Today I'm breaking down Kendrick Lamar's album "DAMN", getting into the music, the lyrics, the thematic elements, the twist, and seeing why he won a Pulitzer Prize for this album.

NOTE: This is the Extended Edit which is Uncensored, 8 mins longer, and includes much more music.

Damn was a solid album to me but I never really was crazy about it. The beats were more new school. My old ass wasn't feeling a lot of them 😂

Lyrics still on point as always though. But I am sure you will give me a different view on it after watching your video.

Jahn Mathis

I get hate for this but DAMN. is my favorite Kendrick album. I'm not even saying it's his best but it's the one I can run though back to back to back. Superb piece of art

Yosheeyaw Bogan

You are a purely amazing how you break it down and explain it to us. Thank you for all you do!

LightsOutG

Great work! I don’t remember where I heard it, maybe the music video, but I vaguely remember a different opening for DNA. where he says “Wicked or weakness, you gotta see this” instead of the normal intro.

prod_tfm

53 minute video 😩 we living good this holiday season

Avery

I remember first listening to this album in the spring/summer of 2017 when I was living in Chicago and this being the soundtrack to taking trains everyday from the Southside to Northside and back. Now that I no longer live there, this album feels like a photobook of memories from that time. Thank you for making this!

probablyjustJoe

I was all settled in with this SZA drop and now this?

TheProducerDJ AKA DJ Quezs

Great Video, awesome breakdown. Truly appreciate you for this. Now I can always point to this video as why this is his best album. 🙌🏾

Trey Buckner

I never really thought about the reversed version in the way to spoke about it, very cool to hear!

IAMZERO

Just out of curiosity, have you been listening to j.coles podcast? Is that inspiring any videos like the Dilla Time book did?

Steve Pappalardo

Thorough and thought provoking breakdown of the album. I listened to it all the way through again today. Musically still not my favorite. A bit too laid back for me. But on an artistic level a feat without a doubt.

Martin SFP Bryant

I’ve never got into Kendrick- just not my kind of thing - but I watched this epic video from start to finish and enjoyed every minute - like enjoying reading a restaurant review more than eating the food!

Steven Sion

Good God that was probably the best breakdown of an album that I have ever heard. Well done 👏

David Gorden

I remember the first time I played the album in reverse order, before they had put out the deluxe, when I say it gave me chills...for all the reasons you laid out...I knew then that Dot might be the greatest.... Sheesh....

Frankie John-Lewis

Bravo, excellent breakdown. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

Matt Pusch

Still waiting for DAMN.NATION (Great vid btw)

Marshall Crayshaw

✊🏾 this was a hit bruh. Congrats and all the best

Kris Pendleton

Everytime I watch your videos I go back and listen to whatever you're breaking down. You've opened my ears and mind so much. I love to watch how much love you have for depth of the art in music.

Justin Lyons

You're kinda good at this.. I love kendricks hits just on face value but never bothered to sit with his albums admittedly because because I knew there was so much that would go over my head. Now seeing this i can't wait to go appreciate DAMN. how it was intended

Kris Blindert

Wow. I have a long trip coming up, and now I know exactly how to while away the time -- listening to both versions with a whole new perspective.

Nick D

This is top tier content! I’ve always heard about this album winning a Pulitzer and I’ve been listening to it and enjoying it for years but not until your breakdown did I understand how much I was missing.

Josh Nelson

Whoa, going Dostoevskian on Mr. Lamar! I'll look forward to listening to DAMN, which I've never heard.

Josh Nelson

Damn! I'm only at minute 16 and this is dense. Really respect the drill-in and effort you are putting into this, Brandon. (the trackConcept lattice - ged-oudda-hr).

Paul O'Mara

This video is a masterpiece. Imma listen to DAMN. a few times then rewatch this video!

Gerard Blair

Feel after all the effort you put in, I should listen to the album again before watching this. So I will.

Kevin Lee

Fantastic end to a stand-out year of work! Can’t wait to pull Damn off the shelf for a fresh listen — you are the music professor I never had. Thank you!

dwaine m

I actually was speechless, as my first response! An amazing break down/analysis of DAMN! I now hear the songs differently, so will go back and listen through!

Ambree Williams

This is your most extensive video, and I should at least look at it, even though I really don't like Kendrick Lamar that much...but I'll take one for the team. I'll leave my thoughts below once I'm done...

BShaw, I'm giving you props for your monumental effort in interpreting Kendrick Lamar's music in such a thoughtful, insightful way, and really going all out with the visuals. It's your best yet, and you get all applause from me. 👏🏾👏🏾 And that's a wrap!!! 😏

Alden Kirkland

First. The way you explain it being reversed makes me so sad about this story. Also. The original title for the Collectors edition was “NATION” which would have made the album completely called “Damnation” which goes into the story even more so! Great Job BShaw! Thank you for your videos

Gerard Blair

Wow, mind blown. Great analysis. Just a bit worried your next door neighbours thinking you were having some sort of psychotic breakdown in your yard.

Vino Miranda

Excellent analysis and an outstanding video! I already loved this album but this added even more depth to it for me

Cassidy Eassa

This video is a masterpiece! Thank you so much-- it really helped me understand the narrative of the album. I think the only thing I disagree with in the video is your closing thoughts on the blind woman and the news clip. I think instead of representing God, the blind woman is Justice (as in the maxim "justice is blind"). Therefore instead of being killed by God, Kendrick is shot/hurt by the justice system. You can read this as being killed by the police or as being discriminated against in general (misjudged). What do you think?

Jay G

I’ve listened to this so many times in album order, never realising it could be reversed. I’m looking forward to the upcoming ↪️ listens.

Tommy Caillouet

Outstanding. I have trouble focusing on lyrics and just enjoy the musicality often. DAMN. forced me a little out of that habit in the dozen times I've listened to it. This video will change the next dozen times (if only because a few of those will be backwards).
