we are out at a party with all of our friends when you disappear on me. the second you vanish i’m looking everywhere until dave lets me know you stepped out onto the balcony. i poke my head outside to find you leaning against the wooden banister. you don’t turn around, you barely say anything. your fingers gripping the splintery wood tightly as you try to get me to leave. i can tell you’re upset, and i want to talk it through with you. you both do and don’t want to, you want space to be annoyed at me but i don’t want space, i just want to understand what happened. so we talk, and as we do your grip tightens until tiny broken pieces find places to take hold in your fingers and palm. you pull away and wince, and i can’t stand by and watch you hurt. everything changes, the argument vanishes and all that matters is taking care of you. you thought if things ever got serious it meant i would look for the door, but i don’t want any door that doesn’t lead to you.
