Ziyu's "let me arch my back for you to spank it better" changed lives. Speaking of Ziyu, idk if you guys were aware of the lore surrounding him but he's been through a whole lot before this show. I'm sure someone here is much more knowledgeable about it than me, but he was actually a part of a group but was being abused by his company (and maybe one of his group mates? Not 100% sure), so seeing him be so bright and bubbly in the BTS is so nice. Also following his blowup a bunch of people tried to make up dating rumors about him and his manager that he didn't really speak up about, because it turns out his manager is actually a lesbian (she revealed it herself) but he didn't want to out her.

Yeah there were a couple of points where people were super nervous about it getting taken off air halfway through similarly to the author/director's(?) last show but luckily the loophole somewhat worked out even in spite of how huge the show ended up getting in China

👆 This is true for all the uncensored Chinese BLs that are being released recently. The creators were tired of having to please the censors so now they're avoiding censors entirely via international investors and dropping the shows on international platforms only. All the hype the shows are getting within the country they're getting entirely from people who watch it through VPN and such.

In the behind the scenes where Ziyu (Wu Suo Wei) was asking “why he’s the one always being pinned down” and Tian Xu Ning (Chi Cheng) responded “because you’re the..” he actually makes a 0 (zero) with his fingers which means bottom. In China I guess it’s used in gay slang, 1 represents top and 0 represents bottom.

Yes the snakes are a plot device and it wraps up around episode 10 I think. Like I mentioned in the first reaction,the snake only makes cameos in the second half. They needed the budget for other things…. 🫣 The only thing you need to know about the snakes is that Chi Cheng loves them. Because that part is important.

I'm a veterinarian who typically sees just dogs and cats but I once interviewed at a place that also saw exotics and the first appointment of the day was removing eye caps from a snake and then checking its gender which was definitely a new experience.

The snakes are a lot! And technically, yes, haha, we should care. These snakes are CC’s beloved pets. He cares more about these snakes than his family, friends, and everyone else. So, when his father took them, CC is put under duress and is now being forced to do things he doesn’t want to do, which is making his life worse. And now, WSW cares bc his feelings for CC are growing :) We could also think of the snakes as an allegory to CC’s queerness. Being a snake owner is seen as something strange by everyone, despite how much CC loves it and his snakes/other men. He’s literally called flamboyant, I think, in the first episode by his dad bc of his choices. Lol. The snakes being taken is CC’s father forcing heteronormativity onto him, pushing a girlfriend and a corporate job. In these episodes, CC has to deny getting more serious with WSW bc he can’t give up his girlfriend or risk the health of his pets. That’s my take! Haha. It's a lot for such a wacky show, but I'm so invested lol

can confirm, as a chinese person, who also lives in and works around predominantly chinese communities, a lot of people are in fact sending voice memos over wechat lmao like doesn't matter where they are, out in public or not, they are sending voice memos lol sometimes just having full conversations in real time through voice memos instead of calling or texting LOL

the existence of the snakes is important for the plot but the details aren't that important. To keep track you just need to remember who has the snakes, why/how CC's got the snakes and their importance (or not) to him at various stages in the plotline .... lol

I will be fully honest, as a native Chinese speaker, some of these lines are just ... too unhinged .. just saying we don't all talk like that lol and yes, people do voice messages in China a lot. There is a AI function in Wechat that can translate voice messages into text as well ... so I tend to just use it when people send me voice messages since personally I prefer text more, but I feel like it is more popular in younger generation and for older people that are slow in texting

Both henchmen are also gay(/bi? whatever) and routinely get their boss’s sloppy thirds. In the gay “bar” scene, CC’s henchman was actively making a move on the dude he was draped over. The book is long as hell with a lot detail, so they 100% use shorthand like the phallic foods to bridge the gap.

I feel this! I loved the beginning coz it was just so hilarious, but maybe its because of how lighthearted and understated everything is that the real care comes through later as their relationship deepens. I think its such a real depiction of how chinese relationships are. Like Thai/Korean/Japanese BL all have their own thing, but man, this hit so hard because it felt very real. Chinese people don't really say what matters, but its all implied, and deeply felt. and gahhh, I've never loved a depiction of a couple as much as I love CC/WSW

You don't really need to worry about the details about the snake plot. I never fully figured it out and still had a great time with the show. The snake plot doesn't last the whole series anyway.

The snakes are a plot device, and the majority have no meaning to the plot whatsoever, however there are two snakes to know: Hua Long (the big yellow one) and Little Jealous One. The over arching snakes-getting-kidnapped plot isn’t super important, it’s more the snakes being important to Chi Cheng and how he is so emotionally dependent on them, like a crutch. Hua Long and Little Jealous One will be important plot devices later on though, in the relationship between Chi Cheng and Suowei. Their relationship is the main plot.

Its funny because most of the bTS clips you're seeing along with the show are super tame compared to all that's out there. Once you're done watching the series you need to do a deep dive. Those two are wild. And wait until you see how much the actor playing ChengYu fanboys over the actor playing Wu Souwei. He's been a fan since Ziyu was in the idol group and it shows.

yes voice messages are very common in China. we use the app called WeChat, and the voice message is very convenient, a built-in function, and we can long-click then translate (mostly correctly) the voice message into text.
