Flash Gordon!!! 80s fantasy, an absolute classic!

ShadowDrgn

Also I would love you to watch The Last Dragon, 80s cheesy action!

Ian A

Masters of the Universe Krull

Joseph Olson

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen Ladyhawke- good movie, really bad ‘80’s soundtrack that completely clashes. Still, a good (not great) movie. Would have been better served with more appropriate music.

Joseph Olson

Underrated movie (Beastmaster)

Lee N.

Masters of the Universe (1987). Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, and Courtney Cox. Trust me, this first adaptation is well worth a watch.

Markus Doerig

Dragonslayer (1981) — One of the best dragon movies of the decade Conan the Destroyer 1984 (aka Conan 2)

N.T. Stars

I'm gonna cheat and say Troll 2. It was shot in the 80s! I want to see some bad movies on this channel, because I love them.

Stephanie Wahl

Willow, Krull, Excalibur, Witches of Eastwick, Ladyhawke, Erik the Viking, Iceman

Sir_Dalagad

Well you've done a few good ones already with The Princess Bride, The Neverending Story, The Dark Crystal, Legend, Willow, and recently Conan the Barbarian. How about Excalibur and Ladyhawke Can't wait for the 90's though

John Molt

Because I love you guys. My Neighbor Totoro (1988) — Whimsical, heartwarming fantasy with forest spirits and magical creatures. Pure comfort and wonder.

Joe J

Excalibur (1981)

Sir_Dalagad

The music sticks with you. Whenever someone says Flash Gordon I hear: "Flash ! Ahhh! Ahhhhh" What a wild movie

Nathan Jasper

The Black Cauldron (1985) and Masters of the Universe (1987)

Sir_Dalagad

Patreons: Does "The Burbs" count as fantasy? ;-)

Com1xguy

Ladyhawke, Excalibur and Krull!

To Wa

Dune (1984) Dragonslayer

Cliff Adams

Return to Oz My Neighbor Totoro

Darian Harman

You guys have already watched my all-time favorites in this category, so: The Flight of Dragons Krull

Christian Rennie

I second Krull or Dragonslayer. Along with Conan the Barbarian's soundtrack in one of my Gym Playlists, I also have Krull's soundtrack too. Drangonslayer I feel doesn't get enough love. Puppets-check, Magic-check, Adventure-check. Hmm, fantasy adjacent or actually modern fantasy: It might be a stretch but some of my all time fav 80s movies are "Something Wicked This Way Comes" (1983) and "Young Sherlock Holmes" (1985, Spielberg Production). I just realized that the sub-genre we might be looking for is called 'Sword & Sandal.' If that's the case, throw in "Beastmaster" (1983) for good measure. Maybe think about watching Something Wicked for Halloween and Young Sherlock for Xmas. Since those stories occur in those time frames. All of these movies unlock memories when I was a kid in the mid 80s watching them on pirated/hacked cable boxes on HBO and Showtime. I'd just lay on the floor with a pillow in front of our big 28" tv that was in an ornate wooden cabinet. You would have to press four buttons at the same time on the little cable box's button pad. The screen would go blank and then you could just put in whatever channel you wanted. Anyone else do that as a kid?

Alexis

Clash of the Titans (1981)

thomas king

Big Trouble in Little China, The Golden Child and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

Pop n Lock

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Barry

My top two choices: Dragonslayer (1981) Ladyhawke (1985) My next top two: Clash of the Titans (1981) The Beastmaster (1982) And the top two after that: Krull (1983) Conan the Destroyer (1984) And my final top two: Excalibur (1981) Time Bandits (1981) Non-80s honorable mentions top two: The 13th Warrior (1999) A Knight's Tale (2001)

Zephyr (AD)

Ladyhawke (1985) Perhaps the animated "The Return of the King" (1980) ?

Thadman

I, also, will recommend Dragonslayer (underrated) and Ladyhawke. Excalibur is the gold standard of the Arthurian legend. And also Highlander.

Barry

I would love to see this reaction but wouldn't Flash Gordon be SciFi?

Barry

They did Willow, go check it out. Yes to all the rest.

