What an intro. This had me hooked the moment we got off the plane (side note, that reminded me about Disney’s Planes!) and then they slap us with a voice acting LEGEND!

With every GTA game we’re going further and further back in time so we have to approach this with real expectations when it comes to those filmmaking techniques however… We covered a 1998 game recently and I couldn’t believe what they were doing with those “filmmaking techniques” so who knows what we’re going to get in this video series. All I know is it’s going to be one outlandish adventure!

Boyz n the Hood - GTA style here we come.

P.S. If you want us to cover Disney’s Planes, let me know!

seems like this recording uses quite a few mods. I can tell it's the original PC version of the game, but the first thing I noticed is that the police car model from the intro is definitely not the one from the base game. some of the cars also have reflections when they shouldn't. The grass also looks a bit weird. It's not too far from the original, but it's definitely been changed a bit.

One of the first games I ever played and I was bloody 7 years old I think

Keep these things in mind while watching * 🗓️ Setting: San Andreas takes place in 1992, which is why you’re seeing the early-’90s West Coast culture, fashion, music, cars and gang culture. * 🌴 Where is this compared to GTA V? The Los Santos you’re seeing is the same fictional city concept used in GTA V. GTA V revisits the state of San Andreas, but Rockstar completely rebuilt Los Santos and the surrounding world for the HD era. So think of this as the PS2-era version of the same place. * 🗺️ It’s WAY bigger than Los Santos: The original San Andreas eventually gives you Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas, representing Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas, plus huge rural, mountain and desert areas. * 🎮 Ahead of its time: Remember this was 2004. CJ could gain/lose weight and muscle, change hairstyles and clothes, get tattoos, learn fighting styles, improve weapon/driving skills, swim, dive, date, recruit gang members, capture territories, modify cars, attend driving/flying schools, gamble, play sports and much more. A lot of later GTA games borrowed individual ideas, but never completely recreated that entire combination. * 🧬 You can see GTA V’s DNA here: Character abilities, vehicle customization, swimming, diverse activities, multiple regions and the idea of giving the protagonist different abilities all have roots or early versions in San Andreas. * 🎙️ CJ & Franklin connection: Young Maylay, CJ’s voice actor, is the cousin of Shawn Fonteno, who later played Franklin in GTA V. Fonteno even appeared as a Grove Street gang member in San Andreas. That’s a pretty cool connection considering CJ and Franklin are arguably two of the most important protagonists in the franchise’s Los Santos stories. * 🎤 The voice cast was stacked: Big Smoke is voiced by Clifton Powell, Ryder by rapper MC Eiht, Sweet by Faizon Love, and Officer Tenpenny by Samuel L. Jackson, Charlie Murphy voiced Jizzy B, etc. So a lot of the voices you’re hearing came from established actors and musicians. * 🚀 The crazy part: San Andreas still has things that GTA IV and V never completely duplicated — especially the combination of CJ’s physical progression, RPG-like stats, gang territory system, recruitment, three cities, schools and sheer variety of activities. That’s why it’s worth looking at San Andreas less as “an old GTA game” and more as Rockstar going absolutely crazy with ideas in 2004 that later games selectively built upon. * 🎮 This version is the original, no definitive edition

* 🤠 San Andreas helped establish Rockstar’s “living world” philosophy: San Andreas wasn’t just about completing missions; you could stop and do side jobs, gamble, exercise, customize CJ, hunt for collectibles, explore, etc. That philosophy became much more sophisticated in Red Dead Redemption, where Rockstar deliberately built a world full of things happening outside the main story. Rockstar developers have specifically said their experience making GTA’s open worlds helped inform Red Dead Redemption. * 🌲 The countryside in San Andreas was important: Rockstar was experimenting with making the areas between cities interesting rather than simply empty space. San Andreas introduced mountains, forests and deserts to GTA, and the developers wanted players to be able to stop almost anywhere and discover something. That idea became a huge part of Red Dead Redemption, where the wilderness itself became part of the gameplay rather than just something you drive through. * 🦌 This eventually evolved into Red Dead’s wildlife ecosystem: San Andreas had animals and rural environments, but Red Dead Redemption took that concept dramatically further. Animals actually behave like part of an ecosystem, can hunt each other, attack you, be hunted and skinned, and provide resources. Rockstar specifically described creating the ecosystem because they needed the enormous open spaces to feel alive. * 🎲 The side activities evolved too: San Andreas had gambling, dating, sports, schools, side jobs and random things to discover. Red Dead Redemption expanded that philosophy with hunting, gambling, bounty hunting, challenges, strangers and random encounters that could happen while you’re simply traveling through the world. * ⚖️ San Andreas experimented with consequences; Red Dead perfected it: San Andreas already had the idea that CJ’s behavior and relationships could affect the world, but Red Dead Redemption turned morality into a central system with Honor and Fame. Helping people, committing crimes or killing innocents could actually change how the world treated John Marston. * 🌎 The biggest evolution is the “random encounter” philosophy: San Andreas could surprise you with things happening around the map, but Red Dead Redemption made that much more dynamic. You could be riding along and suddenly encounter an ambush, kidnapping, robbery, execution, animal attack or stranger needing help — and you could intervene or simply keep riding. Rockstar described this random-event system as one of the major breakthroughs of the open world. * 🚨 So San Andreas is almost a prototype for some of Rockstar’s later design philosophy: GTA San Andreas asked, “What if the open world itself could be something you live in?” Red Dead Redemption took that idea and asked, “What if the world could actually feel alive without needing the player to constantly trigger missions?” Then Red Dead Redemption 2 pushed that philosophy even further with hunting, wildlife, NPC routines, camp life, random encounters, environmental interactions and an even more reactive world.

