The last few weeks have been absolutely stacked with good video games... with even more on the way. We've got a lot of different games to talk about tonight, plus some additional news updates on studio layoffs and closures.

Send in your thoughts, questions, or topics you'd be interested in us discussing! We won't have time to read and discuss everything, and please keep posts topical, safe for work and not huge walls of text.Submissions close at 6 PM CT on Thursday, October 9th.

Coming straight out of Silksong and into Ghost of Yōtei has been jarring. I’m finding it much harder to get into than I did with Tsushima even though it’s probably technically better than the first one and I think it’s the design divide between the two.

How do people have time to play more than like 1 game a month. I'm still going through Silksong. Love it. But between work and regular adult stuff I can't get more than maybe 10 hours a week total.

A good list of the games in question would be welcome. I've been so overwhelmed the past few months that I have no idea what came out aside from, like, Deltarune Ch 3&4 and Silksong. Especially on the indie sphere. Life, man....

I finally finished Silksong just to immediately dive into Ghost of Yotei. My backlog is growing steadily and BF6 and Pokemon come out soon. Do I need to quit my job to play games full time?

At times like this, how do you decide what to play and what to wait on? I'm just overwhelmed with choices right now and want to know how other people deal with this.

From last week's pod - Tencent was mentioned along with PIF as another example of a state-owned org buying their way into western culture for cache. Tencent have another motive though, and I think their purchase of Path of Exile dev Grinding Gear Games is an example - they have a huge local audience that they want to extract capital from. When Tencent bought GGG they left the main product alone as promised, and instead created a hyper-monetized pay-to-win version specific to Chinese players. Just food for thought - I don't think their and PIF's models are identical.

Shout out to KC for the Mashle anime recommendation. Its just the kind of show I needed right now.

I only really tend to play one game a month (give or take 2 weeks), but I also play JRPGs, so that's on me. I am still on Trails in the Sky FC Remake from mid-Sept. I am on track to finish in the next week, though I am no longer going to play Pokemon Legends Z-A at launch, so I will have to find something from my backlog instead while waiting for Dragon Quest I+II HD-2D Remake at the end of the month.

I've always found milsims kinda boring because of their commitment to realism, but loved Hideous Destructor because it has the same level of depth while being set in a very interesting stylized world with lots of cool tech to play with. Being stylized also gives it more leeway to balance its mechanics and weapons in interesting ways - for example the ZM66 (assault rifle) jams constantly, has DRM, experiences cookoffs, and is an overall piece of shit. But it's also the only readily-available weapon that can punch through armor. Do you think we might see more stylized, unrealistic games borrowing elements from the milsim genre?

On a more serious note, have you all heard about the internal cancellation of an Assassin's Creed game set during the American Civil War and Reconstruction? I am not confident that the current factory engine of modern Ubisoft could have delivered, but I would relish something with as much punch as the ACIV DLC Freedom Cry. That campaign has one of the most brutal guy punches that I have ever experienced, and I keep hoping to see something else like that emerge from the series but they keep missing.

I know you all have to play every game that comes out, but how do you recommend the average gamer pick and choose? I personally don't tend to follow FOMO, but rather pick which game/show/movie I'd be most annoyed at being spoiled for me.

Mopman43

Did you see the news about Hyper Light Breaker’s development being ended and a lot of the team being laid off?

Fuzzy Freestyle

Just wrapped up Final Fantasy Tactics: Ivalice Chronicles. Still holds up well, especially with the modern quality of life improvements. It's been a good year for retro remasters. I've played Suikoden 1 and 2 as well as Lunar 1 and 2 this year. Feels like the late 90s again. Next up for me is Dragon Quest 1&2 at the end of the month. I swear I'll play some of these new fangled games y'all are talking about later.

With so many games coming out i find it harder and harder to sit and play them. What with 12 hour work shifts and a kiddo, I've found myself watching more video game media instead of actually sitting down and playing (you're welcome ;D) Sitting down to play the next 10/10, 5 Star adventure has become almost too much of an ask. To combat this ive changed my gaming habits towards either short form, rogue-esque games like Monster Train and Dead Cells, or just straight up interesting slop like FossilFuel 2. I know you guys do this for a living but do you think if you had more conventional 9-5 jobs, you'd still find the time to put into these longer form games or would you drown in the slop with me?

I've found a good pattern for myself of playing a *big game* and following it with a few smaller games before going back to a big one. After finishing Silksong, I played Cook Serve Forever, and I have a few more small titles to play before I jump into something big again. It helps me get through my backlog and eases me out of super-absorbing experiences that can take up too much space in my brain.

With the amount of games coming out and my limited free time, I have some decisions to make on what to prioritize playing. From these 5 games which 2 do you think I should prioritize and which should I wait for a sale on? - Shinobi: Art of Vengeance - Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound - Ghost of Yotei - Absolum - Baby Steps Curious about everyone's takes here but if the question is too boring for the podcast, feel free to ignore and I'll just figure it out on my own.

DNJ

MGS Delta, then Silksong, then Digimon: Time Stranger. I can't remember the last time I had such a booked up gaming schedule. Can you guys think back to any notable instances of games fighting for your attention?

Blackmage

I feel you here strongly! My 2 year old and work are so much time. I'm still in SilkSong trying to kill the Cogwork Dancers. I just play what feels good and cant care about finishing. KC, you have a kid and multiple jobs. How do you do it? P.S. You're one of my gamer dad heroes

Inverse Skies

If video games media can’t keep up what hope do we plebs with non video game related jobs and kids have?

Gilac88

As a patience gamer myself, I’m curious. Any games are planning to not play at launch but you know you will enjoy it later when you have time to play it?

ImmenseCookie

No idea brother, I'm in that boat with you.

This is me with almost every game -- I rarely buy on release, and even when I do I'm often in the middle of another game and want to finish it before starting on a new one.

bluemage27034

In this game tsunami, is there a game or games that you think you're going to miss out on that you really regret? Either it's just always going to be pushed down the backlog or you'll miss the day one experience and that's crucial?

Tiptopbranch

As of writing, there are just 16 hours and 32 minutes until Battlefield 6 launches, but who's counting? So my question is how important is a campaign to a Battlefield release after so many years without a proper campaign in their games? Sorry to whoever's fantasy team that must have tanked.
