Hi Everyone! It's good to be back watching 80's fantasy, especially one starring Arnold. As with so much of the 80's fantasy especially, this movie was darker than I expected it to be, but we still had a great time. So many quotable lines, crazy fights, and awesome adventures, I hope you'll join us watching Conan The Barbarian!

This movie spawned 100 straight to VHS sword and sorcery movies, yet none are this glorious or wonderful. Its that score. Its James Earl Jones. Its this world which had featured in books and a really great Marvel comics run, a rich world that is still being explored today (I REALLY recommend Conan: Exiles on PC). And of course it is Arnie in his first big role, absolutely owning this character. Destroyer is OK. But the next best sword and sorcery movies are The Beastmaster and Excalibur. The Marvel comics are frikkin' awesome btw...

My favorite way to watch this film has always been with some friends, some beers, and the Arnold Schwarzeneggar commentary track. "Look at me sleeping". "This is where I get the sword". I have probably never laughed harder in my life.

Just watched your reaction. The second Conan film, "Conan the Destroyer" is even better!

This cemented James Earl Jones as the greatest villain voice of all time ... Vader and Thulsa Doom, it just doesn't get more evil.

The original source material Robert E. Howard created Conan and wrote around 21 stories featuring him before his death in 1936 at age 30. They were pulp fiction — gritty, action-packed sword & sorcery set in the fictional Hyborian Age (a prehistoric era between the fall of Atlantis and the rise of known civilizations). Famous stories include The Tower of the Elephant, Red Nails, Beyond the Black River, and Queen of the Black Coast. The stories were later collected into books, most notably published by Gnome Press in the 1950s and then Berkley/Ace paperbacks in the 1960s–70s with iconic Frank Frazetta cover art — which is what most people picture when they think of Conan. After Howard died Other authors (most notably L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter) wrote new Conan stories and completed unfinished ones, which are more controversial among fans. Karl Edward Wagner is considered to have done the best posthumous work staying true to Howard's tone. The movies The 1982 film with Arnold Schwarzenegger is loosely inspired by the character and setting but is largely an original story — not a direct adaptation of any specific Howard tale. The 2011 remake similarly draws on the general lore rather than one specific story. Howard's original stories are well worth reading — they're surprisingly dark, literary, and fast-paced for 1930s pulp fiction.

The scenary does look otherworldly, unless you're Spanish i guess :P The movie was mostly shot in Spain

Just wanted to put this out there for those who might be interested. In Arnold's show for Netflix "Fubar" his character uses a puppet to talk about his feelings in a therapy session, and at one point briefly becomes a puppet.

I would fall asleep to this soundtrack at night when I was in high school. I had to buy a new cassette after about 6 months, the tape broke. Truly, one of the greatest soundtracks. One of, if not THE best, sword and sorcery movie.

Y'all don't need to rush on "Conan the Destroyer" because "King Conan" isn't set to start filming until next year, with a release on track for 2028 with Arnold coming back in the title role. I. Cannot. Wait.

Guy-on-Couch

"the friggin orgy people are eating body parts!" "There's a line I never thought I'd hear" hahahahaha

I saw this in the theater when I was in high school, after I'd begged my mom to go see it. Both of us were pretty shocked and I really liked it but it was pretty horrific in parts. Pretty sure she regretted taking me.🤣 I don't remember details, 'cause I don't think I've seen it all the way through since the 80s, but I remember the kinda shocked "feeling" I had about it. So, I'm interested to watch it again with you guys. I remember liking Conan the Destroyer, but feeling like it was pale in comparison to this one, although I don't remember details of either movie.😅 Is this the extended cut I've been seeing online or theatrical? I think I may have seen the extended one when it came out, but doubt if I could tell what was added in. Not a lot, if I recall. I feel like, maybe, a sex scene was added? But, I'm not sure.

The Wheel of Pain that Conan and the other children were chained to was used to grind grain. Fun fact: Originally, they chose a different person to compose the musical score and also considered a modern pop-like musical score before finally choosing Basil Poledouris. It was definitely the right decision.

The character Conan is the invention of Robert E. Howard. This movie story was written by Oliver Stone (yes the famous director) and then rewritten by this movie's director John Milius. So this story is not a Howard story. After Howard's early death other writers wrote more Conan stories. Marvel acquired the rights and published decades of Conan the Barbarian as a monthly title. It was primarily the effort of Roy Thomas at Marvel to secure the rights and he wrote the book for the first decade himself. So it's a combination of Howard, L. Sprague de Camp the author and publisher who kept the title alive and in print as well as co-writing new stories, Roy Thomas who devoted a decade to cementing Conan's place at Marvel, and producers Edward Pressman and Dino De Laurentiis who gave us this character in film.

Oh wow, I had no idea there was so much other stuff created in this world! Comics AND videogames!? Haha, hell yeah!!

MaplenutsReact

I couldn't imagine watching this with a parent!! Hahaha. And I think we watched the extended version

MaplenutsReact

I love this so much! If we still used cassette tapes instead of just streaming music, Jordan would be the exact same - going through tape after tape of movie soundtracks haha

Mega Reacts

Thank you. Music production is a hobby of mine.

If you notice Stranger Things season 4 Hopper uses Conan's sword hehe not many notice it.

Alex

Now watch Hawk the Slayer, Beast Master, and Ladyhawke. You will not regret it.

Alex

Also, when you watched Legend, the American release, you should have watched the European release as well, it's the same movie but so different.