Mr. Writhms

"Time Bandits" (1981) "Brazil" (1985) Both co-written and directed by Terry Gilliam who directed "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".

Barry

If you like some older fantasy with good stop motion, check out some Ray Harryhausen movies: The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) Jason and the Argonauts (1963) The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973) Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977) He also did the stop motion for Clash of the Titans (1981)

Barry

They did Big Trouble in Little China, check it out. I would love to see a reaction of The Golden Child (1986), I haven't seen it in awhile.

Barry

Those are more SciFi but I second on both.

Barry

More of a comedy/who done it but I'm in.

Matt

Excalibur and Clash of the Titans!

Rob

Time bandits and Return to Oz

pinkdino99

Highlander was one of their first

pinkdino99

Beastmaster and Excalibur are the better ones

David Perkins

oh, this is easy for me, "legend", 1985, starring Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, Tim Curry and directed by Ridley Scott and "Highlander", 1986, starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown and directed by Russell Mulcahy. you're welcome!

Jon Johns

Okay, I had to dig deep, but.... (Disclaimer: many SUBGENRE films are primarily Fantasy, so, give folks a break 😉.) These are my favorites! Time Bandits (1981) Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) Wings of Desire (1987)* [German Language, Black & White] Heavy Metal (1981) Excalibur (1981) The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) Akira (1988)* [Japanese Anime] Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) Once Bitten (1985) Always (1989)

Jon Johns

New Band Name!!! -- Called it! 🤣

Jon Johns

I always confuse Krull & Beastmaster! Which has the deadly frisbee? 🤣

Gareth

Inner Space --(Fantasy Sci-Fi) The Golden Child --(Dark Fantasy Comedy) The Monster Squad --(Horror Fantasy) Gremlins 2 --(i seem to recall you watching the first one, so a good follow up)

Miles E Coburn

These are my favorites (of ones you haven't already done): "Ladyhawke" (1985) - Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer. A young thief escapes the dungeons of Aquilar. A disgraced former captain of the guard wants him to help him enter the citadel so he can kill the Bishop who cursed the woman he loves and himself. "Clash of the Titans" (1981) - Harry Hamlin, Burgess Meredith, Judi Bowker - Mythological story of Perseus, who must battle Medusa and the Kraken to save the Princess Andromeda.

Kenny Teeology

"Time Bandits" and "Erik the Viking" are both good Monty Python actors/director spin-offs. Also "Brazil" has some sci-fi/fantasy elements and will get you in the mindset for Loki: season 2.

thebeefmaster

Harry and the Hendersons (1987), Big (1988) and Splash (1984)

TM2

Krull (1983)

Eddy

Legend (1985) Theatrical Release Masters of the Universe (1987) Mannequin (1987) Field Of Dreams (1989)

OddThomas

Starman, Legend, Cocoon (though personally I think the sequel is better), Masters of the Universe

James M

I think you've seen a lot of this kind of movie. Here are three slightly out of the mainstream but all quite entertaining movies. Time Bandits Excalibur Quest for Fire

David Nelson

Krull. Oh the reactions will be wild.

Allister Fiend

Krull, Dragonslayer, The Last Unicorn, Legend, Excalibur

Dennis B

Eric the Viking, Time Bandits, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen... goes without saying I don't know if The Golden Child falls under Fantasy too, but i think it should.

James M

Ah "Wings of Desire" by Wenders. A truly beautiful film. Challenging but equally rewarding. The opposite might be "Heavy Metal". You should really know what the magazine Heavy Metal was like before you watch this. I don't think I'm incorrect in saying the readership was very heavily skewed towards men under the age of 20. "The Purple Rose of Cairo" would be an amazing choice. It's a remarkable film. You would need to turn a deaf ear to certain people who like to make blanket condemnations.

Jon Johns

Yeah, Heavy Metal was a product of its time 🤣, but very fantasy oriented! Cairo is a great movie! I can't think of anything else like it! Wings was, of course, 'americanized' with City of Angels in 1998. It's an okay movie, but, like, strays so far from the original, it can hardly compare. 🤷‍♂️

Ari

Excalibur and Clash of The Titans, both from 1981

D K

Highlander (1986) there are 3 sequels, they are bad, but the original is really good

John Boone

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

Christopher Howard

I love Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I really hope they do a reaction to that movie one day.

