Catholicism and Anglicanism might as well be different religions, as they’re completely separate sects of Christianity. Even in real life it’s only a pretty recent phenomenon that the sects communicate with one another in an official capacity.

D. L. Pulver

It's interesting to compare Index religions to the real ones. The Catholic Church in Index is basically a powered-up version of the real one; the Church of England is a lot stronger and more powerful in Index, but today's church does have a woman as archbishop. Most of the once-underground Japanese Amakusa Christian church rejoined the mainstream Roman Catholic church in the late 19th century, but a tiny splinter faction, the Kakure Kirishitan, did retain the mix of Christian and Shinto practice they'd developed and still remains independent. Only a few hundred are left, but perhaps they inspired the Amakusa sect we see in the anime.
