Ahhh MATE!

Here we go guys, holy Fish ‘N’ Chips… It’s time!

I have nothing to say except…

Play The Tape!

Kai

P.S. Oh yeah, the audio mix on this movie is a proper classic way of mixing.

Quiet in the dialogue to then scaring the shit out of you when the action takes place. My editor has gone with a middle approach here so hopefully the best of both worlds! Slightly elevated dialogues scenes and then we’ve capped the highs so it’s not blown out.

I no longer like to Audio duck it like streamers do. I want you to be able to hear the film and me. Sometimes it may get tangled up in the weeds there but I hope you’re happy. All I care about is your happiness and making your day a touch lighter.

I also like that you aren't audio ducking it as well :P I like to treat this as if i'm showing my buddy my favorite movies :)

Mr Sym

Absolutely perfect timing, just sat down for my lunch. Very excited to see your reaction to this!

And now you wait for Part Three like the rest of us, which is going to cover the Dune Messiah novel. A lot of people that read Dune (somehow) still thought that Paul was a hero at the end. Frank Herbert was frustrated by this and Messiah makes it blatantly clear that Paul is no hero. I think this movie makes that pretty clear though, especially since it changes Chani to be against Pauls drastic change. In the novel she's pretty ride or die. Also fun fact. Jessica was instructed to have a daughter - who would marry Feyd - but she defied them and had Paul instead. Sad that Mr Fraser wont be returning but with the trailer it looks like it's in good hands with the new guy.

My first experience of the Dune universe was Dune II Battle for Arrakis on the mega drive, it was an RTS, base building harvesting spice, fighting between the Atreides, Harkonnen, Emperor and game only House Ordos. Eventually read the books, even found out Iron Maiden (One of my fav bands) wrote a song about Dune, but were denied being allowed to name it after the franchise, it's called "To Tame a Land" and is a absolute banger. Can't wait for part 3 later this year.

"Send them to paradise" is so sad and tragic and so many people watching cheered it... Mainstream audiences are going to be shocked by 3.

When you said that 70% of the film is sound I couldn't not respond, as the worm approaches. (which sounds like they used a delta heavy rocket engine sample) TY for acknowledging the sound boys that you got here too! At what point did you get a gut feeling that this isnt going to be a hero's journey but the rise of something far far more dark. Steering the worm... Yes its explained in the books, skin under the scales is easily irritated and they use the hooks to open the scale to the sand, by varying the side that is lifted they steer like the bridle of a horse. Since you have not read the books, avoid the trailers or spoilers, there is some crazy stuff spoiled in the trailer. The year+ wait to see your reaction to Messiah is gonna be tough but I will do my best.

Alita

Looking forward to this one tonight, guess I'm buying snacks today!

I saw him like an anti-hero at the end of this one. My biggest shock is the lack there of Villain as they've bumped everyone off. I'm guessing someone will rise through the ranks and knows everything about Paul to push him to his limits. I look forward to covering it when it drops online. The fact you've seen a trailer and you're happy with it visually, puts me a ease a bit which is great.

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

The dark tones and his voice changing. I still get a hero vibe of him but only for the greater good type thing. A must do should we say or more anti-villain type thing. I have no idea where they're going to go but I don't feel like it's going to be a happy ending for our boy Paul.

The night is Dank and full of Memers

Stilgar's sudden "LISAN AL GA'IB!" after the duel with Feyd is so hilarious. Had the expression that his entire worldview was broken when he thought Paul lost, then instantly switched to "I told you all along see!" Hilarious delivery by the actor.

Ducard

I always wondered how they made the visuals on the Harkonnen homeworld. Now I know, with infrared. :-) I also still remember that shot of the worm coming through the dust, in cinema, with that sound. Holy moly goosebumps. It is an actual shame Greig Fraser did not win an Oscar for that movie. What I really like about the story is the moral conflict that is being fought between the MC and Chani. Deep inside you are a kind and good person but in order to survive you have to become the villian and bring chaos into order. Would you do that or would you stick to your moral principals? Btw is there a chance to get a reaction on the Dune 3 trailer now? It looks quite like a continuation of the second movie even with a different DP but you maybe see differences already.

