Two marine biologists decided to spend the afternoon picking up the plastic litter from the nearby beach. They went in seperate directions and at some point Joe found a mer egg that had washed ashore and sat on it to take a break. It still containing some transformative energy, he quickly age regressed, and slipped in through the seam. Being in such an awkward position, he struggled in his attempts to get out. Which is how Susan found him. They both know how those things work and as long as he's not in salt water, no other transformation than his apparent age regression will occur. He'd have quickly grown up again if Susan had pulled him out, but where's the fun in that?
