Really great episode and conclusion to Karen's arc. Took a minute to get everything so hold your comments until you watch the full video lol. But I'm sure I missed some stuff along the way and would appreciate being filled in !

1:12:39 the MTBB translation isn't exactly wrong, its that they sometimes phrase things differently in a way some people don't like, IMO they're a good translation for the series. Maybe in some scenes where your curious about how certain things are phrased, might be good to switch between them to see how they differ.

yeah in doing so for this episode it really helped me get a better understanding of what the message was for the scene as a whole.

I could be far off, but my interpretation of this story, and especially with what Kaiki said about the bee being just hypnotism and that what is in the book is fake, but aknowledging that Koyomi took half of it from his sister nonetheless, is that if you believe in something, it might come real, even if it's fake at first. The bee might not have existed as it is said in the book, but since people read the book and believed in it, the bee now exist. But since Kaiki doesn't really believe in it, the bee that he used on Karen couldn't not exist and then isn't real. Then why Karen was sick and why Koyomi was able to took half of it ? Because Shinobu know about it and said it to Koyomi, so that become real for them. It's the whole question about truth and wrong, yeah, there are facts that are indeniable truth, but are they ? They are truth only because someone described them like that. The first person that called the color red like that, give it this attribut, then red become the truth, but what if this person called it green ? An historical fact is truth only because peoples said it, we could have proofs of it, but even these proofs could be interpreted to go with the story said before or contradictory (exemple, the dinosaurs that we see all this years, might not have looked like that, it's the interpretation of the skeleton, but we can not know the color of their skin, their sound or even if their skin was reptilian or had feather like some other proof might say). So the whole story about being allies of justice or justice itself, they might be fake, but since they believe so much in it, they are pretty close to the real deal. But again, it's my interpretation of all of that, I could be right, or wrong ^^.

You beat me to commenting on this theme, so I'll just add one more thing in general agreement. While figuring out what is true and what is a lie in what Kaiki says is delightfully challenging, I think this statement from him is true: "You understand the mind of someone who doesn't believe in ghosts but is still scared of them, right? I'm something similar." He knows oddities exist, but he also knows that much of their existence is dependent on what human beings think of them. Therefore, he chooses to deny that they exist. Black Hanekawa and Araragi touched on the topic of oddity-human interaction during their conversation in Tsubasa Cat, and I think your second paragraph explains the bee very well.

Did you realize who the speaker is in the text card after the OP? Regarding Koyomi's statement to Karen about "self-sacrifice" versus "self-satisfaction," I don't think it's a coincidence that he says that after she brings up Hanekawa. The terms were also used in a conversation he had with Hanekawa in Kizumonogatari part 2 before the fight with Guillotine Cutter. He's in awe of all she's done for him, and she deflects his feelings by saying she's not really who he thinks she is. What he calls self-sacrifice, she says, she considers self-satisfaction. It looks like Koyomi is trying to teach Karen the lesson he learned from Hanekawa. Meanwhile, YouTube can show you what happens when rubidium comes into contact with water. Looking forward to your reaction to "Tsukihi Phoenix!"

I think that the dialogue with Karen explores a lot of different variations of "fake" like the later conversation with Kaiki is all exploring the various type of fakes. One of those variations being hypocrisy. Hanekawa brings it up in ep. 4 when she says it sounds like Araragi is talking to himself when he tells he tells Karen the whole spiel about being strong vs. being right. It's also why I like the subs you used when originally watching the episode better vs. the ones you went back to at the end . He is being a hypocrite when he tells Karen that self-sacrifice is wrong because it means your conviction is coming from an external source vs. self-satisfaction where you are doing something because it is truly what you believe. We've seen Araragi consistently look to sacrifice himself throughout the show so far over doing things that would make him genuinely happy and satisfied (Kizu is all about this where he literally wants to sacrifice himself for Kiss-Shot, along with the countless times he seemed willing to die in Bake including the Kanbaru and Hanekawa arcs). This is his sense of justice, he doesn't do it because of his own interest, and instead he willingly sacrifices himself because he thinks of others. His sisters have a very similar sense of justice (Karen going to see Kaiki alone and taking the bee). Araragi is being a hypocrite when admonishes her for her sense of justice and being a fake. However, Araragi also views his own sense of justice as being fake, which is why he mentions that if they are fine with living their lives with an inferiority complex, then they should be proud fakes (ironically like Kaiki). Araragi has his own inferiority complex about his sense of justice and while he doesn't endorse it for his sisters, it makes him proud that they are travelling down the same path. Because they are taking the harder path than doing out of self-satisfaction, then doesn't that make them the real things? This is contrasted nicely later in the episode with Senjo's motivations. She isn't an ally of justice and is going against Kaiki because she wants to for her own reasons. In a way, even though Senjo is self-motivated and has real convictions (making her "real"), isn't Araragi's "fake" sense of justice more admirable (making it, ironically, more real)?

