The film named Helsreach, was created by the Canadian director "Richard Boylan". It is from the same novel written by "Aaron Dembski Bowden" and narrated by "Jonathan Keeble" in the audio book.

This has been on my list for so long and was asked by you amazing peeps way before I started doing the really long hangout format videos. After checking out the Astartes 2 trailer, I wanted some more Warhammer in my life and then I remembered Helsreach!

What also drew me to making this reaction was the fact I heard it was animated but not only that, every episode was animated in a different style. This intrigued me and so here we are...

I love this and i love the finale it chokes me up and im not even a Black Templar fan. I also love that Richard Boylan was hired by GW and he did one of the first official animations for GW, the Blood angels series and its follow ups, which like this has its own unique art style. Also the fact he did this all in Valves source engine from Half-life, which by the time he did this was already an aging game engine.

So Geneseed or its official name Progenoid Glands is basically how a Space reproduces. Every Space Marine has a pair of these organs, one implanted in the neck and another in the chest. The organs hormonally respond to the presence of the other Astartes gene-seed implants in the body by creating germ cells with DNA identical to that of those implants through a process very similar to cellular mitosis. These germ cells grow and are stored in the Progenoid organs, much like sperm cells or egg cells are stored in the testes and ovaries of normal men and women. When properly cultured by the Apothecaries of a Space Marine Chapter, these germ cells can be gestated into each of the 19 gene-seed organs needed to create a new Space Marine. Thus, for most Astartes, their Progenoid Glands represent the only form of reproduction they will ever know, though the DNA passed on will be that of their primarch, not their own. Mature Progenoid organs can be removed and new gene-seed implants artificially cultured from them. This is the only way new implants can be created, so a Chapter depends upon its existing Space Marines to create other Space Marines. Five standard years after implantation, the Progenoid Gland in the neck contains mature gene-seed and may be removed and its germ cells harvested, while the larger chest Progenoid is not considered ready for harvesting until 10 standard years have passed. The harvesting is normally done after an Astartes' death by an Apothecary. Salamanders have black ash skin with red eyes, due to their Primarch Vulkan having the same. Its due the Salamanders homeworld conditions and mutations in their geneseed. They are also the most human of the astartes and will defend them. Where as the Black Templars are proper combat zealots. They tend to look more down on humans compared to how this novel portrays them and have been known to abandon humans to achieve their goals. A princeps is the commander of a Titan, they are pretty much wired into the Titan and they merge with the Titans machine spirit, a sort of AI as AI in 40k is a big no no. The machines sort of souls. A princeps will often have to calm and tempter the machine spirit. They also have to be careful not to be lose themselves and become engulfed by the machine. This can happen if the machine is super angry. They can also reject the human as well. There is a story of this nearly happening with a Blood angel strikecruiser. The ship was damaged and lost its captain so the "first officer" tried take control and bond with the ship. The Ship's machine spirit was not having this and tried to reject her. But the "first officer" proved her worth and promised the ship revenge to which it then accepted her. The whole machine spirit in 40k is a complicated thing.

I think I read somewhere that the animation is like that at the beginning is basically fog of war. The closer Grimaldus and his group gets to battle the clearer his vision and the animation becomes.

So ive heard two reasons for the animation switches 1. Lore- Grimaldus is calmer and is more confident during battle. 2. The more plausible reason- Yes it changes as time goes on just bc he changed it but the camera stabilizes during combat to make sure the watcher can understand what they are seeing.

I think this was made in source filmmaker, I’m recognizing valve elements. The internal screens and control panels inside the titan, the eye textures on the human soldiers being the main things catching my attention in that regard.

I've said it previously when you did a poll and this was one of the selections, this book is what got me into 40K not knowing what everything was is a big shock but then I started looking up things and now 10 years later I have a addiction that costs WAY too much money XD. If you can I would highly suggest the book as somethings have been added and somethings have been removed. Such as during that docks scene in the book you find out that a mojority of the defenders are the dockworkers themselves waiting for the reinforcments of actual guard forces to get there. Theres a section where Stormherald is hit with the building Grimaldus and his squad drop in with jetpacks and look at statues of the primarchs and thats where that speach he did comes from. As you also stated during this whole thing that these people seem more human compared to other space marines or other sort of portrayals. This book shows how Grimaldus is being affected by the loss of his master, new responsibilities and what he thinks is a betrayal by Helbrecht himself and as he continues along the way and with each loss he experiences he regains who he was. If you can go read the book or even listen to the audio book, Jonathan Keeble does a fantastic job. You will not be disappointed!
