An approximately 2,000-year-old Gnostic poem discovered in 1945 near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, after lying hidden for centuries inside a sealed jar buried beneath the desert sands. Preserved in Coptic as ⲧⲉⲃⲣⲟⲛⲧⲏ: ⲛⲟⲩⲥ ⲛ̄ⲧⲉⲗⲉⲓⲟⲥ (The Thunder, Perfect Mind; NHC VI,2), it speaks in the voice of a divine being who unfolds herself through paradox: “I am the first and the last… I am war and peace… I am the hearing that is attainable to everyone and the speech that cannot be grasped.”
(George W. MacRae, trans., in The Nag Hammadi Library in English, ed. James M. Robinson, HarperSanFrancisco, 1990.)
