Absolute banger of an OVA, really fun seeing Eris just glazing Rudy the entire time.

I love the undertated complexity of this otherwise straightfoorward OVA (which I think is an anime original), the black hooded assasins targeting an princess like girl and her knight in shining armor belying them representing a progressive faction against demon discrimination... meanwhile, Eris, by doing the, I would say, objectively good thing of saving a little girl in distress, contribuited to exsaserbate the racial discrimination in the city as the lady knight reported they were attacked by demons

I really like this OVA, it's fun having a whole episode with Eris as the main character! This story is in the Light Novel, I think it might be Volume 5? Also kind of interesting that the side with the little girl and gallant lady knight is the side which hates demons, while the other side, represented here by the assassins trying to kill a little girl, wants to live in peace with the demons

The OVA contains mostly material from the light novel that was cut from the anime. It wouldn't hurt to remember Cliff. For whatever reason, it is never explained in the anime, but in the LN, we learn that the Knight Lady is actually Zenith's sister. Did you notice that she looks exactly like Zenith? There is a short meeting between Rudeus and her later in the LN wich would be between episode 17 and 18, which is cut from the anime.

This was a neat episode. I think this is the first time Eris has killed humans. Interesting that she had zero hesitation. In terms of world-building this made me wonder about something: There are humans, demons (a collection of diverse sub-species), and beast-kin. All three races have their issues, wars, and prejudices, but generally seem to consider each other "human" in a broad sense. But this episode introduces "goblins" who seem to be inteligent and humanoid if barbaric (they wear clothes and use weapons) but appear to have no "human rights" at all, being hunted like animals. Eris has no qualms slaying them. Well, if they're like the ones in Goblin Slayer, one can appreciate the sentiment, but it's interesting they are singled out as distinct from demons, even feared ones like the superd...

No it’s not anime original.

To be fair, if the OVA contains material from the LN, then that material couldn't have been cut from the anime. The OVA is the anime, just not aired chronologically.

Greybeard

Well, it wasn't originally included in the anime; it was added later as an OVA. But I understand your point.

I’m so glad I’m watching this way after Mat did. I get so livid with the strange cuts and changes the anime made with this episode. Having Ruijerd follow Eris instead of head off to see the Church knight who owes him his life is a HUGE fuck up. The interactions with Millis folks during this episode will matter later in the story, yet nearly none of that setup was in the anime! The knight giving Ruijerd the letter which was supposed to let Ruijerd on the next boat but the harbor master denying the demon access, Theresa fawning all over her nephew, and her standing up to the harbor master and giving Rudi seasickness medicine for the next ship…..too, too damn much was changed in Millis.

17:00 What’s also lost upon the anime is ow extremely dangerous Eris’s line here is. Theresa’s faction of the Church is EXTREMELY anti-demon, as it is said. Like the dying dude says to Ruijerd later, the Pope wants peace with demons. Let’s just say that the situation in Millishion is insanely complicated.

Mat, hearing your excitement about Millis after this episode really makes me want to suggest that you read all of this series at some point after the anime has aired for a while. Yes, the anime has been pretty damn good so far, but tbh, it can’t hold a candle to my experience of binge reading this story originally. I was shocked, stunned, and bewildered countless times getting thru the novels. I can still feel the reverberations of feelings from back then.
