You have no idea how hard I’m kicking myself for not playing this as a kid when it was available to me. How I could go back in time and play this when it was released. Have my mind blown by all the Hideo Kojima antics. Give me that push or head start should we say into cinema and what the cinematic image could look like when applied to games.

Then again, if you change anything you wouldn’t be where you are today. In this instant… Me experiencing this epic with you Legends and what I would say, one of my new favourite franchises ever!

Maybe it’s the nostalgia speaking or perhaps I’m becoming a Kojima Super Fan but I’m on a bit of a run with my old back log on the Steam Deck currently. I appreciate an older game, I really do. I’ve also recorded another older game this week. Another BIG franchise.

This today however, feels like I’ve been up in the loft, delved headfirst into some old retro gaming boxes and discovered what I would call, a legendary find! That gem, that jewel that’s always been there, under your feet only to be found by pure luck.

I owe all of you a massive thanks. 🙏🏻

Kai

I hope you keep up this momentum throughout the rest of the series

Ocelot

When you get to MGS 3 you should find a metal gear delta video. Exact same game, story, level design etc, just modern graphics

Creamy Bandit

Kojima is just getting started with you Kai. The rabbit hole is deep!

Ocelot

What's crazy is augmented soldiers is a very real thing, seriously considered by the US through DARPA and France, augmenting soldiers to enhance their stress, fear, mental ability, fatigue etc. military ethical units found that using implants or neurological microchips to control this only delayed and often worsened the effects of PTSD. Whilst France took a much more ethical approach, DARPA trialled alot more intrusively. Crazy thing is, this happened not long ago. There's full reports released in 2020 I believe. So Kojimas predictions of governments trying to make perfect soldiers is much closer to reality than first realised

PeppaShrekky

There is a 'bad' ending. This happens if Snake submits to Ocelot's torture. In that ending, Meryl dies and Snake escapes with Otacon instead. In that ending, it's revealed that Meryl is actually Campbell's daughter instead of his niece.

PeppaShrekky

I agree, I just hope he uses a good video for it. A lot of the bigger channels like GLP cut out quite a bit of the codec calls, don't have much gameplay, cut out the iconic intro and don't have "the climb"

PeppaShrekky

MGS1 definitely has the best cast of villains, FOXHOUND.

PeppaShrekky

Yes, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty will be your next game in the Metal Gear series

Justin Weatherman

This series goes places. Can’t wait to see you continue on with this!

Hyp3r-Tom

I dunno, MGS Delta is great don't get me wrong, but they aren't exactly the same and I feel like there's something to be said for watching Kojima's original vision first

Jonas B

I'm a happy lil guy seeing this. I hope you keep this sort of momentum moving forward with the series too! Cant wait for MGS2, hope it won't take too long! Either way me, and I'm sure many others are SUPER happy to hear and see you enjoying Metal Gear so much! It's peak.

Selph

To answer your question about codec calls, yup, that's just the editing. Even though there are some lengthy conversations, they’re way more spaced out when you're actually playing. It’s not the same as Death Stranding. I'd love a Hideo Kojima game without any exposition. Speaking of which, I thought of you while watching the animated film Angel's Egg (Tenshi no Tamago). No exposition, Akira-level animation, you're just dropped into the universe and grasp at straws to figure it out. Loved it. I figured you might be interested in it. And yeah, the double, triple, into sextuple crosses are hilarious, a big nod to old spy movies.

Neko_Otaku_ Guy

To confirm, that IS Ocelot talking at the end. Also the bandana Meryl shows Snake at the end is an Unlockable item. Every time you beat the game you would get something to use in sudsequent playthroughs, I think the first time was a Camera, another was the Stealth Camo and anothers was the Bandana which provided Infinite ammo while worn.

Cant wait for you to react to the cinematography leading up to MGS V. It really shows the growth of Kojima throughout the years.

LordKnoppers

Yeah I'd say the tripple AKA PS3 version should be chosen. It is more third-person-ish compared to the original release but it still has the banger presentation from start to finish. Delta is not bad, I dig the legacy mode to make it look and feel a little bit more like the older version. I think they managed to translate the character designs to a higher fidelity pretty good. But I love the original art style and character designs of MGS 3 snake eater more.

LordKnoppers

The second one has a "sneaky homage" referencing directly one of the most obvious inspirations for Solid Snake. Nevertheless, I dug both parts of this reaction. I am not one of the lore masters, but I remember some stuff from a Let's Play series I watched approx. 2015 before phantom pain released. It almost felt like it was yesterday while watching this on Patreon and thinking back.

Strags

I'm glad you liked it Kai. I totally agree with you that MGS1 was ahead of it's time as it totally was. As for what to look at next, there was a remake of MGS1 on the Nintendo Gamecube called Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes. Its MGS1 in the MGS2 engine and while it obviously plays better, people now have facial expressions and the cutscenes have lighting. Its pretty good and might be worth a look before you see MGS2.

Alex

Metal Gear?

AgentRedShirt

It would be fun just from a comparison sake to check out the GameCube version twin snakes. Story is the same. A lot of people friend on it because the voice actors were changed to bed and some of the stuff is a little wild, but they redid a lot of the cut scenes. Some of them are quite over the top, but it’s always fun to see a reimagining of an original.

AgentRedShirt

Do you wanna talk about a long cut scene. Wait till he gets to MGS4. There’s one that’s famously 45 minutes long or something like that. Actually, I think it was closer to 70 minutes. Because there were several cut scenes that played in sequence back to back near the ending as it was tying up everything. That’s like a movie to itself.

AgentRedShirt

I looked through and I didn’t see anybody mentioning it, but at the end when you are looking through the stinger, you do and you don’t have a choice. It ends the same way regardless, but if you try to fire, it doesn’t actually fire you just hear a snake keep repeating “no I can’t do it”. And then eventually the same thing happens.

Alexandre Bégin

Just a tad younger than you Kai and I played the demo of the 1st mission when it came out but the controls were too rough and I was just a bit too young to care or expect a story. Even then, it STILL with it's aesthetics alone caught my imagination to the point these types of games became my favorite for the rest of my life and, risking being as overly long winded as these general's death bed speech, predisposed me to love at first play Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell and all it's intrigue. Shame there are not much cut scenes in that game but give it a shot off-camera and let me know what you think

Stephen Rockford

Yasumi Matsuno’s Vagrant Story is a game very much cinematic like Kojima’s stuff. He and Kojima are friends and used to talk about game design together. vagrant story is his masterpiece.

Ruukasu97

yes, in metal gear one you kill big boss but it was just a body double also known as venom snake who is also the protag of metal gear solid 5 the phantom pain the latest and last title in the series, in metal gear 2 you kill the real big boss naked snake who is also the protag of metal gear solid 3 and metal gear sold 5 ground zeroes

Ruukasu97

the guy that talked to the president, Solidus Snake, in the end was ocelot
