain person, however, the editing and marketing of this show leaned into this (as mentioned earlier) and the toxic side of the fandom clearly don’t have an ounce of critical thinking because they just went for the jugular and didn’t question anything. Pretty much “well if it’s on facebook it must be true” kinda attitude! Anyway - i really enjoyed this show, especially because it challenges the societal and cultural norms in Japan.