yeah i wanted to say araragi was being hypocritical in this reaction and i believe i even began to but it was hard to draw from where exactly the hypocrisy began as some of the sentences were somewhat wordy. but that's definitely in line with what i was thinking because this man araragi literally throws himself in self sacrifice at literally every issue he can to save someone lol

rwc_clt

I think another way of understanding Koyomi's conversation with Karen is to view his contrast of self-sacrifice and self-satisfaction as a discussion of motivation, not action. Yes, Koyomi's actions have been sacrificial. However, if his motivation is self-sacrifice, he would not have been so in awe of Hanekawa when he believed that was the motivation for her actions in Kizumonogatari. If he's also motivated by self-sacrifice, he should have seen her as a kindred spirit. He saved Kiss-Shot for his own sake, not hers. When he agrees to let her suck his blood, he doesn't say anything about dying for her sake. Instead, he reflects on how terrible he is and how dying would let him be reborn to a better life. Skipping to Tsubasa Cat, he had a moment of willingness to die for Hanekawa not for her sake, but for his own satisfaction at fulfilling what he believed to be his obligation toward her (until he realized Senjougahara would kill her, thereby nullifying his effort). Thus, I don't see Koyomi as a hypocrite for what he says to Karen. He's not telling her something he doesn't believe himself. Instead, I see a boy in his late teens who is still figuring things out about life telling his younger sister, "You're doing the right things, but you should do them for a different reason," which she doesn't understand. Once he realizes she doesn't understand, then, as the discussion from @deezer notes, he ends the fight with the line about being proud fakes. Of course, I could be wrong. Monogatari is complex enough to allow me that.

Interesting. It does boil down to whether Araragi was just suicidal in Kizu vs. whether he was acting out of his own motivation to help others. My answer is actually that both are true. Araragi was suicidal in Kizu and wanted to feel the relief of death, but he also did not want his life to end for no reason so, with his sense of justice, he wanted to die to save someone else. This is both self-sacrificing and self-centered (although the self-centered part of it still needed to frame it as self-sacrificing). Unfortunately, I have to ignore your point about Hanekawa since I can't get into it without spoilers, but I have a theory on that as well. Koyomi is being a giant hypocrite to Karen throughout Karen Bee, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. He is just another nisemono, which I think this arc teaches us isn't necessarily a bad thing.

not at all! just been taking a bit of a break as ive been insanely swamped IRL

Lemon

Do you have any estimate of when you'll resume the show?

deezer

Yeah. Would be good to get a timeline since its been close to 1.5 months since the last episode.

Russell Gambardella

I've been really enjoying your Monogatari reactions! I was wondering if there are any concrete plans to continue the series?

bluestReacts

There is in fact not set concrete plans in place at the moment. Do I really want to though? Absolutely yes and I am trying to find a good time to really get back to it

Tony Wegner

Yeah, going on like 4 months atm. And fair, doesn't owe us anything and Monogatari is really long. But it would just be nice to know if it's fully dropped. Since a bunch of other shows are getting more regular updates, would be nice to know what the plan is (dropped, will come after another show ends, etc.) I subbed after Kizu reactions hit YouTube, was pleased with the amount of Nise on here, but it doesn't make much sense to stay if its 1. been this long and 2. hasn't been communicated when it'll be back. No shade or anything, just trying to give viewer PoV; real life gets busy, np. I'll likely just return after there's a backlog then. Hopefully we at least get to finish the season. I know Monogatari viewers in particular can be Patreon heavy. So even if it doesn't do numbers on YT, I have a feeling its one of those shows that people really enjoy the uncuts for.

Tony Wegner

Russell its very funny, but I think I've seen you in every Patreon comments section for Monogatari reactions lmao. Such a weird microcosm. Infinitely rewatchable show though. If I'm not mistaken, AutoSave, Chillih and Nessah, Teaboo maybe?, cawcawTV? Semblance of Sanity maybe? Haha, now that I'm listing them, I'm realizing I have a problem :P Anyways, just a funny thing that jumped out at me.

Russell Gambardella

Haha yes I've been in Autosave and Chillih and Nessas' Patreons and I remember you being an avid Monogatari enjoyer from them! I'm aware that Semblance of Sanity has watched it but haven't checked out their reactions to it. And yes, it's so rewatchable. I'm continuously amazed by the complexity in character writing and exploration of themes alongside the madness of everything else haha. It's understandable to not prioritize Monogatari amidst Nise lol but let us hope he presses on and gets into the thick of the amazing parts :). Once I saw his Frieren and Kizu reactions on YouTube I just had to subscribe

Vueko

and all caught up, really loved how much you enjoyed all the banter and character dynamics that make this show so special, now to wait and cope for it's return

Parnik

waiting....... :(
