Yeah I'd be really interested in trying out Episode 1 and just seeing where this goes. Perhaps after we finish PoJ!

Let me know by giving the video a like if you guys would want to watch it together!

Maybe we could watch the first episode together sometime, if you’re interested.

you have to check out trailer for "Love In The Clouds" its such a good fantasy cdrama, it's same level as pursuit of jade)

mali

totally agree

mali

i would also truly recommend checking out the prisoners of beauty.

oh, that's a real surprise! Of course I would like to watch Veil of Shadows with you. It's a very complex story but I'm sure people will help you if needed (I won't be able because tbh I dropped it but maybe with you, I will be able to watch it until the end XD) I agree with Dina for her recommendation, Love in the clouds is excellent and also if you want, try to read the summary of "Love beyond the grave", I think it's a drama you will love (be aware the trailer of the serie spoil almost everything so if you want to watch a trailer watch the trailer for the 1st episode https://youtu.be/v070uC5Vt2Y?si=d0r_WD5aBn7fFX9y ) Also, if you want to continue watching cdrama, you may be obligated to take subscription to their different websites: iqiyi, youku, wetv. Most of them are on viki or netflix (don't like their subtitles). At the moment I don't think it's necessary for you, but unfortunately, sometimes cdramas are only on their sites. I preferred to let you know in case you come across a drama that isn’t available outside their apps.

Heya! I am quite new to your channel, as I joined only about a week ago just to watch your entertaining PoJ reactions. My own journey in the C-drama world started very recently, only about 4 months ago, but it has become my favorite entertainment at the moment. I really hope you keep watching C-dramas because I truly enjoy your reactions; I don't think I’ve ever had as much fun with anyone else's! I watched the first episode of Veil of Shadows on the day it aired, but since I was already in the middle of a few other C-dramas, I put this one on my "watch later" list. What I can say is that the first episode introduced A LOT of characters, and it was quite hard to follow who the leads were, but the visuals and combat were amazing. I hadn't watched any trailers, so I entered the story blind, which was maybe why I was a bit confused about what's what. Even if you decide not to watch this one, I’ll probably finish it eventually anyway. As for the other dramas mentioned in the comments—Love In The Clouds and Love Between Fairy and Devil—I've seen them both, and they are definitely worth a watch. I would recommend them both to anyone! And a side note - in Love Between Fairy and Devil the secondary lead is Zhang Linghe (ML in PoJ).

Yeah there's a LOT of story going on in Veil Of Shadows and it's slooowly unfolding, it's a bit like a (murder) mystery I guess, you can theorize along the way what's going on, but it will only really be understandable with each new clue and then the last puzzle piece sliding into place in the last epi, so Ig this is one of those 'enjoy the journey dramas' ;) I got into CDramas only ~ 2 years ago and like some others said there's an entry barrier with the multiple names possible for charas or locations and some lore about how certain views on gods/demons etc... but otoh it's not different from an anime journey, you start by simply doing it and while it might feel a bit clunky while getting used to it and you still have to figure out if you'll enjoy all genres etc. it's also just rlly fun to dive into new story worlds :) I'm crossing my fingers & hoping you'll enjoy this one, would love to rewatch Veil Of Shadows with your reaction (I was signed up a while ago for your One Piece journey, so it's fun to sign up again with you diving into CDramas now haha, I'll sign on either way to catch up on your POJ)

I'm interested at starting this one too. I would watch the first episode with you

Snow

Personally, I’m not sure if this is the best drama to continue your C-drama journey with. It’s beautifully shot, but the story might be quite hard to follow, especially if you’ve only watched POJ as your first C-drama. That said, you should definitely form your own opinion! And if it feels too difficult right now, you can always come back to it later. I’m not sure if you’re open to C-drama suggestions here if not, feel free to ignore the rest. But I’d recommend trying a few other historical and modern dramas: Historical/Costume: Blossom (same director as POJ) Prisoner of Beauty A Dream Within a Dream Fangs of Fortune (same director as Veil of Shadows) Guardians of the Dafeng Modern: The First Frost Glory of Special Forces (military) Under the Skin You Are My Glory

Irena Kukule

I totally agree with you! Love in The Clouds is my most favorite drama and PoJ sits right next to it.

Irena Kukule

I am not sure about Love Beyond the Grave. Even though the OST, the visuals, and the atmosphere—practically everything—were top-notch, I felt forced to watch it after the mid-teen episodes. Something just didn't click with me anymore, so I guess it depends on the viewer. I have currently finished episode 20 and stopped. I cannot find it in me to continue... except that I am a completionist, which means I probably will finish it at some point!

Have to agree with Love In The Clouds being in the comments, that was an definitely incredible show all the way through! Another show I would rec which is more on the modern side but still has martial arts and good fighting) action is The Seven Relics of ill Omen.

