"This is such an intense scene but why do they have to be naked?" Them being naked, is, in fact, a big part of the point. The point of portraying them bathing together, being naked and being so close to each other physically is to showcase their close relationship and vulnerability towards each other. Most scenes like this in Monogatari have a reason for being there, but ESPECIALLY this one imo makes it extremely obvious that they're not just naked here for some fanservice or whatever. It is making an important marrative point.

Not to mention, people talk about the series like all the fanservice is just there because it’s trying to entice the audience but the whole meaning of it (especially in this scene) is there for the purpose of our POV with Araragi. We see this through his eyes and while we see girls like Nadeko clearly trying to entice him, almost none of the shots in this episode are seen as sexually charged - they may be naked the whole time, but the camera and Araragi almost never focus on that because that’s not how he’s seeing their relationship.

Glad you found my last comment helpful. I'm thoroughly enjoying your reactions to my favorite anime series. Well done for remembering Karen's appearance at the start once Shinobu explained the wreathe-fire bee! I didn't notice that myself the first time through. Regarding Senjougahara and Hanekawa, it may be worth reinforcing that we know only what Araragi tell us (and that may not be trustworthy), so some things we have to figure out on our own. For example, recall from the last episode that Senjougahara knew Araragi was scheduled to be tutored by Hanekawa on July 29. It is likely that Senjougahara and Hanekawa are coordinating their tutoring sessions, given that Araragi is alternating between the two of them. If so, they may have also made some sort of deal regarding which of them would date him, given what Hanekawa said, but Araragi wouldn't know anything about that. Also, Kanbaru told Araragi that Senjougahara and Hanekawa have some sort of arrangement going on. Meanwhile, I have to defend Oshino. Don't forget that not only did he say Shinobu had run away to find herself, but Hachikuji told Araragi she saw Shinobu at Mister Donut, which Araragi later visited during his search for her. Presumably, Shinobu slid into his shadow at that point, but we didn't see it happen because Araragi didn't see it happen. Regarding the mention of "Golden Chocolate" after the subtitled line, "I like pondering," during the bathroom conversation, two of the various types of donuts available from Mister Donut are Pon de Ring and Golden Chocolate, so if Araragi is going to buy her donuts, he should buy those two. Note that Shinobu's line in Japanese includes "Pon de Ring" as well. That said, Shinobu clearly also likes metal donuts (a.k.a. "handcuffs"). Finally, Shinobu glared at both Sengoku and Kanbaru, not just Sengoku, and then she ran away the next day. Black Hanekawa tried to get Araragi to figure out why during their attempt to find her.

Pondering is kinda a bad translation or a mistype btw.. when Shinobu says “I like Pondering, but my favorite is Golden Chocolate” it should’ve been spaced out like “Pon De Ring” If you remember from Bake there’s an episode where Shinobu is sulking in the corner because Oshino ate the last donut.. those are donut types, if you’re going to buy two, get Pon De Ring and Golden Chocolate donuts.

The opening lyric translations are really bad with the subtitles you’re using I think. More so the senjougahara one which I feel like completely changed the context of it.

well, whether fanservice was the point or not they absolutely throw a ton in there XD. but i suppose i get what you mean. though i would argue there ARE WAYS to show intimacy without everyone being naked for the entire episode. it really doesn't bother me all that much as i stated during the reaction but they definitely don't HAVE to be naked to get the point across (responding to nailu)

my brother, you cannot sit there and watch that and tell me there wasn't focus on the nakedness/wasn't sexually charged because that just isn't true. maybe not all the time, but theres an entire scene of him staring at her ass and getting called a perv and blushing about it, theres a scene of shinobu slapping her thighs, theres an entire scene of just shinobu's butt as she walks to araragi, theres an unreal amount of feet shots, theres scenes with her in what i would call "interesting" poses, like come on now lets be realistic here lol (responding to oshi)

interesting, i was told coalgirls is a really good translation to use going forward so maybe i'll have to ask deeper about that

Totally valid reaction to Shinobu suddenly appearing and speaking, had the same reaction too during my first viewing! The toilet scene was so perfectly executed in every scene, constantly building on Shinobu and Araragi's relationship and their power dynamics even in the small visual details of how they behave and physicall treat each other

I always thought of the word Husk as just emotionally dead, whereas a "vegetable" means completely brain dead or in a coma. Random common theme that comes to mind is "He was a husk of a man after his wife died."

While everyone is like HOLY SHIT SHE TALKED when this episode happens, for me it was the abruptness. Also, her going from 0 to yapmaster 5000 instantly.

bluestReacts

yeah thats definitely the way to take it. just the results from kizumonogatari kind of leave you feeling like she's just not there and the show definitely purposefully misleads you into thinking that way

I think a lot of it can come down to there being a distinction between the anime and the novel. Let me first talk from just the perspective of the novels: Monogatari in general uses sexuality in multiple ways at the same time, the main ones being; One: To be a somewhat parody of how fanservice is generally done in anime, purposefully exaggerating or being over the top for the sake of comedic effect. Two: To show emotional connection, closeness, vulnerability. The Hanekawa boob scene in Kizu is another example of the second being a bit more clear and easy to interpret, though it's still played less straight and more for the sake of comedy than this scene. In my opinion, the Shinobu bath scene really for 99% of its runtime is not at all a "sexual" or "horny" one, but an extremely intimate one. Not to demonise "sexuality" either, but I simply don't think that is what is being portrayed in the scene. Now you have to somewhat divorce that analysis from the anime's visuals, as ESPECIALLY Nise was particularly horny on the directing, and I think maybe the Shinobu bath scene is the worst example of it in the sense that it might fail to portray to a viewer like you what the actual intention behind it is. Personally I still think overall, this bath scene is way less horny than it could have potentially ended up as in Nise's context. If you ask me, even though there are a good number of shots here, if you view it in comparison to other stuff from the season, I think maybe you can at least somewhat see that it is toned down a bit. When I watched this for the first time, I did not think it to feel particularly egregious, I hardly even noticed the "sus" shots that are there, but of course experience can vary and maybe you just straight up disagree with my assessment of the scene being toned down at all. I just think it would be a bit sad for the exclusive take away to be "Bruh why are they naked" rather than the intended meaning of it but I can understand that it's possible that, depending on the viewer, the anime may very well obscure it quite a bit.

I always thought it was a purposeful pun. The conversation was about her thinking and sulking the past few months, then as if to make a joke she says "I like pondering (Pon de Ring), but Golden Chocolate is my favorite" to lighten to mood and change the subject, something that seems to be affirmed by Araragi's knowing smirk and confirmation.
