Continuing from last time, here’s a little more about how I’m actually using AI in my manga production (as of now).
For the moment, the two areas where AI is genuinely helping me in my manga workflow are “naming (or rather scripting… or more accurately, typing)” and “Japanese-to-English translation.”
[ 1 How I use AI for “ネーム (name)” ( This is manga technical term for scripting) ]
When making manga, the first step is creating the ネーム (name). It’s basically like writing a stage play script, so traditionally I’d just use Word the same way anyone would. That meant…
p.01
#Convenience store warehouse
Shigeru and Takeshi are tidying up stock in the convenience store warehouse.
Shigeru: “Hey, hold on a sec!”
Shigeru calls out to Takeshi.
Takeshi: “What?”
Takeshi turns around.
…writing the scene setting, character names, dialogue, stage directions… typing, enter, typing, enter, over and over.
With AI, though, I can just lazily type something like:
“First page. Scene: convenience store warehouse. They’re tidying up. Shigeru says ‘Hey, hold on a sec!’ and calls out to Takeshi. Takeshi says ‘What?’ and turns around.”
…and the AI will neatly format it into proper script style for me. I can even add instructions like “break the dialogue lines so they’ll fit nicely in manga speech bubbles,” and it does a pretty decent job of splitting them in a natural way. Or if I say “extract just the dialogue,” it’ll spit out a clean .txt file with only the lines.
You might be thinking, “Wait, how is that actually helpful?” But surprisingly, it shaves off just enough time to make a real difference. At its extreme, I can dump my thoughts in a stream-of-consciousness mess, and the AI still organizes it into a clean script format.
That said… I’ve tried giving instructions like “point out inconsistencies in the scenario” or “flag inconsistencies in character speech patterns,” and while it’s not impossible, the accuracy isn’t high enough to fully trust yet. That’s been my honest experience so far… 💦
(Side note: character naming)
I also experimented with having AI come up with character names. When I asked for “names that feel like a guy in his 20s/40s,” it gave me some solid, “Oh, nice!” suggestions. But when I tried something more abstract like “give me ten masculine-sounding names,” every AI I tried just churned out the same predictable, cookie-cutter names with zero originality (LOL). I guess they’re all trapped by certain preconceptions? In the end, for names I still rely on random surname/first-name generator sites.
[ 2 Using AI for Japanese-to-English translation ]
Now, when it comes to translating manga from Japanese to English, this is where LLMs can be useful tools. But let me be perfectly clear: AI translation is NOT “the best thing ever.” For a non-native speaker like me, it’s more like an emergency first-aid kit that helps me deal with “I need something workable right now” situations. It doesn’t fully solve the problem, but I’m genuinely grateful for the assistance.
What I find most useful is being able to specify the tone of voice.
“Rough and blunt, like a craftsman.”
“Like a narrator in an old folktale.”
“Like a British butler.”
Being able to get different translations based on those kinds of instructions makes me really happy.
Of course, actual native English speakers would probably look at a lot of the results and go, “Uh… that’s not quite right” or “That feels kinda off to a native ear 💦.” But! For someone like me who’s far from native-level, this is pretty much the best I can manage and supervise on my own—and I want to believe the AI is doing its best for me!
Naturally, though, AI translations still have quite a few mistakes. And I mean a seriously non-joking amount 💦. The gap between Japanese and Indo-European languages is just that huge… 😭.
Wrong subject, wrong object, singular/plural mix-ups, definite/indefinite article errors—these happen so often that the meaning or nuance can end up completely different. (Compared to English-to-Japanese, those kinds of errors are relatively fewer.) To fix them, I end up giving instructions like “The original means this, so retranslate it” or “It has to be plural or the meaning changes—please fix it,” and we go back and forth in a human-vs-AI negotiation (even in erotic manga, getting the subject/object wrong can flip who’s top and who’s bottom, and whether it’s one dick or multiple completely changes the nuance between the lines 😂😂😂😂😂 Seriously, anyone who wants to mock erotic manga, step right up! (LOL)).
So yeah, I’m reminded every day that handing everything over to AI won’t magically give perfect translations. If you want truly proper Japanese-to-English translation, nothing beats asking a reliable human translator you trust. 👍👍👍 To my friends who always help me with this—I want to shout my gratitude from the rooftops! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! ✨✨✨
That said, as a tool for creating a “rough draft,” AI is genuinely helpful.
For now, these are the main ways I’m using AI in my manga production.
