What a story! I only wish I made it in time to see the lights you’re talking about at Rolling Hills, I had lacrosse practice so I was super late and only got there in time to see Kutless, which was a bummer. I had my own icey experience with Jon Micah as a fan and friend of the band Nine Lashes when they were opening for Kutless in 2012…so I wasn’t surprised to hear that he was the source of the drama

I’m genuinely curious as to what your JMS experience was if you would like to share

There’s a few short stories… First, my dad saw at Costco once in 2006 when I was in high school and he didn’t give him the time of day (we lived in the same Portland suburb), so that wasn’t a good start. But for me it started when I met them after their Winter Jam set in 2010 and I kindly asked why they didn’t play any of their rock songs (their set was literally 6 worship songs, Strongtower and 5 from the recent It Is Well record) and Jon Micah seemed offended and said “We’re out here in support of a worship record, why would we play rock songs?” He pretty much shut me down and was not cool about it. Jeff Gilbert (their drummer at the time) pulled me aside and we had a conversation about it (he agreed they should play rock songs) and he was so down to earth. He gave me his email and said he’d put me on the guest list for their next show in town. Several months later they came back and when I emailed Jeff for tickets I requested that they please play some of there old rock songs. Not only did he get me tickets, but to my surprise they played some of there old rock songs…but before they did Jon made what felt like a passive aggressive comment from stage saying something like “you guys have been asking us to bring back the rock songs so here you go” and they played a few in the middle of an otherwise full on worship set. At the merch both Jeff and James were super cool but Jon was cold to me. It probably didn’t help that I had a Nine Lashes shirt on and was hanging with them (they were the openers), I had become friends with them at that point. Jon Micah almost seemed bothered by that, he did say anything but it was the look he gave us. The Nine Lashes guys said that back stage that Kutless wasn’t friendly to them at all. And after the show they scolded the runner for not getting their Taco Bell back before the hard shells got soggy. A year later I saw them at Fishfest and Jon was yet again not friendly (I’m not sure if actually remember me or not, this was back home in Portland, the previous interactions were in Dayton, OH near where I went to college) but James was super kind. Jeff was non longer with them at that point unfortunately. A year or so later they played a hometown Christmas show, there was so few people there after the set was over I just walked right up to Jon. I told him I loved the set and thought his vocals were great, he was actually cool this time. He told me he appreciated the compliment because he didn’t think he did well because he had a cold. We chatted for a minute or two and then his kids came up to see him so I let him be with his family and I walked away. Later that night we were crossing paths in the church hallways and as we approached he used jacket to hide his face behind his jacket so that he didn’t have to talk to me. That was really sad to me because I was kind a brief in earlier conversation and I always had nothing but admiration for him. Obviously there’s nothing egregious here, but plenty enough to leave a bad taste in my mouth as a long time and loyal fan of the band.

Among your many talents, Jessy... memory. I'm sure its in no small part to the mark these events left on you, but these days I can only recall fragments here and there from 20 years ago. Here you are retelling them in vivid detail. Amazing.

Man, this is a great episode but it's a bummer to hear about JMS like this. I just hope he's changed in the years since this or some of the events I've read in the other comments.