🎬 Movie Inspirations for GTA San Andreas: * 🎥 Boyz n the Hood (1991): Probably the biggest influence on the Los Santos/Grove Street portion. CJ’s return home, neighborhood life, gang tensions and the relationship between family and street life all echo the movie. Rockstar specifically cited it as an influence. * 🔥 Menace II Society (1993): This is arguably the most obvious one. Rockstar’s Dan Houser said the opening of San Andreas was heavily derived from Menace II Society and Boyz n the Hood. The gang atmosphere, cars, neighborhoods and certain scenes/character archetypes are heavily reminiscent of it. Even cooler, MC Eiht, who played A-Wax in Menace II Society, voices Ryder in San Andreas. * 🚔 Colors (1988): Helped inspire the gang-war and corrupt-police/C.R.A.S.H. side of the Los Santos story. The movie deals heavily with LAPD officers dealing with rival street gangs, which fits the world Rockstar was recreating. * 🎰 Casino (1995): When you eventually reach Las Venturas, the inspiration shifts dramatically. The casinos, mobsters and Las Vegas atmosphere draw heavily from Casino. * 🚗 Bullitt (1968): The San Fierro section has a famous driving sequence inspired by the legendary San Francisco car chase from Bullitt. So when you get to that part, it’s worth paying attention to the chase itself. * 🏍️ Easy Rider (1969): The character The Truth, voiced by Peter Fonda, is essentially a playful reference to Fonda’s counterculture biker image from Easy Rider. * 💥 Terminator 2, Con Air, Pulp Fiction and others: Rockstar also borrowed or parodied specific scenes and ideas from these movies. So some of the ridiculous action sequences aren’t random — they’re Rockstar basically turning famous movie moments into GTA missions.

After you finish this gta, you should see Gta San Andreas The Introduction, it's a short clip that tells you what happens in the game, the story before the main game

Now that he's doing GTA, I gotta see him do Saint's Row

I think it'd be awesome if you also reacted to Rockstar's Max Payne games 1, 2, and 3.

Catalina, Cesars cousin is the Antagonist of GTA 3. Keep any eye out for a familiar face 😉

Justin Weatherman

Yeah, I mean, 3 would be pretty good. The others are... okay.

NoFaceKayden

Agreed, I say just 1 - 3 would be the best

Justin Weatherman

Understatement I’d say. There are so many mods, it’s a little weird. Definitely throws off the vibe a bit, but not the worst I guess.

Justin Weatherman

A couple notes: The cop with the teeth is voiced by Chris Penn. There’s a long list of high-profile voice actors in this game. The real car brands unfortunately are a mod, and were not in the original game. Some questionable mods here, a little distracting, but not too bad. Maybe look up some photos of the original character art to have a reference vs. the nightmare fuel in this modded version, lol. Glad you’re doing this game. One of the all-time greats. The hype of Vice City and San Andreas releasing at the time was so crazy. The best of gaming times back then for sure.

Ps2 San Andreas is just so much better for a cinematic feel it’s unfortunate they never replicated it on any in subsequent version

Do you know what GTA 3, vice city & san andreas have in common with Canon? The engine those games are based on is the RenderWare engine made by Criterion Software who were originally part of Canon. While being at Canon, Criterion Software created a division called Criterion Games. That Criterion Games that made, among other titles, the Burnout games (the first one was actually very similar to Thrill Drive from Konami). Criterion Games licensed out RenderWare and an entire era of games is built on RenderWare, from bad to mid to GTA 3, vice city & san andreas. And then EA bought Criterion and RenderWare was cast aside eventually. For GTA 4 Rockstar could not utilize RenderWare anymore so they turned to Angel Studios (Rockstar San Diego), famous for Midnight Club, and tasked them to create technology based on their Angel Engine which is RAGE. The first game to release based on RAGE was "Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis". It's a broad overview and there is more detail in between the bullet points of course, also feel free to correct me if I'm wrong :-)

That quadruple A thing was a laughable marketing attempt by Ubisoft that was then mocked and made into a meme, there is no such thing as AAAA
