Today I'm breaking down a classic hip hop song: "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat) by Digable Planets. We'll see how the group was formed, recreate the beat from scratch, and see how the show In Living Color was the thing to push it over the edge, giving the group a hit song, and a Grammy!

NOTE: This is the Extended Edit which is 5 mins longer and does not include a sponsor

Beat me by 15min lol 😄😄😄 This video has soooo much in it! THIS was my kind of groove back in the day! Love Digable Planets! 9th Wonder was my big fav next to Rebirth of Slick....And don't get me started on 'In Living Color'! It was more 'off color' than anything LOL!!! Not 'socially acceptable' nowadays but I was literally ROTFL at those shows back then. Definitely 'must see TV' for me and my Fam! Tommy Davidson doing McHammer still kills me each time I see it LOL!!! The original broadcast version has the live studio audience and they were cracking up so loud! 🤣🤣🤣 But here's a better version of it...just for giggles! 🤣 https://youtu.be/tYi3pwK6KkI?si=GXykLzh1hGdKnQbJ I was hoping we'd get a NYE livestream! I have to work on NYE, but I'm going in much later so I could have some 'party time' beforehand! And I'm putting this out again...BShaw - think about doing bass on "Glide" by Pleasure. Dude, you can KILL this!!!

Remember when this album came out. Had a shitty summer job home from college. One payday got this album and a nice bag of weed. Lost the album, smoked the weed, but streamed the whole album just last month. Effortlessly cool.

Digable Planets changed my life. As a young suburban kid who was pretty sheltered, this song blew my mind. Before then, my entire understanding of hip hop was either house party music like Kid n Play or gangsta rap like NWA, etc. For some reason the entire Native Tongues collective completely missed me, so Dig Plans and specifically Rebirth was the first jazz rap record I heard. I was mesmerized by it. Discovering this genre of hip hop that is so musical and deep was refreshing. To date, my brother credits me introducing him to this song with his lifelong love of hip hop, and music in general. Digable Planets are not as good as compatible groups like Tribe, and Blowout Comb is better than Reachin IMO, but they are and always will be my favorite hip hop group and this album holds a special place in my heart. I love them so much I have a tattoo of a butterfly, a ladybug and a doodle bug lol.

as soon as he let all the tracks of the song play through, right at the end my brain went (we like the breeze flow straight out of our lids) couldnt help myself. Great video BShaw! I've been waiting a long time for Digable Planets video!

B I love the in living color reference. Being from Hawaii I’m know Carrie Ann Inaba who was a fly girl and I’m friends with Fly Girl Lisa Todd to this day. Just got the hang with her in Boston last month. I was wondering if when you would do this track. I still play DP a few times a month hahahaha.

Josh Nelson

Wow, compelling story! Thanks for reminding me of DP; bringing back, yet elevating (with the snaps) the Hitch two step, and turning me on to Nick, who I've never heard of; can't wait to check him out - his edit was niiice. The stems are killer, too! ❤️

Scott Zeligson

Saw them in 1993. The had a backing band and a DJ.

Terrance Sanders

Ayoooo B, dope mash up of that Outta Control remix track with the Cool Like Dat vocals‼️💯🎧🎙

TheNationsRListening

How did I miss this? I just did a video with them as well. 🤯

L.A. Williams

I never realized until listening to this video that the baseline changes right before each of them goes into the hook

Tonio Butler

This was a great video. Thanks for making it.
