We’ve got another Death Stranding on our hands!

What do I mean by this? I’m enjoying the game or what I’ve just watched but after I’ve watched it.

I woke up this morning excited to find out what happens next which is a good sign.

Question though… Has that only happened now that the pieces are starting to come together in the story? I now know how to look at this game. I know which way is up and when that happens, there is gravity, a realism to the world! Myself and the audience members can connect to it and the characters within.

I mention this at the end in the post review watch. Some of you know I like my worlds to be grounded even if they are bat shit crazy. What I mean by this is real within the confines of the story that we are watching. The Alan Wake world.

The way Alan Wake is presented, it’s not like that at all. It’s a pure mind field until the image becomes clearer, well I think it has by the end of Part 1. I always say stories pull me out when you can’t believe what you are witnessing. If it is in the mind, then it’s not really happening. There is no threat or I don’t connect that there is a threat.

I’ve mentioned this quite a bit over the years on this channel and I’m curious to know. If you know I’m not that into them, would you still recommend this game and story to me?

Is it worth getting through it for the pay off at the end?

Should you play this game only to make Alan Wake 2 or the Control games hit harder?

I feel this game is like Marmite and you either love it or you hate it.

Once I got my radio tuned in to the correct frequency (my perspective), I started to enjoy the game a lot more but again, that only happened once the pieces started to form.

I can’t work out if it’s the writing of the game or it’s how the video has been edited together. Please let me know. I feel there should or could have been earlier crumbs leading to a small payoff. Those crumbs help connect you to the world and characters.

Speaking of characters, more importantly the MC. Did you guys like Alan Wake and did you connect with him? I have thoughts on this.

-

I’m really looking forward to the payoff on this one and like I mentioned above, I’m thinking about it again today which means I want to play it. I like it!

However, will I love it? We’re heading in the right direction. It’s the same feeling I had and still have to this day for Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding franchise. Even those, I thought about actually picking up recently on Steam.

I feel like I'm being abused and I should hate it yet, I'm smiling.

Play the Tape.

I was JUST thinking to myself today if Alan Wake would be snubbed for spooktober this year, but here we go! I'm sorry I doubted you Kai 🫡 So excited to see your take on these games and the story.

Gonna watch the video in the evening. But regarding the description only, welcome to the world of Remedy games. You'll have many questions, some of which you'll get answers to along the way, but you'll also find even more new ones. People finish the games and argue about how they interpreted the story. I think that's what fans love about them. I can say for myself that when I finish their games, I have my own perspective. Then I read what others think and be like "Damn, I didn't think about it that way". Even in this game, when I played it for the first time, at one point in the story I was like, "Okay, I figured out what's really going on here", only to later realize that my assumptions were wrong. Regarding realism, you shouldn't expect realism from their games; there are a lot of strange things there. But if some of them are just someone's fantasy that happen in their head, then they don't need to be real. I would still recommend this game, even with all its quirks. Yes, it is somewhat reminiscent of DS, but I wouldn’t say it’s exactly the same. You just have to accept it and try to enjoy the journey. Find yourself at the end, ask "What the hell happened?", draw your own conclusion and dive into the second part to finally find answers to some questions. As for the main character himself, he's not supposed to be someone you like; he's a piece of shit at the start. But those who've played both games love him. So I'd wait for some charater development. I can't guarantee you'll like it in the end. But I can guarantee it's one of the most unique experiences, especially the second game.

The Leek

As a filmmaker, you've got to watch Alan Wake 2. It's such an evolution for Remedy games.

Even Max Payne is mixed into the connected world to a certain extent. The character of Alan is not a single performance, the physical acting is by the Finnish actor Ilkka Villi and the voice work is by American actor Matthew Porretta. His voice as Alan burned into my head and every time I see the intro I can't help but try to imitate his monologue. The same goes with James McCaffrey as Max. Yet again I think the modulation of voice to sound completely different than in everyday conversation always fascinated me.

The video skips over a LOT here, which is part of why it seems overly fast. There's a bunch of small moments in the game that, while not vital, I feel really helps set everything up. Also, a bit sad to see them skipping pretty much every one of the manuscripts. They're definitely a big part of the game's story.

kai will you be checking all the cutscenes in outlast and outlast 2

Remedy love to mix real footage into their games. Alan Wake 2 has A LOT of it, and it's great. The enemies you are fighting are real people who have been "taken" by the dark presence between now and the 70's. I don't want to spoil anything but it's not one of those "it was all a dream" stories. Those suck. You'll learn more as you go through the game(s) though. But this world has rules. In regards to Alan as a character, he's not a good person and that's central to his character and the plot. He's a bit of an arsehole really. But I like protagonists that aren't necessarily great people. If you do Alan Wake 2 I hope you get a good playthrough. It's also done in this episode/chapter style and they have original chapter songs which are great. Also Alan Wake is heavily inspired by Twin Peaks yeah.