Jake Signal Music

As he told Gurney about the vision billions lying dead.. "Because I gain control of it" about his power. The war that follows is skipped between books, but the body count is unimaginable.

The night is Dank and full of Memers

If you have a 4k Blu Ray Player with Dolby and HCX chip, Oled TV, and a good sound system or atmos headphones, this is a must have for physical media. Streaming compression absolutely kills the movies look.

Mr Sym

Just finished. Absolutely bloody loved it! Having seen the trailer for Dune 3, I do think we're in safe hands despite Greig Fraser not being a part of it. Some of the shots in it... chef's kiss.

Neko_Otaku_ Guy

On the steering of the worms, the hooks used by the Fremen, not only hold onto the worm but can pull on the flaps which cover those holes you saw, when pulled on, they open those flaps more causkng irritation to the worm, getting sand where its not wanted. The worm then turns in that direction to avoid getting sand in the holes as the flaps are usually closed when travelling beneath the sands. As for getting off the worms, I believe it was said that the worms eventually get tired, considering the Fremen use them to travel long distance, then the Fremen dismount before removing the hooks, allowing the worms to burrow again..I think.

Fercker

Not me pulling 10 bucks just to see this masterpiece again

JustUman

watching this movie in Imax was an absolute dream of an experience and wish i could watch it like that again

The night is Dank and full of Memers

Humans manipulate horses with far more intricate control than the Worms in Dune. Not far fetched at all. Animals avoid irritation, opening the skin flaps causes sand to fly in and irritate. It make them not want to go underground, and also makes them turn away from whatever side you make them feel more irritation on. That is why they show so many close ups of their scales/skin flaps being manipulated by the hooks. Same with horses, spurs, reigns.

The night is Dank and full of Memers

For those who didn't read the book and watched the SW prequels in disappointment as they came out, this movie was a bonus treat of "Chosen one fall to the dark side but written well."

The night is Dank and full of Memers

In case it was confusing during the finale. The throne room building and the city battle are 2 different locations. The Emperor's ship deploys that entire structure and army etc out of itself. The city where the Harkonnen vs Thanos battle is happening is the actual city on the planet.

Charl de Villiers

And so my watch begins! …wait no that sounds wrong

The night is Dank and full of Memers

"Lead them to Paradise." One of the saddest line's in any story. Crazy how many people still see Paul as the hero despite all 2 movies long him telling us what he knows will happen if he chooses that path (Billions dead across the Galaxy). Part III is going to be an absolute SHOCK for people not picking up what the first 2 films were showing us. Audience reaction is going to be funny.

The night is Dank and full of Memers

If some fellow watchers could maybe inform me. Is the not knowing names thing a running joke? Just something Kai has difficulty with? Is it "I'm too cool to take these sci-fi/W.E. names seriously" attitude? I totally understand not catching everything, many are said only a few times or once. But the word Harkonnen is probably in the script dozens of times, as is Atreides. Even in shows like Andor, 16 episodes in, not knowing most of the main character's name's strikes me as odd.

Reacher

It comes with the territory of what he does. As he's constantly explaining techniques and whatnot to us as the show/movie is playing, details can slip through as he's doing multiple things at once.

I was not expecting that HEIGH HOOO, my neighbours definitely knew I was entertained by the sound of my cackling... Been looking forward to this so much and you did not disappoint! As much as I love the score, my favourite scenes are the ones where the music takes a hike. Completely grabs you by the back of the head and makes you pay attention in a way that I wish more films did.

