Nathan Apffel is a Christian, filmmaker, entrepreneur, and director of The Religion Business, a multi-part docuseries that exposes the financial practices and lack of accountability in Western religion, particularly Christianity. Drawing from personal experiences with church scandals and abuse, Apffel investigates how religious institutions accumulate vast wealth, estimated at $2 trillion in the U.S. alone, while often prioritizing internal spending over community impact, with 94 cents of every donated dollar staying within church walls. Co-produced with Chris Ayoub, the series features interviews with experts like Joel Osteen and highlights issues like the religious exemption from financial reporting.

Apffel is developing tech solutions to promote transparency and community-driven reform in religious organizations. He advocates for ethical governance, victim support, and redirecting resources to solve global issues like poverty and homelessness. Based in the U.S., Apffel blends storytelling, technology, and faith to challenge the status quo and foster meaningful change in the "nonprofit Goliath" of organized religion.

Yes! Finally something holding religious zealots accountable. Love it.

I have been following the sickness and darkness that has been going on in the church for a long time. I have been involved in helping to try to take down and expose leaders in the church who are evil. Look at Daystar, The Potter's House, and it goes on and on. It is going to shock the church, but the church needs to be shocked into reality. The churches are ran like a business and Christ is not the head. We need to take a hard look at how our faith walk is be walked out. The church being led by men and not by Christ! We need to examine first and then trust!

30 minutes in and I already disagree with this guy on pastors getting sucked into the system if they receive a salary. He can't put ALL pastors into one category. My pastor receives a salary, and pastoring is a full-time job for him. Our church has grown to nearly 2,000 people. He is a true man of God, and focuses on building men up to be leaders. He spends all day every single day meeting with people, praying with people, counseling people, and the list goes on. He could NOT do God's work if he had a full-time job outside of being our pastor. Shawn, if you want a true man of God on your show, reach out to Terry Fant with Hickory Ridge Baptist Church in MS.

amazing episode - it was these very things that pushed me away from christianity. shit, we just can't have nice things, can we?! This goes to show you that ANYTHING and ANYONE can be corrupted. I'd like to think that a few good, committed people can turn things around.

I didn't like the beginning of this but being a Catholic, it's hard to trust my kids with church. I'd rather do Bible study and do it myself. These are unpopular opinions but need to be said.

At 2:42:48 my head exploded with revelation. Cause I've been battling in my head what church what pastor i should go to since my path back to Jesus was played in his foot steps a year ago. And this whole year. I haven't been able to get much traction on info from Christians to watch church i would like. They all say, " come on Sunday you'll see!" Even after I say that churches don't sit well with me cause in my past experiences I don't feel the lord in alot of these "churches". I see the lord in the congregation but not in the pastor or priest. Reason why I referenced the time stamp of this episode my eternal battle of choosing a church is i can choose any one of them, I'm have never been baptized. I don't want to choose a sect of religion that is wrong with faith in Jesus. So when Nathan said , his friend asked him, "Nathan! You know there's only one church right!? The church of christ!" Blew my mind at 46 years. Thank you that. Bless your family and you

This does not apply to all churches The large church in SBC life would be around 100 people The churches I know of are this size or smaller They are not wealthy and do a lot of work in the community, in the name of Jesus They help take care of the membership, and support the local schools, in the name of Jesus The mega church has thrown a lot of shade on the smaller churches

I’m a pastor of a small church—under 100 attendees. I do receive a salary of $500 a week and the church owns a parsonage we live in. It’s a 50 year old home that’s less than 1.800 sq ft. Needless to say I’m not getting rich from working for the organization. We aren’t flashy or trendy even. We DO have accountability for our financial and our outreach ministries. We have safeguards against sexual predators. My #1 goal is to connect people with Jesus as savior and help them understand how to read and interpret the Bible on their own and then teach others how to do the same thing. (That’s a form of making disciples.) I’m fine with someone exposing abuse, corruption, and fraud. Please do this. But it’s troubling to lump all pastors into the same group. Nathan needs to spend some time at little congregations and give a little credit IF it’s due. Here’s the irony: I went to his religion business website and there’s nothing I can do without paying money. Our church has a website. It’s got lots of stuff in there. It doesn’t make you pay for anything. And if I thought that my salary (which has been the same for 11 years) was keeping people from receiving the Gospel, I’d stop getting paid by the church tomorrow and get a job outside somewhere. Random stuff I wouldn’t have time to do if I did that: (stuff I did just this week) -eat with one of my newest homeless friends and celebrate the good things God is doing in his life -clean up a PILE of blood from an older parishioner’s floor from when she had fallen and cut her head -help someone hang a tv in their home and answer questions he had about the faith -meet with a couple to give Biblical counsel to them as they prepare for marriage -teach 5 young men life/job skills in landscaping -repair a single mother’s car -attend the football game for one of our jr high kids -repair the roof on the church building -sit with a 43 year old alcoholic and share the hope that God has for him to stop drinking All while still faithfully loving my wife, raising my daughter, and mentoring people in their faith. Most of the pastors I know could share a similar story of receiving a small to modest salary, working hard to serve others, teaching and preaching the Gospel, and being faithful to God. I appreciate exposing fraud and abuse. But please don’t believe all pastors and church congregations are the same as Ed Young or Kenneth Copeland or the LDS church or whatever.

I have a request for Shawn Ryan. I don't know if he sees this. But I wish he would have someone with a perspective to offset his view. Someone on the other side who knows biblical definitions of church and what church looks like in the Bible. I love the definition of church as the people not the building or structures. I grew up in the church and my pastors and the congregation did in regard to church teach me it's following Jesus and the church is people. They did such a great job that I've been a pastor for over 30 years now. I really enjoyed this episode, even though I disagree with the speaker. I have the same concerns about religion as business in American Society as well and how it impacts our Gospel witness. I've have concerns about most mega churches because there is a lot of false teachings and it's a show. But I do churches that were mega churches before the non denominational mega churches who were really faithful. I've not served in a mega church before but I've served in small, midsized, and large churches who are transparent and have accountability and are Jesus loving, following people. And he just seemed to cast a dark shadow on churches who really strive to be faithful. But I see a lot of what he is talking about and it concerns me. It makes me think about my own leadership and church so I can assess the danger to comprising. My goal is to be a faithful follower of Jesus until I die or He returns. I'm closer to one of those two options every day and I just want to run my race faithfully until I cross the finish line. A great guest for you as an offset is John Piper. I know John. I've seen how he pastors over the years. He really tried to live his faith and he has had a different approach to Desiring Ministries. I believe all the funds go back into the ministry. His home is not like Kenneth Copelands home. It's a regular family home. But I think he would give an in-depth perspective and balanced. He'd be honest I think

Apffel grossly misrepresented the LDS church. Can’t believe he had the audacity to blatantly lie. Response to his lies, incoming… where do you want it?

If you could do it yourself or “by your works alone” you wouldn’t have needed a savior in the first place.
