The Betty and Barney Hill abduction is widely considered the first widely publicized alien abduction report in modern history. While the incident began late on the night of September 19, 1961 (and continued into the early morning of September 20), the most chilling details about their capture did not emerge immediately. They were uncovered years later through hypnosis. The Midnight Encounter The couple was driving home to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, after a vacation in Montreal and Niagara Falls. While traveling down Route 3 through the White Mountains, Betty noticed a bright, moving light in the sky that did not behave like a star or an airplane. As they drove closer to Cannon Mountain, Barney stopped the car and used binoculars to look at the object. He claimed to see a large, disc-shaped craft with windows. Through the glass, he saw several humanoid figures looking back at him. Terrified, Barney ran back to the car, and they sped away. Shortly after, they heard a series of strange buzzing and clicking sounds vibrating through the frame of their vehicle. The "Missing Time "When they arrived home, they noticed several strange anomalies: Their journey had taken two hours longer than it should have. They had no memory of what happened during those two hours. Betty's dress was torn, and Barney's shoes were scuffed. Both of their wristwatches had permanently stopped working Disturbed by anxiety and intense nightmares, the couple eventually sought the help of Boston psychiatrist and neurologist Dr. Benjamin Simon in 1964. Dr. Simon used regressive hypnosis in separate sessions so the couple could not influence each other's stories. Under hypnosis, both Betty and Barney recalled identical details of being forced to stop their car by gray-skinned humanoids, taken aboard a disc-shaped craft, and subjected to intrusive medical examinations. The Legacy of the Case During her experience, Betty claimed the leader of the entities showed her a 3D hologram of a star map. Years later, an amateur astronomer named Marjorie Fish used Betty's sketches to trace the map back to the Zeta Reticuli star system, which gave the entities the famous nickname "Zeta Reticulans." Dr. Simon concluded that the abduction story was a combination of Betty's vivid dreams and shared stress, rather than a physical reality. However, the media coverage of their experience completely transformed modern folklore. The Hills' description of short, gray beings with large black eyes, the concept of "missing time," and the medical exams became the blueprint for the classic "Grey Alien" archetype in pop culture and science fiction.
