Like the title states, I can’t handle this writing. The teasing, the messing of my head, the slaps of fiction, the slaps of truth across my face and let’s not forget, the smashing of a blunt object over my cranium.

Just when I think I’ve got it, Kojima masterfully pulls a 180 on me and whips out the rug from my feet. I F’N LOVE IT!

The reason I love it is because it’s “grounded in the world that exists here”. I really like Death Stranding but even I don’t think Kojima knew what was beyond the pages when writing and I don’t personally like that. I like my writers to know every bloody inch of their world, even if they make it up on the spot! If you’re a creative and caught of guard, you’ll know exactly what that means or how it feels in that moment of time.

I love the nod to my GUYVER here too with the high frequency blades however, I get a bit cross when Google states it was a Kojima production idea. NO IT WASN’T! This is in the post review watch if you’re wondering where that moment is.

Regardless… I am fan of this franchise. To be honest with you, I LOVE this franchise even though I’ve not actually played it. I really like the world; I love the characters and I really like the cinematic movie theming captured and wrapped in between the pages.

Like I mention in the post review watch, this really is a Game Movie Hybrid…But it isn’t perfect, granted nothing is but I go further into this and what causes the cracks to show. If you know Kojima and you’ve been following the channel long enough. You could probably give me the correct answer now.

Go on, ask yourself. What is the problem with Kojima’s writing when applied to Video Games? It’s a bit like a dissertation/thesis question you get at university. To be honest with you, it would make for a great paper.

All I know is… I need me some more of this franchise and we’ve got plenty to go!

Together, You and I… Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

I'm so pumped for the upcoming games, LETS FUCKING GOOOO

PeppaShrekky

Getting on my flight in 30 minutes, this is perfect timing

Not watched yet as I'm at work. But my guess to your question regarding Kojimas writing is trying to mix alot of genres into one?

PeppaShrekky

Very excited for Snake Eater too, probably the best one imo

Tomas Z

Can't wait for Snake Eater! Best game in the series with one of the best female characters ever created in fiction.

Snk444

Will watch this after work ! Can't wait for Snake Eater ! A big part of the character and soul of Metal Gear are all the optional Codec calls and all the crazy ways you can interact with the game world (something that sadly you cannot experience without playing) , but it's nice to see that you are enjoying this series nonetheless!

HillBillyPhilly

Mask of Zorrow shout out. Was my favourite film as a kid!

Alex

Now you see that Kojima predicted the age of AI and digital censorship 25 years ago

HillBillyPhilly

I used to watch it regularly while running around the living room with my mums tights on my head! 🤣 I also think Catherine Zeta Jones was my first crush!

MGS2 sure is a wild ride, huh? The entire second half of the game was truly so ahead of it's time with all this Digital Information Control and AI stuff. There truly is nothing else like a Kojima game and I'm so damn jealous that you're getting to experience it for the first time! A lot of people swear by MGS3 calling it the best one/their personal favorite, so... please be excited! I know I am! And yes, you're right. No aliens lol. The AI did, in fact, mean that they were formed over 200 years of american culture, morals and history.

Michael Fanning

Kojima is a genius, predicting how it is today, people railing against AI and digital censorship, with the owners of the panopticon we inhabit telling us 'it's for your own safety, we have your interests at heart' etc. The man is a visionary.

ERIK

Btw, Raiden's history of being a child soldier is depicted in a semi-realistic fashion. Child soldiers are often drugged with the aim of making them more obedient, as well as the image training is done to desensitise the kids to killing. There's a drug called Brown-Brown which consists of cocaine or amphetamines mixed with smokeless gunpowder which is given to the kids to snort, to rub into their wounds, or mixed with their rations to consume.

Jellyman5k

I read a book about this in high school, really sad stuff. Like imagine showing G.I. Joe to little Johnny next door and sending him off to fight.

ERIK

Well, first you'd have to drug him so he wouldn't panic. But yeah, it's tragic. And if you're lucky enough to survive it, the PTSD affects undeveloped brains much more severely than a full-grown adult's

I very much agree with your final thoughts. Kojima doesn't live by the "show, don't tell"-mantra, that's for sure. It's a bit of a shame, really, because games - as with movies - don't have to rely that much on direct exposition. His info dumps can be interesting, but oh boy, do they test your patience. More breadcrumbs, less loaves of bread. At times it also becomes a bit too self-indulgent. I.e. explaining how the characters are named after WW2 codenames for fighter planes. There's already so much going on during those last few scenes. It feels like it's more of a "people, you won't believe how clever I am, so lemme just spell it out for you!" I would categorize that type of info as an easter egg, and would rather have players/viewers figure that out on their own. "Fluff", as you called it. Criticisms aside, I do think MGS2 is one of his best games. It's a complete experience. It also contains so many firsts that other game devs have since copied. It really pushed the envelope, both in terms of themes, narrative, graphics, directing and gameplay. Looking forward to your next visit to the world of Kojima.

