I'm in your hands with this so please voice where you'd like me to start or think is best. I'm also going to need an All Cutscenes video too so pretty please🙏🏻 Link me once we've got a winner.

Lovely Jubbly X2!

Kai

P.S. I got this list from Google so 🤞🏻 I got them all. No NES games thank you.

The story technically starts with Snake Eater but the first was the first. There's a GameCube remake of the first that I can't see listed. It's called the Twin Snakes.

SidTheAstroSloth

Metal Gear Solid is the correct way to go. It's a PS1 game but it was also THE game that made video games more cinematic. I'm sure that will give it an even more interesting spin.

Alex Harris

I think it would be best to start with the PS1 version of Metal Gear Solid and not its remake, Twin Snakes for the GameCube. Yes, it is quite a bit uglier, but all of the camera techniques are there on day one.

The Dutch Dude

Been waiting a long time for this! Start from metal gear solid 1 and if you feel lost... welcome to the club!

Jellyman5k

That seems like a pretty solid order (release order, I mean). For MGS3, Delta is essentially a 1-to-1 recreation of the original Snake Eater, like that one Psycho remake. Good idea to watch that one last.

Creamy Bandit

Although MGS1 is probably a logical way to go. You'll have a unique opportunity to get the prequel story of snake eater (and freshly remastered) viewing it that way will fluff out the story for you and will likely grant a greater payoff once you get into the 'solid snake era'.

Chris Monica

Yeahh I also think it would be fun to start with metal gear solid for the ps1!

Knoh One

Portable Ops is missing but for the life of me I can't remember if it's important to the story or not

Dominic Lewis

This is my all-time favorite game series, and I can't wait for you to cover it. With that, I think it'd be better to follow it chronologically by story because there is so much packed into it that your head will spin trying to make sense of it. It's the same creator that makes the Death Stranding game, so imagine you started playing DS in the middle of the second game. I think for the sake of clarity and enjoyment, please start at the start of the story.

Lorey

Definitely MGS1! The gameplay and cinematics of it, coming out of 1998 was revolutionary!

Chris.N7

You'll be confused regardless. The story of these games is absolute nonsense at best. But Snake Eater is first timeline wise.

The Dutch Dude

Only problem is no boss fight gameplay included :/

Strags

The OG on PS1 may be an interesting exercise in seeing how graphics have improved over the course of a series. The Metal Gear series is an excellent example of that having had games in basically every generation of consoles.

Jonas B

The only two choices are either: 1. MGS1 (It's the start, every future story builds on top of it (EVEN the prequel (MGS3) expects you to somewhat know what happened in 1 and 2 on a meta level.) 2. MGS3/Delta. It's a prequel to the rest of the series, it's often considered the best game in the series, but if we're really planning to do the whole series, we should really go from the beginning, which would be MGS1.

Jonas B

It's not even canon according to Kojima.

Bionic Dreamer

Order of release, always. I’d might switch Snake Eater for Delta (Snake Eater Remake) because of the higher fidelity and doing both might be redundant. And definitely wait with MGS4 until the updated version releases later this summer.

Knoh One

I've played enough of the games to know not to argue with that madman, to hell with P ops then

VonEvil

The order you take depends on the first game you choose. If you start with mgs1, you should go in release order. If you choose 3/delta, then go chronologically (also Delta is a remake of 3, and I would definitely recommend it over the original)

LordKnoppers

"I'm still in a dream snake eater🎶". Metal Gear 1 and 2 on Konami MSX2 would technically count as well 😉 Music is such an important part of MGS so I hope which ever playthrough is chosen doesn't skip over the music at least for the Patreon upload. I also hope that the kick ass intro of Snake Eater is included too. Also ground zeros is a oneshot presentation four years before God of War 2018. I am not quite sure if Phantom Pain is too.

PeppaShrekky

Definitely go in release order, start with MGS1 and work your way through. Peacewalker is after MGS4 and is quite important to understand MGSV however the cutscenes are styled like comic strips, I'd still recommend it but just a word of warning. Very excited to see you react to my favourite series. I think you'll love it.

PeppaShrekky

Poops isn't that necessary tbh

Selph

Recommending anything other than the release order is straight up griefing. Too many spoilers. As for MGS3 Snake Eater vs. Delta, Snake Eater actually looks better from an atmospheric and artistic standpoint. The remake isn't Kojima's work, it loses a lot of the old spy flick charm and feels a bit tasteless (just like Twin Snakes).

Alexandre Isurugi

Please please please do it in release order, it's the order you're meant to experience the games and the whole point of the MGS series are the twists you get by playing them in release order, which you won't really get if played in chronological order. Just like you wouldn't watch a prequel of a movie before the original, it just doesn't make sense to me.