Helly R

Excalibur

John Ostlund

Labrynth is always a fun time!

Skyruff Creative

So many already mentioned are good but let’s expand the scope a bit: Lifeforce(1985) and Trancers(1984)

Skyruff Creative

How about with some funny: short circuit (1986) and the adventures of buckarooo banzai(1984)

Skyruff Creative

With some waistland: spacehunter- adventures in the forbidden zone (1983) and cherry 2000 (1987)

Skyruff Creative

With some tunes: heavy metal (1981) and Howard the duck (1986)

Skyruff Creative

Failed star vehicles : Reno Williams: the adventures begin (1985) and steel dawn (1987)

Kevin B.

I think it fall way more into scifi even though I love it I dont think it fits on a fantasy poll

Kevin B.

Krull has the frisbee haha

Barry

They did Highlander (1986), you should check it out. You're right, they can stop right there. We don't need to talk about what came after.

Barry

I think The Golden Child would be considered Urban/Modern Fantasy. This would be a great choice.

WastedPo

Not a new suggestion, but if you haven't seen Close Encounters as of now, please do the Director's Cut. (And avoid the "Special Edition.")

Simone's Coconut Squire

But really, what’s more 80s than slapping a pop-rock soundtrack on everything?

Simone's Coconut Squire

Some good stuff in the 90s especially with Dragonheart in there but I think these two will adore Reign of Fire from 2002. It’s Mad Max with dragons.

Daniel Griffith

The keep (1983) has the most epic synthesizer music. It is a Michael Mann film.

OddThomas

Not 80s but Stardust from 2007 I would say is one of the best fantasy movies

D K

But thats what I said: Highlander(1986) But Yes there ist Just this one

WastedPo

The Secret of NIMH (1982): The first feature animated movie directed by Don Bluth when he was trying to challenge a then-floundering Disney. The music score by Jerry Goldsmith is one of the most beautiful ever written for an animated movie.

Michael Milz

Baron Munchausen, Heavy Metal

D K

OK you recommend IT, i thougt I had a Typo or smth... Sorry

Clipped

A movie so bad it's good...Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone. It's a bit of a Road Warrior clone and the co-star is Molly Ringwald of The Breakfast Club/Sixteen Candles fame. It's cheesy but it's fun.

Andrew Heller

Seriously….you got dragonheart, pagemaster, indian in the cupboard,

David Caine

Beastmaster is one of those I have loved since childhood. I remember the first time I watched it, and so many times after. Clash of the Titans (1981) is a must watch classic. And I'm gonna cheat and suggest another one, because of the new movie out now more in the spirit of the cartoon, watch Masters of the Universe (1987 ) not exactly the He-man movie we wanted back then, but it's fun enough with Dolph Lundgren, a young Courtney Cox, Frank Langella as Skeletor.

Jon Johns

Michael Mann has some bangers! Thief is an amazing film, add Tangerine Dream, and it's EPIC.

Jon Johns

Remo!!!!! What a great movie!

Jon Johns

+1 Time Bandits!

Jon Johns

For a long time Cocoon was difficult to find streaming, is it widely available now?

Jon Johns

Brazil!!! Crazy pants good stuff.

TeamHoover

Ladyhawke for sure, and also for a comedy/fantasy genre blend try Splash

Meredith

The Three Amigos 🏜️ , Conan the Destroyer 🗡️, Peggy Sue Got Married 👰🏼‍♀️ 💖

Gareth

Couple of last-minute suggestions that i thought of last night while looking for a good horror to get my teeth into: An American Werewolf In London (1981) Puppet Master (1989)

VirtuallyVeronicka

1. Return to Oz (1985) - a cult classic that is strangely captivating and often creepy. 2. Honey, I Shrunk the Kids - a super creative storyline and fun adventure!

VirtuallyVeronicka

So many fun 80’s rom-coms and action/adventure films to work through once you’ve explored the fantasies. 😉

Kevin Colwell

Blood of Heroes (Jugger's Pride)

Lord Stag

Dragonslayer (1981), The Last Unicorn (1982).