Fission Mailed I love the nod to the infinite ammo bandana, from the first game. Also, I think you'll be surprised at who we are in MGS 3 Snake Eater.

Kojima really pulled out the time machine when he wrote the script for MGS2. Not only did he forsee the state of the internet and AI 25 years after the game released, but the finale for the game was a terrorist incident in Manhattan, New York. There was actually cut content due to the 9/11 attacks which happened 2 months before the game released.

Volfur

For a game made in 2000-2001 it was very ahead of its time, It certainly has flaws specially all the camera choices ,dialogue and information dump at the end but that early in the life of 3d video games it kinda gets a free pass so to speak, Trial and error was expected.

Ruben Jacobs

Rose was mentioned a couple of times in Metal Gear Rising, they're still together. Though I would say her role in the game isn't nearly as big as it ought to have been.

PeppaShrekky

Near the end of the game, when Arsenal Gear crashes into Manhattan, there was actually supposed to be a cutscene showing the crash. You'd see the Statue of Liberty and other buildings being knocked down. However, the game was releasing in late 2001. And this was obviously when the 9/11 attacks happened. So that portion game had to be altered and changed, which is why it immediately cuts to Raiden and Solidus above Federal Hall. Kojima was anticipating that the game would be cancelled. Someone on YouTube recently recreated that cutscene.

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

My immediate reaction is then why did he turn more robotic? Did he have to or did he choose to. Watching it now I guess I'd absolutely love it.

ERIK

I think I see what you mean about what Kojima's problem is. His games, although overall well written, leave a heavy back-end that needs to be explained before the game is over. Which leads to this over-exposition at the ending, which I personally don't mind but they can be a drag.

ERIK

He was originally a novelist actually, he got into video games of course in the late 80s thanks to Mario and some other notable Japanese point-and-click adventure game. He saw the potential video games had and since it wasn't a very well established business back then, a lot of people from different paths who wanted to make it in the arts got into video games. He especially explores that connection between the player and the story in one of the later entries in the series.

Justin Weatherman

YEEEESSSSS! …Let’s go, lol. Been waiting on this one. This whole series is so fun.

Great watchthrough, some more nuggies for ya: - The dogtags at the end are another bit of meta commentary. At the start of the game (after the prologue I think, when you are Raiden rather than Snake), the player makes dogtags and enters their name, Raiden then wears the dog tags. So Raiden throwing them away is like he's free of control, including that of the player. - You can actually see Vamp in the ending street cutscene, but only using a special 'documentary mode' in the game that lets you rewatch cutscenes whilst playing with the camera, zooming in etc. It ain't much but you can see it here (you also got a trophy for it): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKE_sZ4QBUI - You can read loads online about Kojimas thinking behind changing the protagonist and messing with the fans. Basically he wanted to play with expectations and tie it into the larger narrative (the whole Big Shell being a re-run of Shadow Moses etc, themes of fate etc). - I took the S3 AI stuff from the white house to be an AI that grew out of all the tech there that then ended up manipulating events. It's all very silly but Kojima gets a lot of credit for foreshadowing the core ideas about information manipulation, censorship and what could come from an unregulated internet. Looking forward to MGS3, it's probably the best of the series for me. I think original is probably the way to go rather than remake, they mess with the original character designs a little too much in remake imo, but it does look pretty. Be warned that if you thought MGS2 had a lot of expo dumps and cutscenes MGS4 is insane in that regard (and got a lot of flack for it). I remember reaching what I thought was the 'end' of MGS2 at like 1am and didn't get finished until like 4 or 5am due to the never ending expo dump and the boss fight! Cheers!

What kind of digital censorship are we talking about? x) Kojima was talking about the death of filtered/editorialized information. In the digital age, everyone can broadcast their opinion, and everyone's take is put on the exact same level. Scientific studies are being contested by fucking piss-drinking influencers, and the opinion of some random guy who remembers a hot day 50 years ago is put on par with actual climate scientists. Now even AI models are being poisoned by random bullshit takes on Reddit. We are literally in an information Dark Age. The Colonel's monologue is terrifyingly accurate.

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

I've already decided to stick with the original and then a bit later I'll cover the remake. I think it's important to cover both.

Jason Gentry

Welcome to Kojima maschoscism. We all end up hating and loving the length of his cutscenes and exposition. Its just so good.

Alexandre Bégin

Snake Eater is the best MGS storyline in the series and what an OST!!! Be sure not to jump to MGS 4 right away after MSG 3 since there is a sneaky canon game on PSP "Peace Walker" and even if that was released 2 years later (with an HD version on ps3/xbox360 that might be better for the eyes) the MSG 4 is the Finale of the series.. yes there are 2 MSG 5 after that but hey, Kojima..

Ruukasu97

i was confused so i looked it up, the rose youve been talking to over the codes was the real rose for almost the whole game, after she revealed that she was pregnant that was when they switched the real for the ai

Carl Weatherford

lol cant wait for mgs 4, the game/movie that was to much even for the fans
