What is going on!? Two NEW horror movies in one week, Hell must have frozen over. Not only that, they’re both blowing up and causing Hollywood traditional normies to have a major headache.

Is it perfect timing, luck or pure skill!? Not to mention, this is another YouTubers movie, Apple Crumble!

This movie was so interesting and it had me feeling like a kid, not in a loving way, more like shitting myself because I don’t like dark spaces and the VHS look, Chefs Kiss! Enough to make my pants look like a cappuccino… Heavens above that’s a lot of froth sir! No frother needed goodman.

3 questions…

  • Did I like it?

  • Did I love it?

  • Will it leave a lasting impression?

How about you play the literal VHS tape in the VCR and find out - “Play The Tape”.

Kai

P.S. Guys, please tell me what you thought of this movie and your favourite parts!

P.P.S If you’ve seen both this and Obsession, what movie did you like more and why?

I’ve been a fan of the Backrooms IP for years, from the directors original YouTube series, to video games that have been released over the years, and just the lore in general that the fans have sort of crafted. To see it come to life in a movie was so special. I took a flight across the country just to see it with all my friends, that’s how excited we all were for it. Definitely worth it, such a good time for all of us. We all loved it. Can’t wait to watch your reaction and see what you think, especially as a cold caller!

That's amazing fella! What memories you've made there. I think if you know the IP you'll get more out of it but as a cold caller, I thought it was brilliant however... You'll see.

Tesa

I love how this film looks visually thats definitely one of my favourite aspects of the movie

Cheshers

I love when you talk about the cameras/lenses used and what the effects are, it's very interesting 😊 I'd never think to look that stuff up myself before watching a film

To answer your questions, I liked the Backrooms better than Obsession. The themes and acting in Obsession were *chef's kiss*, but the Backrooms had me on the edge of my seat the whole time - could easily have watched another hour of it. They say found footage has been overdone in the horror genre, but those were my favourite parts of this film. I'd be very interested to hear your opinion on found footage as a technique, maybe even get a reaction sometime to films like Late Night With the Devil (2023) or Chronicle (2012).

I saw obsession in the cinema first and then this and I liked obsession a lot more on 1st watch. Interesting now after rewatching both i like the backrooms more!

Full Backrooms youtube series reaction when?

Grant Peters

I said the exact same thing as you whenever the monster was revealed. I remember turning to my friend and saying “Wasn’t really scary anymore once the monster was shown. The reason it was scary was because you DIDN’T know what it looked like.” What works so well with the Backrooms is the fear of the unknown, not knowing what is in there. It’s the anxiety, the mental strain it puts on you. Once the monster is revealed, it loses its fear, and I even found myself giggling in the cinema when the monster was on screen. Up until that moment the film was REALLY working for me. Once the monster was revealed, it lost its sauce for me. Still personally loved it though.

Great vid! Lore wise the backrooms really belongs to the internet, But this version (Kane parsons) Is considred his own cannon. Bit like public domain stuff. Truly fantastic movie. Loved it.

2:30 Thank you for the advice Kai. I've been working on a sci fi book and I have no idea if it'll be good but I want to share it with the world.

The Backrooms started off as a 4chan creepy pasta posted back in 2019. The director of the movie, Kane Parsons, started making videos portraying the Backrooms in early 2022, at the age of 16, catapulting his internet career. To date he has made 24 episodes all shot in the gorgeous VHS style using mainly Blender along with real life footage. What we saw in the movie using that handheld style is what he perfected during his years making these youtube videos. To think the movie was his directorial debut is quite bloody impressive.

I definitely prefer Obsession over this one for a few reasons. I adore the backrooms and Kane's work but I liked Obsession more. That doesn't mean I hated this tho. I would give this movie an 85% and Obsession a 98%. Obsession is just one of my favorite movies ever. This movie nails a lot but is a lot slower which hurts that score for me.

I know it's a meme at this point to mention, but Kane Parsons / Kane Pixels is only 21! An insane feat and one that is very inspiring to someone close to that age. How much you can do at such a young age is amazing. If you do watch the YouTube series, it's important to note he was only 16 when he started working on it!

I think if your favorite parts were the found footage, watching Kane Parson's Youtube series is totally worth it and I'd love to see you do so. For me, I watched Backrooms first and I've been a fan for years, so I was looking forward to it a lot. It's not what I expected them to do with it, and I will agree before the reveal the movie felt a lot stronger to me. I guess I'm glad that they waited so long to do so because the movie felt very tense until that point... I still loved it though! I love obsession as well but I think in many ways despite both being horror they are so different from one another that I don't know if I can compare them myself. But like I said, I'd be delighted to see a reaction of his series on Youtube from you, he has all the videos in a chronological playlist. Oh! Also, there's another exclusively YT series from Kane on his channel called 'The Oldest View' and it's a favorite I think you'd also enjoy. Very liminal horror like Backrooms, much less videos though... probably roughly movie length itself as well with all the videos put together. Thanks for your reaction! Love the thoughtfulness and your ability to breakdown exactly what made this movie so strong, as well as what didn't work for you. All of it is insightful!

Hey Kai so a few curiosities about Backrooms. The idea of a monster that resembles an alter ego of the player is purely for this movie. In the game you have different monsters for each scenario, some can go in packs, have different abilities and ways to counter them, etc. In the Backrooms game right now you have your normal first person view, but now because of the movie you also have that handheld film grain look from the start of the movie, and let me tell you that playing with that view is scary as fuck. For the pirate monster it was actually done by a basketball player called Robert Bobroczkyi, who was very tall, and the rest of it was makeup and special effects. And he also did the monster in Alien: Romulus, so maybe its worth checking that one out too. And Kane Parsons knows his thing about games, and he is a huge fan of Portal and Half Life, which he said it influenced his view on this concept of "going out of bounds" and all of that. And that he would be interested in directing a movie about any of those games. I dig that a lot. Also as a curiosity in general, its said that now Hollywood producers are searching in platforms like reddit for stories that could be converted to movies, seeing how recent films have been doing pretty well with those. I would reccomend them to search for indie games more than reddit stories, but its a start

Ah yeah the MJ movie, cant remember if it is part of the "Moonwalker"-movie or not, but the music video for "Speed Demon" is re-donk-ulously wacky. Great song though 🙂

Well I watched this one and Obsession back to back. I preferred Obsession overall, just felt like it held itself together more throughout. This one started strong, that opening 'lost footage' part had my 'fight or flight' response primed, but as the film went on it really seemed to fizzle out - I think I would have preferred there be no full reveal, it almost cheapened the experience for me.

Hey Kai, you seem to love the "VHS Horror" and "Found Footage" vibes from this. So id recommend two YouTube webseries. You should react to the original backrooms foundfootage, and my personal recommendation, The Mandela Catalog. As someone who gets very scared by VHS horror, the Mandela Catalog has actually given me nightmares and unlocked new fears lol.

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

It literally felt like I was reading my internal thoughts there fella. Beautifully put. I felt the same. I don't mind a reveal but I think something outer worldly or ghostly would have been better for me. Different footwear for different people I guess 💪🏻👍🏻

idobegaysometimes

I believe the VHS intro scene is all made in Blender, which is insane!

Anthony Lazarin

If you liked the found footage parts of this movie you would like the series because that’s mostly how the series is.

Kain D. Zero

Maybe I am not in the right mood for this right now but this feels boring to me. I've got to give this another try another time.
