Silent Hill F Delivers the Perfect Jump Scare

Marty digs into one specific moment in Silent Hill F that exemplifies the kind of jump scare that feels earned, rather than cheap. Was going to comment on the YT video, but I hate YT comments. Also I never get alerted if someone replies and I can’t be assed to crawl through comment sections to manually check. Anyway. I love how it gets you twice. I’m ashamed to admit that it got me twice *in the same playthrough*. I made a mistake and threw a weapon away at the end of my session, and just decided to go back to my last save, so I had this happen twice. Got me both times. My partner and I (hah, topical) have been really enjoying the game so far. They helped me through SH2R, and doing the same with this one. Enjoyed the video, as always, Marty 👍

Sitting in a veterinary office waiting on x rays. Thanks for the pleasant distraction, Marty!

I don't play survival horror games cause I'm easily spooked but I always enjoyed watching someone else play them. This got me intrigued so I might watch a playthrough and be thoroughly amused at the player's (and mine) reaction to the jumpscares.

Ha, I’m glad I’m not the only one who got spooked by the scare.

Watching someone else play through a spooky game is a perfectly valid way of experiencing it! I had a whole crew watching along as I streamed it on Twitch, and we had a really good time.

The first time it happened, my partner actually screamed haha. It was a really good one! Not actual jump scares obviously, but the puppet / scarecrow things creep me out. Going through the school now, and man was I on edge when they stated showing up in the halls.

In the same vein as TLOU2's workbench scare and the mimic, the way jump scares are used in Condemned 1 really stuck with me. The game takes a mundane, normally safe, and most importantly repeated task like opening a locker or climbing a ladder and has an enemy jump out at you one time earlyish in your playthrough. Something in the player's head reclassifies that task from safe to unsafe, and every time after that when you're scavenging or climbing you're bracing for it to happen again, which it never does. The tension from that one scare lingers with you for hours afterwards, it absolutely elevates the horror.

Great video. And that ending! Chefs kiss.
