Having played Spec Ops without having gone through much of anything from the modern warfare era beforehand, I think the game still holds up really well without that foundation. I'm sure being more aware of the subversion elevates it, but what's there on the surface is still plenty impactful and interesting. Shame it's unavailable digitally

Yep, I mention Brian Lloyd on the podcast, a fellow Irish critic who pointed me to it. He made it sound like it was more in conversation with the whole multimedia apparatus around the war genre, if that makes sense? (He compared it overtly to "Apocalypse Now.")

I think that's a fair assessment, there's also an examination of what people expect out of a video game plot and narratives as a whole baked in there. It's a really great spin on the Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now formula that I can't begin to explain without spoiling everything. There's the option to watch a stream of the campaign, but I'd definitely treat that as a last option since it's really important that you're in control and making the choices along the way. It's probably not worth going to great lengths to play it, but if you get the chance, it's really fantastic.
