The issue I tend to have with survival shows is the public voting as it always ends up being who has more fans and voting gets toxic with people voting against groups that are a threat. I wish kingdom was just a mix of the expert and group votes but these shows feed off the voting drama!

not really an answer to how big the south korean theatre industry is there seems to be a pretty large crossover with idol, film and theatre and there are multiple productions i’d love to find subtitled bootleg for also a movie you may be interested in (not to say oh you should react to this just you might find it interesting) called Method from 2017 about a acclaimed theatre actor known for method acting taking a idol making his stage debut under his wing and the complicated relationship that forms between them during the course of preproduction of their play not really a bl but i see people list it under bl movies a lot

During the time the issue was people thought any performance that didnt have explosions was boring. It was a whole mess. This season was also very unfair when it came to budgeting. You will see later on in the show how even the idols started getting fed up .. especially iKon! The viewers and voters made sure to let everyone know that if your performance isnt more grand than the NFL superbowl halftime show it isnt getting the votes. And in my opinion Ateez should have won the entire show. They showed the most growth and their performances were the most unique of all the groups. But its all in the past now and its all just legendary performances by our favs!.

o sole mio is definitely my favorite tbz performance across both shows (with reveal from rtk closely behind). its sad that sangyeon wasnt able to light the fire, but it’s still an impeccable performance. if we never knew, it wouldnt have made a difference. i understand where you guys are coming from about deobi’s opinions on this show. i lowkey hate it too. every performance tbz puts on is great. although their results on this show could be disappointing for tbz and our fandom alike, it doesnt take away from how great they are. shoutout to the man behind the scenes, yujin’s father baek kooyoung, for bringing these performances to life in both shows!

Regarding Yunho's controversy, it was actually because he was found breaking Covid restrictions. Apparently establishments were only allowed to be open until 10pm and he was out with his friends past midnight at a restaurant (allegedly also an illegal adult entertainment bar) and basically netizens were upset that celebrities werent following the covid rules when everyone else was trying to kinda like when all the American celebrities were chartering private jets to the Caribbean for vacations during lock down.

One of the best things about this round of the show is watching the younger groups be so shocked and honored to see groups that inspired them to become idols do their songs. It's the kind of wholesome sentimentality I wanna see more of in survival shows.

I think like many groups that have gone through the Kingdom series, SF9 really found themselves through this and it shows in their music. Their music pre Kingdom is good, but Post Kingdom has just been so perfectly for them. They moved into that grown and sexy so seamlessly.

iKON is just so cool. They are the coolest guys. This performance and the slowed down version of Inception reminded me of Baggy Jeans in the way, it seems effortless. Like we don't care how cool we are, but we are cool. They had my favorite choreography of the night.

Yeah. The scoring on any of the MNET reality shows is crazy rigged, but it is actually laughable with Kingdom. The way scores and views tallied in, if you don’t have the biggest fan base, you can’t recoup those points. You have no chance. Which is why people voted for their favorite and then ones with small fan bases or ones who they knew wouldn’t get top 3 in the performances. When I say it was actually painful to watch the scoring on the show as it happened, I mean it was US election results night painful. Because it felt like voting really did nothing. And this is also the reason why a Kingdom/Queendom show would never work. Unless it was mandatory that both males and females win, the women would be out first. Boy groups have larger fandoms on average, and the performances that the guy groups are expected to put on are more physically demanding as opposed to trying to make the performances look beautiful. I feel like the guy group performances would have a bigger…spectacle? I’m not trying to say the males and females aren’t equally talented, but the way the kpop genre is laid out (and how Asian society gender norms are perpetuated particularly in what is expected on stage), males and females are trained differently, and the fans are predominantly female. So making a show with both males and females fair would be impossible, when they can’t even attempt it for one gender. What I’m trying to say is the men would be expected to put on these big, theatric and daring performances like we see here on Kingdom, but the women would need to keep up with them all while maintaining a level of grace and beauty and standards the men won’t have.

