What do you think of my personalised Cog Tag in the intro? Pretty cool eh… You could even say “NICE!”

In the title, it really does say a must buy game, for me! I love this. I’ve played now up until we cut off in the game which is very rare for me on this channel as normally, I wait until we’ve finished. I couldn’t!

I needed this!

The gameplay is utterly brilliant and so much fun, again like I mention in the intro, it feels so God damn good!

What makes this game for me is the intro. It felt like a horror and tapped into the genre beautifully. The lighting really makes this game pop and my gameplay looked so much better than this video. I crushed my blacks ever so slightly to amplify the gore and boy, does it do it.

You know what else helps, 70% of the picture is F’N sound! Cheffs kiss, they nailed it.

Another area that the developers have nailed and I’ll be honest, they’ve nailed so much in this game that they could definitely nail the coffin shut. That is the cinematics and more importantly, the ability to convey an emotion. The famous… Evoke an emotion and they achieved this by doing what other game developers are scared off. The ECU, Extreme Close Up!

I bloody love this game so far and even though today, I’ve heard people moaning about flags, being woke, boss ladies, grenades falling through water. The guy playing it should know, he literally looked like a Magikarp. Even if the grenade made an actual splash, the silly cu*t wouldn’t see it 😂.

F them… Enjoy your time, the game and let the noise pass you buy. If you don’t like the game, move on to another in your back log. Games are certainly popping at the moment.

Can’t wait for Part 2 and even more than normal so I can continue my very own playthrough.

Play The Tape!

Kai

P.S. Yes, this is the perfect start to kick off Spooktober.

Unreal game mate, takes me back to the 360 days. The technical team are incredible, every single Gears of War game has been an absolute astonishing marvel on their native platform. Currently logged about 80 hours, did 100% Insane for the a certain skin.

Ocelot

Looking forward to this, I've heard some bad things about this game, even from some long time fans. Since I won't be playing, as I don't have Xbox, I'll enjoy the show here

AgentRedShirt

I’m still playing through this. It’s been getting a lot of hate for whatever reason but from what I’ve seen it’s very enjoyable. It’s very reminiscent at least of the original. Couple things of note on a technical side it uses the upgraded version of UE5. So a ray traced compatible or capable graphics card is required for playing it on PC. Their use of the megalights and mega Geometry is next level.

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

I play it on max graphics, ludicrous I think it's called across the board. I have a 5090 though and yeah... AMAZING! With the cans on my head... A WET DREAM!

AgentRedShirt

Yeah, the same. Except I can’t quite handle Ludacris without serious amounts of upscaling so I knocked it down to the one right below which I believe is ultimate. Ludacris is for the super rich 5090s. That’s kind of that detail level was created for. I’m envious. I have a lowly 5070 TI.

I haven't even watched the video yet, just read your post, and this has already made my day :) I was fortunate enough to work on this game, and I found your channel from your reaction to the original teaser, and I've been hooked watching you since then!! I'm a tech artist, but have always been stronger on the programming side of things than creatively, your breakdowns are so well done, I always feel like I learn a lot! Anyway, so happy you like the game, now off to watch your videos :P

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

Thank you fella for being apart of the community. I read your feedback message a little while ago regarding a breakdown for the Trailer. I don't know how I missed that trailer. Maybe I could still do it! Thank you for working on this amazing game. Even if it was a small role, without you, it wouldn't be where it is today. Are you a freelancer or do you work at the Coalition?

geoffeep

I think you'd love the Adagio trailer! It does use all in engine content, but is more explicitly an ad promo thing so more of a tone setting thing :) Thanks right back at you!! I've loved working on the game, but it does get pretty exhausting with such a long project, and content like yours gave me some extra life! I'm full time at TC, have been around there for about ten years now!! Such a fantastic team, I'm very lucky.

Chris.N7

You don't find out the origin of the Locust until Gears 5 I believe.

Ever

Non-buynary for me. I won't be supporting forced DEI politics in games. Started in 4, progressed in 5, now here we are, a forced humiliation ritual towards white males 🫠. Shame as I'm sure there is some great people at coalition just wanting to make a good game however they have no say in the madness. I expect Asha to nuke this studio too, good riddance. Least Eastern devs still make good games, and there is plenty more great games for this year and early 2027 to look forward too.

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

Can you tell me where it's forced as I've not felt or seen anything in the writing? Have you played the game then?

