Hi Everyone! We've got another scary one this week! I really didn't know what I was getting myself into with this movie, and Jordan remembered almost nothing from when he watched it way back when. We both really appreciated how well it was made, but were also terrified! Hahaha. We hope you enjoy watching along!

Oooo good one. Iconic and one of the best villains ever portrayed. Let's watch!

I suppose Hannibal isn't really the "villain" from a storytelling standpoint. He's actually supportive of the protagonist, Clarice. He actually helps her achieve her goal and helps her resolve her most character building childhood trauma. But that character is sooo evil and Anthony Hopkins does such a good job of portraying him. Actually all of the acting in this is superb. Much better than you'd expect from a horror film and certainly award worthy. By the way, I think when Lecter told Senator Martin that he loved her suit he already knew Buffalo Bill was trying to make a suit out of her daughter. I think he was shooting for a little irony to come back to her later if her daughter was found too late. A psychologist as a villain is terrifying. This was originally a series of books and the movies led to a TV series about Hannibal. The character is based on a combination of several actual serial killers.

At the Academy Awards, the so-called "Big Five" awards are those for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay (either Best Original Screenplay or Best Adapted Screenplay). Only three films have won all five of these major awards: It Happened One Night (1934), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), and The Silence of the Lambs (1991).

You're so right, he's a very complicated character in that he's terrifying, but also helpful... and very polite haha. And good catch with the suit! I remember him saying that, but I didn't realize why!

MaplenutsReact

I totally understand why this movie won all of those awards, now that we've seen it!!

John Colson

You really should watch the sequel Hannibal (the 2001 movie). Yes, Jodie Foster refused to return as Clarice but Julianne Moore is great in the role. Also, it's more Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal. Oh and Gary Oldman.

Also Chandra, your EWWWW! is the best 😂

Fun fact - Precious the dog had a decent career in Hollywood. Her name was Darla and yous have already seen her in Batman Returns:)

MaplenutsReact

I think I remember her actually! She's the one that jumped up and bit the batarang!

Such a great movie. I’ve watched far too many reactions to this but it’s very rewatchable to me. Lots of great shot, tension building and atmospheric music. I just spotted such a great credit during your summary - Moth wrangler and stylist 😆 I’m not a student of cinema so I can only suggest some of my all time greats: The Shawshank Redemption The Green Mile 12 Angry Men Forrest Gump Pulp Fiction Psycho Seven The Sixth Sense Rocky Interstellar

MaplenutsReact

Never seen it! But now if I do, I'll keep my eyes peeled :)

MaplenutsReact

Oh wow, thank you for all of these recommendations! Also, "Moth Wrangler and Stylist" is probably the best credit I could imagine! Hahahaha

Anthony Donato

Great reaction you guys. I think you guys would really like World War Z with Brad Pitt, and A Quiet Place.

MaplenutsReact

Oooo thank you for the recommendations! I've heard of World War Z... I think a few friends of ours really liked it!!

djKENTO

Please continue this series. Nobody ever reacts to Hannibal or Red Dragon and I think Red Dragon is fantastic. The entire cast of Red Dragon brings their A-Game. It’s really great.

Dan Sopranos

Maybe you guys could do SILENCE OF THE LAMBS 2 aka HANNIBAL (2001) Its a very good sequel 🧠🫕

MaplenutsReact

Good to know! I wonder if it's as unsettling as this movie was.

Dan Sopranos

Its actually even more ☠️☠️☠️

Dan Sopranos

cant wait till its gets its turn for you guys to react to it 👍

Raven Dark

100% yes to all of these movies.

Raven Dark

So my recommendation for a banger of a classic that's super intense and has that "you should have already seen this" feel would be The Fugitive. Harrison Ford is in it, and he's fantastic. I think you guys would love it.

MaplenutsReact

Awesome! I love getting the "you should have already seen this/you'll love it" recommendations!! Thank you ❤️

The sequel Hannibal by Ridley Scott is very underrated. The prequel Red Dragon, or if you prefer the 1980s TV movie Manhunter are both excellent also, as is the TV show with Mads Mikkelsen in the titular Hannibal role. Even better is a TV show from David Fincher (Se7en, Zodiac) called Mindhunter which is the story of the formation of the FBI Behavioural Sciences Division with FBI agents interviewing real world serial killers and building their own profiles. It is BONE CHILLING.