Sorry for the essay, rip I don't think a single thing would have stopped Ateez from choosing iKon tbh. You'll see more about their reasoning in the next ep. I think they were really smart about the placement, putting them and iKon 3rd and 4th with the split eps means that they and their music both get to feature heavily across both weeks. I really love that we get to see the growth of groups like SF9 across the show when they not only seem to surpass their own expectations but also come to understand themselves better. Even The Boyz realising that competing with their past selves is impossible seems to set them on their path. It also feels like iKon were kind of resigned after losing B.I and it feels like the show helps them cement their view of themselves as this unit. The show has downsides (mostly relating to Mnet) but you do see some groups that were in limbo. The voting system as you said... leaves a lot to be desired. And unfortunately it doesn't get better. You can see it from fans but also groups who keep track of scores as eps go on. There are a couple of results that... yeah. Honestly it's part of the show you just have to ignore. I will also echo what you said about TBZ being impressive throughout the show and just note that their version of O Sole Mio is on spotify (and also high rotation in my house). Unfortunately not all songs from the show are, I assume because of royalties or company permissions.

one thing about multis in kpop, that for international fans it was the NORM until 4th gen. this has a lot to do with 1) the dominance of bts, and 2) increased siloed/self produced content strategies (compared to earlier gens where idols of various group frequently mixed together on tv shows and collab performances)

Stray Kids are one of my ults, but I totally agree with what Adam said about how winning doesn't mean you are the best group out there. The whole reason I watched Kingdom since the lineup was announced was because I've been a kpop fan since 2013 and saw all these groups debut and was heavily invested in them at some point; I just wanted to see them have a great time with each other and do well which is why even though I watched the show since it aired I never voted.

I’m with Adam on just wanting to watch idols having fun together. Like I’d watch a show where they just hang out or play games together. And yes I know that’s basically just game caterers but I'd love it if it was idols from different companies.

Was looking forward to The Stealer and all the body tea that SF9 brought to the stage cuz truly I don't think we'll ever see something like this in kpop ever again. Very excited for next week's reaction to I'll Be Your Man; that's the other performance that I rewatch every so often. I remember there being a 3-pick voting system either the whole show or just not for the finale. During the show, I'd say most fandoms would vote their one-pick and then cycle the other 2 picks either equally or based on performance. Based on voting power it was clear SKZ would win from the get-go but I remember right before the finale there was an additional effort from STAY to switch their voting strategy to widen the gap. Kingdom definitely propelled SKZ into the gp's favour, but I wouldn't expect that most STAY look back on Kingdom fondly. memories of feeling pressured to vote/stream and at least for me there was a kpop burnout that followed. I do think Kingdom would have been the tipping point where the modern SKZ fandom took form + the very vocal fans obsessed with numbers got louder.

Yeah at the time the voting was... interesting especially being a fan of the groups being used by the others in their voting wars. I guess as a voter my mentality was different. Of course I wanted my faves to do well... but I had already watched Q1 and RTK at that point so already knew the group with the biggest fandom would win which was definitely not SF9. So as a Fantasy I just wanted the guys to get this experience and catch some new fans. I wasn't into TBZ till after Kingdom but both their original Stealer and SF9's version are mainstays in my playlist. Rowoon's intro always gets me.

And Mamma Mia by Sf9 while you're at it to see them being cute / goofy!! The fire mishap with Sangyeon in particular always leaves me a little frustrated considering the continual narrative of tbz understandably being perfectionists and getting hung up on their mistakes. Even their best stages contain mishaps just from the sheer amount of elements going on. I just remember them practicing with the fire for what felt like a MILLION TIMES in their behind video for this stage. Which sucks since iirc it was a bit faulty in the earlier stages of practice but I guess it was a risk they were taking. I hope they can enjoy their stages more in retrospect as they are great regardless of expectations as you guys said. I absolutely love the rearrangement and choreo they did for O Sole Mio!

IKON’s version of Inception was SO GOOD! They made the song entirely their own! And like there’s something about Bobby on stage when he’s performing you can like literally feel the joy he’s feeling on stage and how relaxed he is. Amazing! Can’t believe his baby is almost 4 months old now as well. Hope him and his family is doing well 🥹❤️🫶🏼

I used to think of myself a multi. being a staytiny in this time was not fun. tbh, kingom made me lose a lot of interest in Stray Kids (they were the first group I stanned) because the fandom was so damn toxic. me voting for both Stray Kids and ATEEZ was like some sin to so many stays. and I hate how the fandom has influenced my interest in the group, since it's (kind of) out of the control of the group. but just with voting through this whole show, it was so rigged. there were a group of stays that harassed people to vote for Stray Kids and then choose 2 groups that just weren't good, so the competition wouldn't get those votes. so yeah, being a multi is rare, because some fans in some fandoms just ruin it for others

A big reason why I dislike Kingdom is that I feel like the whole concept is just so disrespectful to all the groups that participated in rtk. The boyz “qualified” for legendary war but the other groups? Why were they chosen? Bc they are more talented? Certainly No. All groups in rtk did amazing (especially ONF imo), even TOO/TO1 who were rookies at the time. I don’t understand why this is the “legendary war”. It’s more like a legendary fan war.