I've been with Gears since the first game. GoW 1 is literally the game that made me switch from being a PC guy to a console guy, and I stayed there through GoW 3 before eventually moving back to PC. So hearing people call E-Day a bad Gears game is honestly ridiculous to me. You can dislike individual things about it, sure, but this is the first Gears since 3 that actually feels like proper Gears again. The atmosphere, combat, brutality, Locust, Marcus and Dom, all of it feels closer to the original trilogy than 4 or 5 ever did. And my problem with 4 and 5 was never even really the new cast. JD, Kait and Del were fine. Not amazing, but definitely not terrible, and we still had some of the old cast around. My problem was that the story ranged from mediocre to just plain bad and never had the same weight, momentum or sense of direction as the original trilogy. Also, offscreening certain characters was complete bullshit. E-Day is the opposite. It actually understands what made Gears feel like Gears. Calling it a bad game in general is even harder for me to understand. Obviously it's not going to hit the same narrative heights as GoW 3, because 3 was the payoff to an entire trilogy with two previous games building its characters, relationships and story. E-Day doesn't have that luxury, so I don't think that's even a fair standard to hold it to. My one real narrative complaint is Dom. Mags is good, but narratively Dom should be filling the role she fills. This is Marcus and Dom during E-Day. Their relationship should be one of the absolute central pillars of the story, so giving so much of that narrative space to another character feels like a missed opportunity. And sure, I've seen people point to some dumb woke cosmetic/emblem stuff, fine, whatever. But who actually gives a shit? It's not like they plastered it all over the game world or replaced COG flags with it. It's optional cosmetic crap that most people will probably never even use. If that's the thing you have to reach for to argue that E-Day is somehow a bad Gears game, then the argument is already pretty weak. All of it just makes me wonder what people actually think Gears is supposed to be.

Zarosio

And even then, it contradicts the books that were previously written.

Zarosio

Most people can only point to banners in multi-player. There are almost as many different pride flags as there are national flags. Honestly, it's kinda insane how many there.

Ever

I've watched through it, but not played, and don't intend to. Every female in the game is in a leadership role, talking down to men, or just pictured as being the "heroes" in the story.... the "MAIN" characters Marcus and Dom are relegated to being background or side characters in their own game. The villan is a white man, the "big bad", and you better believe the girl boss captain is the one who confronts him. The team is full of trans and LGBT+ activists pushing representation, the lead technical director has even said as such. This is not the only game that has been affected, female representation gets uglier across the board for western devs ie, Gears , Halo (cortana), fable (literally any character), horizon (forbidden west) lord there is a lot, and that is not the be all end all, but there is a pattern or repetitive design choices in the western industry. Compare this Gears to Gears 1-3 Anya, and the Auzzie were compassionate, strong, attractive, and capable, they also didn't look like bullfog masculine dykes, they fit into the universe, they HAD to fight, it serviced the story. These dev teams are now ran by LGBT activists in the western world. DEI is more important than telling a good story.... dragon age veilguard is another good eg, a fantasy game with magic, yet the devs force pronouns, top scars & a character whos sole identity is "I'm trans" into a FANTASY GAME. People play games as escspism, but now you can't touch one without being reminded about politics and agendas. If LGBT flags "don't matter" then why do any flags matter? Why can't we have "don't tread on me" flags? Or confederate flags? It's because the left makes it, the left doesn't want it. Coalition cared more about ramming flags into a game than actually developing the multilayer... no chainsaw duels, no leaderboards, no human Shields, thus is a clear indicator of where priorities lay. And Mags, from Gears E-Day, she's blind, gay, has asthma/,rust lung, has trauma Is not conventionally attractive, is ethnic, yes still steals the show, it's the victim Olympics. All of this onto of how many girl bosses run the show really does take you out of the game, in NO way would mags even be allowed in service, nor would women be in positions of power, War is a man's game, always has been, that's not to say women can't compete but it's unrealistically portrayed and biased as hell in E-day. I need to state, I do not hate or even care that trans people or gay people exist, power to them they can live their life how they want, however where are my characters telling the audience how straight they are? Where are my straight pride flags? It's forced as as the story revolves around these characters, they don't just happen to be in a circumstance, in what world would a big dyke woman with attitude ever make captain when the military is run by men? Absolutely none. Compare this to any Eastern game, capcom for example Sexuallity never mentioned as it doesn't matter, their character are terrific, face models are attractive, characters are attractive with little to no change from the face scans. All Eastern devs care about is making a damn good story, with good gameplay to support that. Anything out of china can be used as an example. Men don't like butch ugly dykes with attitude, women don't like butch ugly dykes with attitude. Gears is a shooter game for guys, you blow sh** up being buff manly Chad's. THAT should be front and centre, it's why the first 3 were successful, but now what is front and centre? Someone's queer identity, their trauma, and girlbosses conducting a humiliation ritual at men. Wolverine was the same, trauma, ugly characters everywhere, even superheroes who SHOULD be exceptional and larger than life got hit with the ugly stick. They have always been sexy, strong, over the top and larger than life, but wolverine said nah, male gaze bad.... if you want to see successful designs, look at cosplay, I guarantee Gears 1-3 girls has cosplay, you won't find anyone cosplsying as mags or the dyke captain. It's been a fatiguing pattern for a long time now, western games ram politics at the forefront. There is no escapism to be found as the are leftist companies, GTA6 will be next. Anyway, I'm more than happy to stick to eastern devs who care more about making fun games, with a good stories than lecturing me on being a terrible human because I was born a white make. These self Inserts do NOT contribute to a good story. If anyone read all this God damn I salute you, I just want my good activism free games back man.