Elise H. (XxXIllegirlARMYXxX)

I also saw someone mention How Dare You?! in the stream chat and have to say that's one of my favorite dramas of this year so far! It was soooo well done, I loved it so much!

Sakura

Don't read this others members it will contain spoilers! Oh, seriously? I devored it even though I don't particularly like Dilireba (it's a me problem, not on her hand 😅)...let me think... episode 20 is more about developing the underworld and Simu's history but I can understand why you were bored at that point and dropped it, maybe later try some more episodes you will discover some hidden story and later their relation will take a new turn. I won't reveal more just do remember there is 2 endings when you finish it. I don't know if the special episode with the other ending is available on Viki. I recommended it because it's kinda light for a first fantasy c-drama and introduce some concepts without overwhelming the viewer like veil of shadows will do 😅

Elise H. (XxXIllegirlARMYXxX)

It's true that wuxia/xianxia genre dramas might be a bit hard to get into in the beginning because a lot happens esp when you're not used to the lore but don't let this scare you off haha Personally I don't think Veil of Shadows was as cohesive/strong as the directors previous drama Fangs of Fortune (nor would I say it's really entry level xianxia) but I did still have a hell of a fun time with it though so you never know until you watch lol

Irena Kukule

Thanks for the advice! I might return to it sometime in May, I suppose. Most likely before Key to the Phoenix Heart, Southern Anecdote, and When I Meet The Moon are released, because I plan to watch those while they air and would like to clear up some of the unfinished ones before then.

Julianne

O… dangerous territory. I personally dropped it but curious how long you last 😅 I don’t think I made it through the first ep. To be fair I really don’t like the director though. Could be a personal problem but I just feel like he doesn’t tell a good story and focuses a lot more on piling on tropes and shock factor and making ppl look pretty in slomo shots

iSlyther

I personally didn't get to finishing this show, not because i got bored but because i had other things going on, I would however recommend legend of the female general i believe its called, that was pretty good from what i remember, or if you are looking for a more fantasy style one, moonlit reunion is also quite good and has the same actress as PoJ

Julianne

I’d recommend Under the Skin, or Nirvana In Fire s1,s2 or Joy of Life. Or if we’re keeping with the fantasy, mmmm actually I don’t have any from the last 5 yrs that I finished so bad track record from me there. The closest is probably Love Between Fairy and Devil for me as well. I think someone mentioned it.

Julianne

Oh wait I did finish and enjoy Love Game In Eastern Fantasy. It didn’t necessary leave a lasting impression on me though. Other than the fact that I like the ML’s acting haha.

Julianne

Quietly add The Untamed and Word of Honor but uh… I think it’s just on Netflix now lol.

Julianne

Oh lol the comments below are reminding me that Dream Within a Dream and Prisoner of Beauty were pretty decent. I wasn’t as emotionally invested tho so I didn’t finish them, but I got pretty far. Prob Dream Within a Dream I would rank slightly higher bc I thought it was kinda hilarious

FLUFFFANTASY

I think you should go to dramas like Blossom, which has the same director as POJ. Incredibly good storytelling, amazing chemistry between the leads, and incredible cinematography, with a very clever female lead and a strong general male lead.

Maria

A lot of good recommendations in the comments. Some I've seen, some not yet. Some I haven't planned on watching yet. Maybe in the future. I saw Legend of the Female General mentioned. I think you will like this one for sure. From what I can understand from searching up what period in history the shows might theoretically be taking place then Legend of The Female General might be set around 500-1000 years before POJ. Maybe. Beans is more fictional, so it's not set in a specific era. From the others mentioned by others, the ones I've seen and liked: Till The End Of The Moon Love Between Fairy and The Devil Fangs of Fortune Guardians of the Dafeng The Untamed Word of Honor I've not yet seen, but are on my to watch list: Love in the Clouds Prisoners of Beauty Love Beyond the Grave Moonlit Reunion Love Game in The Eastern Fantasy Dream Within A Dream

Lost_IRL

This was my 2nd cdrama ever, i have watched 4 episodes as of this moment. I like it so far and its not that complicated to understand. Hope u do watch it!

Truthfully, after watching the trailers, "Veil of Shadows" was one of the C-dramas I was interested in watching this year, along with Pursuit of Jade, Overdo, and a couple of others. Unfortunately, after a couple of episodes and realizing who the director was, I dropped it. While his stylistic signatures and high-octane combat scenes are visually engaging, the endings in other works left me disappointed or feeling depressed. Then I read this is par for the course for this director. I'd like to recommend "The Truth" Season 4. A Chinese variety show with Zhang Ling He (POJ), Liu Luning (POB), Dilraba Dilmurat (YAMG), and 3 other cast members. What's amazing is that they rank #1, #9, and #3 on China's Global and Domestic actor/actress lists. I can't imagine Hollywood's elites solving comical murders and doing hilarious physical tasks. The first episode's preview showed them yelling as they performed hysterical, electrified pull-ups.
