Max Frey (1874–1944) was a German painter, graphic artist, and illustrator renowned for his contributions to Symbolism and Magic Realism. Early in his career, he was heavily influenced by the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) movement, contributing precise, decorative illustrations to the famous magazine Jugend. His style later evolved into the crisp, highly detailed, and slightly unsettling aesthetics of New Objectivity and Magic Realism. Frey's paintings are characterized by meticulous execution, expressive use of color, and a deep fascination with dreamlike, bizarre, and allegorical imagery, seamlessly blending realistic details with mystical and otherworldly themes.