oLaudix

Sorry m8 but I honestly think you're taking a couple of legitimate criticisms and then stretching them into an argument that the entire game revolves around DEI, and that just doesn't match the game I actually played. The one criticism I absolutely agree with is Mags. She is too prominent in certain parts of the story. Not because she's a woman, gay, sick, etc., but because some of the narrative jobs she gets should belong to Dom. When Marcus gets picked up, when someone is explaining what they should do next, when somebody is acting as his emotional support or grounding influence, that's where Dom should be getting more material. This is supposed to be a Marcus and Dom game and their relationship should be front and centre. Her actual character arc is completely ordinary Gears stuff. She lost people, left or got discharged from service, ended up working in horrible conditions and got sick from it. That's not some revolutionary political storyline. It's actually pretty damn cliché. I also genuinely don't understand the hatred for Captain Gray. She looks badass, fits the universe perfectly well, and personality-wise she's actually pretty reasonable. She's not constantly humiliating men or acting like everyone around her is an idiot. She's just a military officer. The argument that every woman is some special leader doesn't even match the game. There are plenty of completely ordinary female COG soldiers running around in standard armor, fighting alongside the men. They aren't all commanders or "girlbosses", they're just Gears and it makes sense women are in militarny after 80 years of devastating Pendulum wars. At that point Sera has been bleeding manpower for generations, so women serving throughout the military is hardly some unbelievable modern insertion. Same with Gills. She's an attractive badass pilot. That's apparently political now? She's basically the exact kind of pilot character you'd see in an 80s or 90s action movie. I genuinely don't understand what is supposed to be controversial about her. Marcus and Dom also aren't background characters either. They are still the protagonists and the game is explicitly about E-Day and the beginning of their relationship as the Marcus/Dom we know. You can absolutely argue that Mags takes too much narrative space away from Dom,I do, but saying Marcus and Dom are just side characters is massively overstating it. The white man is the big bad thing is also just wrong. The actual main villain is Vraahk, the giant Locust commander. Yes, Gray clashes with Trench, but he's basically the stereotypical incompetent/obstinate COG authority figure we've seen before. Prescott wasn't exactly portrayed as some flawless heroic leader either. Calling Trench the big bad of a game where the Locust are literally invading and destroying the city is framing the story backwards just to make an ideological point. As for the LGBT stuff: yes, Mags is gay, and yes, Coalition clearly cares about representation. Kate Rayner, their technical director, is trans and has openly supported LGBT representation. None of that is secret. But that does not automatically prove that "LGBT activists run the studio and sacrificed the game for DEI". That's a gigantic leap. The Pride emblems are an especially weak argument. They're optional profile emblems. If they're as unpopular and useless as you say, then you'll barely ever see them because nobody will equip them. They're not replacing COG flags in the campaign or being plastered over Kalona. And blaming missing multiplayer mechanics on those emblems makes even less sense. Making a bunch of static emblem assets takes basically nothing compared to implementing, animating, networking, testing and balancing mechanics like chainsaw duels or meat shields. Honestly, those mechanics are subjective anyway. Personally I fucking hated them. They weren't in Gears 1, and when chainsaw duels got introduced in Gears 2 I thought the combat became worse. So their absence isn't evidence that somebody neglected the game for an agenda. It's a design decision I personally prefer. The argument about women not realistically being soldiers or officers also doesn't work because female Gears have existed in this universe forever. Anya was already an important military/government character in the original trilogy. The game's own fictional society determines whether women serve in its military and clearly they do. Eastern developers never put sexuality or politics into games is just obviously not true. Japanese games have been full of politics, anti-war themes, gender issues, sexuality, corporate criticism, nationalism, etc. for decades. Metal Gear alone destroys that argument. The "where are the straight characters telling us they're straight?" argument doesn't really work either. They do. They just don't literally say "I'm straight". Dom's entire emotional arc in the original trilogy revolves around his wife Maria. Marcus and Anya become a couple. Those relationships tell us exactly the same thing that a picture of Mags with a girlfriend does. We just don't notice heterosexual relationships as representation because they're everyday to us. So yeah, there are things worth criticizing here. Mags absolutely takes some narrative space that should have gone to Dom. Some classic multiplayer mechanics are missing. If you hate Pride emblems, fine, don't use them, but none of that adds up to "Marcus and Dom are background characters, the villain is a white man, every woman runs the show, the story revolves around queer identity and the developers sacrificed the game for DEI." I've been with Gears since GoW 1, it literally made me switch from PC to console until after GoW 3 and E-Day feels more like proper Gears to me than anything since 3. There are things I would change but calling this a bad game because some women are officers and there are optional Pride emblems is just bizarre to me.