Catsushika

"Paul turned into something like a messiah" Dune book 2: Dune messiah. Means the movie is doing its job

DIO not Dio

44:41 this part in the theater went fcking crazy, goosebumps to the max

Chew Chew

Hi Kai, Do you plan on doing Dune: Prophecy??

scwyd

just got off work, sat down with food. lets fkn goooo.

Nj-Howey

can we expect a trailer reaction to dune part 3? i don't know if i should about what i know about part 3, don't want to give spoilers.

Skylar Ehler

I could watch Paul’s speech daily and still get goosebumps

Kale

My dad worked in the film industry and he is very similar to Kai in that regard. Whenever he watches something for the first time his instinct is to pay attention to the filmmaking techniques first and story/dialogue second. On second viewings he says he’s able to focus on story a lot more. Just comes with the territory I guess

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

It's also a me thing, I can watch stuff even on my own and I've watched 7 seasons of it and still not get the names right or know what it's called. Probably ADHD too. I had no idea what the girl was called in this for the post review, I literally googled it and even as I type this, I've forgotten it 😂 Chani I think it is.

Mr Sym

It's a show set 10,000 years before the story of Paul begins. Focused around the creation of the Bene Gesserit as you know it today. I've not seen it myself so can't really speak for the quality, but reviews seems to be generally positive towards it.

The night is Dank and full of Memers

Things slipping through the cracks is one thing. But being 16 episodes into a 24 episode story, not knowing most of the main characters names, or when the story is taking place, being told by your audience on every upload that BBY means the date it is taking place, acknowledge you've been told what it means, then say "babylon or something" is something else entirely. The script is the most important piece of any show or film. Every other aspect is in service of presenting the story from the script. There is only so many times you can say "teal and orange, 55k tickle, backlit, 45 degree, rear eye in focus, 6cs of storytelling, texture, foreground mayground background, wetdown look, actor does a good mouth open, they look like they smelled a fart" in an ongoing TV series reaction, before you aren't giving any new info, and you are letting the story you are supposed to be talking about slip you by.

Carlos

Great reaction mate! I wish you can do a quick reaction to the Dune 3 trailer to see a sneak peek of what’s to come and to see already some of the shots that Linus Sangren is doing. In my opinion, he’s definitely going to fill those shoes but I would love to hear your thoughts on the cinematography of it all!

Nj-Howey

an hbo show, season 2 is in production, i started watching but haven't finished yet.

n9krr

honestly mate i don’t have many friends but i see you as one of em love your content such a down to earth funny guy lol would love to have you in my life but then again, you basically are aren’t you?

BBROSE1234

Loved the reaction! I saw Dune Part Two opening day in Dolby and that entire sandworm riding sequence was otherworldly on the big screen. Steven Spielberg himself said it is one of the best sequences in a film that he has ever seen. It took them 44 days to shoot that 3 minute sequence due to Denis Villenueve wanting to use natural lighting and complex practical effects. Thats why I love both Dune films so much, because you can see the 1,000% effort everyone put into these films to make sure that every single frame is a work of art.

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

That's awesome to hear! You guys are my friends and the whole community is here for each other if they reach out. As I like to say, I'm hear when you want or need me. Much love n9krr.

1:57:15 Hahaha, well, it takes a lot more than that, but the movies deliberately don't go too much into the how and the why. You get some hints, but they chose to cut out part of the lore for the adaptation (good choice, maybe they'll come back to it in the third film). Plus, making it more mystical really adds to the experience, and it lets you play with the idea, just like you said. Part 2 ends with Paul's nightmare about to come true. He's becoming a manipulator, a monster, a traitor (hence Chani's reaction), and the Jihad is about to begin. Part 3 will likely show us the full extent of that nightmare. Or not. Honestly, I'm really curious to see how they'll do it. It's pretty much the hardest part to adapt.

Chris

You are correct that there is a time jump going into the next part of the story. Great instincts there. Trailer looks phenomenal visually so i wouldnt worry about the cinematography.
