Philosopher’s stone~Eyes Wide Shut (Insight) (Patreon)

This morning, while watching the scene again after I received some sublime feedback, I realized that the music playing in the background sounded familiar. I eventually discovered that it’s very similar to the music in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
My mind made a very strong connection to it, and I think that’s essentially what it’s about. In the feedback, he mentioned the word passion, and that unlocked a key inside me. That’s exactly what it is about: that uncontrollable desire, that drive that could turn us into animals—that life force. And to me, this feels like what would happen if we had the Philosopher’s Stone in front of us.
And perhaps that’s also why society tries to control this instinct through structures like marriage, among other things…

Alice describes a moment when she saw the naval officer and felt an overwhelming desire that could have destroyed her entire life. Kubrick here is exploring raw desire, the fragility of social structures, and the tension between instinct and civilization.
On the other hand, the Philosopher’s Stone is a mythical object that represents the ultimate life force, transformation, and the power that humans obsessively seek.
Symbolically, both ideas revolve around a force that transforms everything.
So it seems to me that, metaphorically speaking (not so methodically though, of course), the naval officer becomes a kind of “Philosopher’s Stone” for Alice—a catalyst that reveals a hidden truth about desire and human nature.
Not literal alchemy, but psychological alchemy.
Almost as if she discovered:
“Inside me there is a force stronger than my life, my marriage, my identity.”