Absolutely, look i agree I'm probably "rounding up" with most of my frustrations 100% But to me all these gripes of mine only subtract from the quality of the experience, and adds nothing, if not very little, there is a reason these games are getting insane backlash on the daily. The game is not doing well, nor did halo, but to each their own, if people want to support a forced agenda infesting and detracting from their ecperience, at the developers own admission, they may, but I won't be. I also agree with you, look JP games to have "politics" but it's not as unapologetically brazen, nor does it detract from the products, if there is political agendas in JP or Asian games, they are often entirely centered around that theme, from start to finish, and it works, as everything strengthens and supports the theme they are going for, including story, characters & setting. Westerns devs they grab a setting and just plop LGBT gay identity politics in it with zero thought of if its realistic or adding/contributing to anything meaningfull, just ticks a DEI box and call it a day. Diversity does not make anything better, in real life, or in a game. Claire obscure was absolutely disgustingly good because there was no agenda, well written, believable dialogue, everything just worked and was grounded for its setting. they just wanted to make a damn good game, and they did. I just wish that was the norm and not an exception. If you enjoyed it 100%, great stuff, i play stuff that people would hate also, I think it's great that people appreciate the good parts, but it's not for me, nor will any other DEI centered games be for me. And I won't support them. Unrelated but capcom is the undisputed AAA king right now, people should take notes.

AgentRedShirt

Awesome. I’ve been a gears fan since the original. Four and five kind of lost their way a little bit, but this feels much more true to form. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The technical Marvel is next level.

AgentRedShirt

A lot of the things honestly that I’ve seen being complained about, they’re reaching honestly. I mean. Is Carter a lesbian? Yeah sure. Kind of figured that from looking at her. So what? It’s not shoved in your face. It’s not like certain other games when they come out within five minutes of meeting them they’re like I’m gay. I haven’t finished the entire story yet. I’m still working on it but from what I’ve seen so far, I have not been disappointed.

Ocelot

I think I distrust reviews from the community more than IGN. I saw a video earlier today of someone saying Gears plays itself, don't buy, the enemy gets wiped out by your teammates in a small section. The same people would complain if your teammates didnt inflict damage or kills

AgentRedShirt

Pretty much. Like they gotta find something to complain about because that’s what gives them the views. In terms of gameplay itself? Very published. It’s not without its quirks, but it’s incredibly smooth and well done. The issue seems to largely revolve around story choices. Or the fact that Mark isn’t the bad ass we know from the original game. One thing they seem to forget is this is 14 years earlier. He hasn’t already spent years fighting the locust. None of them have. Carter was the leader of a squad before she got out. So I’ve seen the scene that people were complaining about and honestly I think they’re drawing a straws to try to complain about something. I don’t get too much away, but I thought it was good. Maybe not the best story ever, but it is no way. “sucks. At least from what I’ve seen so far, I might have a better opinion of it once I finish it completely, which I intend to do by this weekend. I know the game is gorgeous. It plays extremely well on my PC. The battles are intense of fuck and I’m feeling very much like the days when I first got the game on the 360 all those years ago. It’s gritty, it’s raw and it’s very visceral. My recommendation though? The same thing I told everybody. Make your own opinion. Try it out for yourself.

Dylan

I’m so happy your covering this and I hope you follow it up with gears two and three to complete the original trilogy! I also refuse to watch this until I’ve played the game first. (Totally didn’t order an Xbox series x just to play one game.)

SIG

The picture you saw for about 5 seconds is what they are refering to, and that mags gets screentime, at all. Some argue marcus and dom are sidelined for the entire story for her. (Yes, it is this stupid but you cant convince them otherwise) If you are wondering if they played a different game rest assured you can be sure they havent even thought about buying the one we are seeing.

Masenko

lol I saw this on release: and it turns out I had to stop, play this for myself, and now I’m waiting on edge for the next episodes, and the rest of the gears coverage!⚙️🔥 Can’t wait!! Might have to replay the whole series now

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

I filmed part 2 today so hopefully tomorrow! Depends if my editor is working on it tonight. Soon though! It also means I can now play up until part 2, YES!

Masenko

Ohhh my word, I rewatched a few snippets of gears of war 2, and yes whilst the graphics quality are transparent for its time; I am reminded why the original trilogy remains one of the best bits of video game story telling ever made, I can already see some of the comparisons you’ll make between the original trilogy and this new game. I loved this game for its fun and constant engaging gameplay, but the story in 2 and 3 just pierces ya 🥲

Phryte

If you like the beginning scenes you’ll love WWZ
