This one was a bit spicy wasn't it!!? What I really enjoyed is the visual tone in the cinematic and how they used lighting to change the emotions of the brothers. This for me was a step up from the previous 3 we've covered on the channel. This is the Star Wars I want, this tone, this storytelling and this cinematography. Oh Boy...

These are neither Jedi or Sith. They are a empire from another Galaxi, that simultaneously attacks the sith empire and the Republic. They are far superior technological, and that is why we see the twins wreck both sides so easily. Basically this empire, the eternal empire, completely takes over both the Republic and the sith empire Game wise this was a big expansion that started the new story after the original main story was finished.

I like how the basic trope is white = light = good and black = dark = bad, normally. But here we have the 'good' guy in white be more of a dark, impulsive, aggressive guy while the 'bad' guy is more composed and more of a 'good guy'. As far as they can even be put into a good/bad category.

Good stuff man! These cinematics are what inspired me as a kid and got me interested in CGI. If it weren't for these I probably would not be in film school right now haha. Really appreciate the breakdowns as always! Good stuff

You mentioned lighting from above to make characters look more evil. I agree that that works, but I'm curious why do you think it is that the 'Paramount lighting' from above makes people look more beautiful? Thanks!

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

I've never heard of this before but that sounds so good! The movies have never covered anything like this right?

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

Great question but the light isn't directly above them like this lighting. Paramount lighting is above but 45 degrees down from the top angled towards the forehead. This is how we create beauty lighting and the reason being is it removes all the dark bags and brings out the cheekbones. Paramount lighting is actually a hard light or between super soft (Lightbox) and hard. It still gives you that contrast on the shadows so under the nose and edge of the cheeks making it look old school hollywood cinematic. Replace that hard light with a massive softbox and you get beauty products commercial lighting. Two very different styles yet the light source is in the same place. This cinematic had soft lighting (sometimes hard) but directly above them casting shadow over the eyes from their brows. Hopefully this makes sense, if not, ask away. I'll help your grades!

PrincessLayup

Yeah that makes sense. So the paramount lighting has a harsher shadow and not directly above, and more modern versions of it have softer shadows that still look nice but also more expensive? And to get it to look less flattering you have the light at a higher angle.

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

Paramount will have contrast and give you the (I think it's called the butterfly lighting) and being that it's harsher with the shadows edges. more old movie like. If you want more of a cleaner beauty light, diffuse the light more basically. Interrogation look should we call it for ease, directly above the subject and harsher (no diffuser) will make it look more sinister plus stylised.

You said this was your favorite. I think the "Betrayed" trailer is going to blow your mind. :)

The Old Republic game takes place 3,643 years before episode 4, I hope you'll do the next one as well as the story in that one is just as impactful!