Haven’t watched yet but this is a reallt bad sign:/

Remedyverse is amazing! Not sure if there are good ’movie’ playthroughs which include vital lore parts (based on a comment this is missing the manuscript pages, which are really important), but if you wanted to explore the whole Remedyverse, go Alan Wake -> Alan Wake’s American Nightmare -> Control -> Control AWE DLC -> Quantum Break* -> Alan Wake 2 -> Control Resonant *Owned by microsoft so the ties to Remedyverse aren’t official, but they exist Edit: Bit tied on which to watch first, Control or Quantum Break :HMM: Control's AWE DLC leads up to Alan Wake 2, but both games are very lore heavy so it might be nice to have QB in between

I think for the player it does explain things better, and there is side stuff not shown in this (manuscrips, radios, tv shows (Night Springs). It all does add to the experience the players feels with the game world. But it is one of those game which you like or won't. Sad they did not show manuscrips so watchers could pause if they wanted to read, nor the Night Spring tv's as they had the real life footage and were fun to watch in my opinion xD

oLaudix

Where Control 1? OG Control has more to do with Remedyverse than Resonant.

Alita

I don't know if it's just me, but the Shadows (enemies) in these games reminds me a lot of Deadites from Evil Dead, with the way they talk and act

Sweetheárt

It’s there after american nightmare, forgot to add an arrow to differentiate it since I added AN afterwards, will edit

Regarding the feel of the game, not getting in to it until the pieces start to come together. That's basically all of Remedys games to be honest. They're each a bit left of center. They deal with symbolism, intense pop culture references and a lot of duality symbolism. This one being a love letter to twin peaks and Stephen King with a bit of LOST thrown in for good measure. As a game its very much on the love/hate side because its a action game with a horror story engine...its a bit of a weird mash up. Alan Wake 2 is more more even as the gameplay and story is survival horror.

KotaVee

Just a heads up but I'll have to watch your video later on and sorry in advance for the long message. First off, welcome to the world of Remedy games! They certainly have a very unique place in the world of video games and I can't wait to see you experience Control and Control Resonant and to see your reactions to some very unique sections of Alan Wake 2! Regarding your questions on if this game is worth watching through. I've played Alan Wake 1 and watched through it a few times. With Alan Wake 1 I was a similar to you in the way that I did not like the game at all the first couple of times I tried playing it. Once I opened up and started things from the beginning and just let the game do it's thing I started to really enjoy it. This game is more of Remedy finding their footing of their style of games with gameplay and story compared to future games being them standing proud and running with it to push the boundaries of what they can do. There are times I feel like this game loses the ground feeling and is my least favorite of the 4 games, but it will certainly give you the background story going into Alan Wake 2. When it come to the connection between Alan Wake and Control they are both happening in the same world with Alan Wake 2 having a DLC focused on Control and Control having a DLC focused on Alan Wake. But those are the only times it really helps knowing both sides besides small side mentions in the base games. Without going into spoilers, I would say to keep in mind that in the Alan Wake and Control games that there is a TON of reality altering stuff going on and keeping an open mind helps. Part of the charm is the guessing on what is real, altered, or in someone's head. But just because something is in someone's head does not mean that it is no longer a threat. Sometimes that means that it is even more dangerous. In Remedy games there are times they will flip the gravity on the viewer but it is usually for a reason when it comes to the world or story. Also a side note, Remedy games are probably the only time I would suggest against GLP because there are a lot of big moments that are major key things to the game or story that uses licensed music that I know they will entirely cut out. There are also a lot of side moments and notes in future games that add to the weird things feeling more grounded in the world that they will most likely cut out because it is not strictly story dialog or cutscenes.

This is awesome! Welcome to the Remedyverse and all of the m'fing that proceeds 😂 If you can find a version that includes the manuscripts that would be better as it helps tie the story together. This is a great place to start but keep in mind it's early on and this is the bedrock on which they will create their surreal universe. Later, they really upped the game with Control and Alan Wake 2 (which was many people's GOTY). Remedy makes odes to Twin Peaks and David Lynch so dream logic and surrealism are a big part of their works.

