I'm from an Asian country, we had brief introductions like this at the start of a new school year because usually you have new people coming in or also people might have gotten shuffled around different classrooms a little sometimes after you move up a grade. We do stay in the one classroom all the time, so you interact the most with a fixed set of students, but also you get to interact with everyone else in your grade generally anyway at school events, lunch and stuff so you end up getting to HAVE to know everyone whether you want to or not lol

Japanese can be written vertically (in which case it’s read right to left) OR horizontally (in which case it’s read left to right). As I understand it, the horizontal writing was western influence. So novels, scripts, manga, traditional art/writing will have vertical script. But a lot of modern maps, signs, websites, social media has horizontal script.

When I first watched this show I wasn’t super into BL yet and I didn’t love the show until this last episode when you get to see Kiyoi be emotional. The parts where he was trying to convey how he wanted Hira to see him as a human- that’s what made me reconsider and realize this show is amazing. To be clear, not only the last episode was great, I just wasn’t able to see it when I wasn’t familiar with BL or Japanese shows yet

I remember watching this around the time it came out and hating it, so I'm really glad to have had the opportunity to rewatch it with everyone here and come away with a totally different feeling on the show and the main characters' dynamic. I guess me from a few years ago just wasn't ready for the peak freak4freak dynamic.... can't wait to see where they go from here in terms of them being in an actual relationship with each other because neither of these two are exactly great at communicating rn...

like everyone else, i love the scene where kiyoi finally reveals all of his frustrations to hira and practically begs hira to see him as just a man, not some thing to put on a pedestal. also love how ep 5 shows that kiyoi is so aware of hira's feelings from the beginning and then becomes more and more upset bc hira won't do a damn thing about it. i think it's esp disappointing for kiyoi bc he viewed hira as someone who really saw him, not this "god" other people made him out to be. and to think hira might prefer this mythologized version of kiyoi instead of himself is truly devastating. excited to see what you guys think of season 2!

I love My Beautiful Man because it's a BL that only Japan could make. It's such a good deconstruction of putting someone on a pedestal, and I love how the second part of the series completely changes the view of the characters.

To expand on that a little, top to bottom, right to left is the traditional way, adopted from Chinese, so products being printed like that are novels, manga, newspapers for example. For magazines it can go either way depending on the page layout, I have idol magazines where one double page spread is top to bottom and then the next spread is left to right. And then stuff online or text on screen (like subtitles on variety shows and such) is mostly left to right. Afaik it's the same for Chinese nowadays. The script is versatile in that way so it can be adapted to the needs of the medium. It never felt like a problem when I was learning the language though, you can usually tell from the spaces in between the kanji which way the lines are oriented.

One of my favourite things about this show is how "creepy" is used.. the actual japanese word キモい (kimoi) kind of means gross/disgusting/disturbing all rolled into one so I think creepy is a good translation in this context. Surface level it is read as Kiyoi calling Hira creepy (which morphs into a playful affectionate jab when they get together) but I've always interpreted another layer of Kiyoi calling HIMSELF creepy because of the way his heart reacts to whenever Hira says something fucking crazy. Like Hira says "I'd let you kill me" and kiyoi says "creepy" but theres no subject there.. its like hes thinking "you're creepy for saying it and I'm just creepy for liking it as much as I do" !!! I love double meanings

originally this series was 10 episodes but them people running the time slots for television was like "but this is a BL" so it got cut down to 6 episodes.... the teaser at the end of episode 3 for episode 4 wasn't a made up random scene; it was actually one of the many scenes they cut out to edit down to 6 episodes. so they had to take a mini series adapting a novel and cut it down after production, like filming was already done, it was already airing too, i think it happened after episode 1 like right after before episode 2 was released; but that editing team made it happen. i think the series took like 1 week off regular schedule to edit the rest down to 6. but what they didn't expect was for the series to become so popular to get a 2nd season and a movie.

But they were both into it, sooo 😏😏😏 The scene at school when Kiyoi finally said, “I’m not a king. I’m just an ordinary guy. I want to be with the person I love” really hit me. I felt his despair and loneliness. And then “I’m not a god” completely destroyed me 😭😭😭 1:00:03 – I was truly shocked when I realized at that moment that Hira is the top, not Kiyoi.
But when Kiyoi showed us his baby girl side — the one he’d been hiding from both us and Hira — it suddenly made total sense!

What a fantastic season finale! I am blown away by this show and NEED that second season/movie. It's such an incredibly complicated relationship between someone who just wants to be perceived as a person and loved for who he is versus the guy that fell in love with him, who also thinks he's a God. The tension was immaculate all episode. I was gasping right along with you.

AND ANOTHER THING I am obsessed with the fact we started the series with Hira stating he couldn't tell anyone what he liked. To him, he was unable to say he likes things and in the end, it was his confession to Kiyoi that resolved the conflict. This whole show boiled down to being able to confidently admit what you love and have communication. And! It was a problem for Kiyoi too! I think it was a GREAT character arc for both characters. I'm chomping at the bit for the next season.

Same in India..also lot of us stayed in the same class and didn't really change to another section with new groups of people, we knew each other already so no introductions were done. Even if we changed to another class, we often had friends from those sections and we either introduced ourselves informally without the teacher present or we knew through roll call and with time got to know each other. Thank god we never had formal introductions. Hate those.