Cheshers

The fictional band Old Gods of Asgard that you hear in the games is a real Finnish group called Poets of the Fall, their music is awesome 👌

Hyp3r-Tom

As a big fan of the "Remedyverse" if you will, I'm very excited to see you're reacting to Alan Wake (and hopefully more)!! In my opinion they're pretty intriguing games- thought provoking with a delightfully weird personality, and their story/world building is something you kind of piece together on your own as it goes. I love going through them but I really don't know how well the experience will translate into an edited watchable format, so I'm not too surprised reading your intro haha. I won't give any spoilers but I understand your concern lol, and I'm glad you're liking it overall so far! For what it worth as well, Alan Wake is like the prototype of an idea where Alan Wake 2 is the finished product

Christian Watts

The channel who edited this playthrough is cutting a lot by the looks of things, kinda sad they didn't even show Night Springs. The second game is quite the experience, plus the soundtrack is great.

EthanR

There's just over 100 manuscript pages that you find throughout the game that really flesh out the overall story and the inner thoughts of Alan which this video skipped over. Its a shame seeing as the manuscript is the literal plot device of the story and would fill in alot of the narrative questions your posing

Alan Wake is such a strange series to cover because... yeah, the first game is the weakest one, and most fans do admit as much, but at the same time it's still so unique and has such a strong vision of what it is and what it wants to be that it's still ultimately both unique and endearing. Then Control comes along and provides SO MUCH MORE context and real world grounding that it retrospectively makes Alan Wake a far more interesting and engaging game on repeat playthroughs. Then Alan Wake 2 comes along and I'll just say this - it was my game of the year and the fact that it sold as poorly as it did, even though it got a TON of praise is insulting to art as a whole. There isn't really anyone else like Remedy in the industry. They're the champions of story driven works that just FEEL right. You'll see what I mean eventually. I'd also like to note that over the years I've seen a lot of people call Sam Lake (the writer and creative director at Remedy) the Finnish Kojima and yeah, it's absolutely true. Both Sam's and Kojima's work really stand outside the traditional realms of media products and they're so damn special because of it. This is a special series. Remedy is a special studio and I can't praise their work enough. Hopefully, after we get through the Remedy games, you'll feel the SAMe way! YOU ARE A WORM THROUGH TIME. THE THUNDER SONG DISTORTS YOU. HAPPINESS COMES. RED PEARLS BUT YELLOW AND RED IN THE EYE. YOU'VE ALWAYS BEEN THE REAL YOU. A COPY OF A COPY OF A COPY

Hey Kai so there are a few things about Alan Wake that would make you a bit less on the dark so to speak if you played the game. The manuscripts that you keep recovering throught the game, first of all they are collectibles so you can miss a lot of them just passing by, and second of all they are not recovered in cronological order. When you recover a page, you can actually read whats in it, and sometimes it can be something that happened a while ago, something that is happening right in that moment or something that has happened. And that is one of the charms of the writing I think, because they give you breadcrumbs, but you dont know full well where are things going and what it does is that you get the info but the wirting controls when it becomes relevant or not. I think its brilliant because it puts you more on the shoes of Alan Wake, because he is a best seller writer so he can grasp how the story could go, but at the same time he is experiencing these plot twists and cliffhangers and trying to piece it all together in real time And I do think that as Kojima pushed cinematography in games, Remedy pushes writing a lot. And altough they have gotten a lot better at it, I think that is the fans and gamers who appreciate it more now because its unique and true to their way of doing things. Because in the end they challenge writing itself and how the story must be presented, leaving you with the sensation that you think you know whats going on, but there is enough room for interpretation to question yourself about it. And with Alan Wake 2 oh man, youre going to put even more attention to the writing if thats possible.

Wow this playthrough stinks they didn’t show a single night springs episode

Kain D. Zero

I really hope Silent Hill 2 remake does have all the music and soundtrack. That game is a great audiovisual experience.

Kain D. Zero

After an hour of watching this I don't get the charm of this game. I haven't played this game before.

Kain D. Zero

I'm thinking of starting to record video playthroughs of games and posting them on Patreon. That way reactors would have everything and wouldn't have to suffer copyrighted music being cut.

Kain D. Zero

I'd rather watch Twin peaks again than watch more of this but I am powering it through with you Kai. If I don't watch this now I might never know this story.

Kain D. Zero

The squeeky toy noise is getting on my nerves.

Galactic Knight

Alan wake 2 is amazing. Alan wake 1 I had to force myself to play just so I can experience the second one. Has impeccable atmosphere but boring repetitive gameplay and a boring protag. That being said 2 is a banger!

Yoshio

The music of AW 1 was such a vibe, but some was licensed so the playthroughs might not have them, esp the title chapters. The good news is Remedy made custom music for Alan Wake 2 and Control so you should get the full effect with those. And their songs are awesome, some even iconic. Yes, Remedy loves to mix real footage in, they become brilliant at it later, you'll see. These games are like mixed-media conceptual art in a sense.
