Hey all! Nick and KC are both out today, but the show must go on. So I figured this would be a good time to just have a nice Fireside Chat with me and all of y'all.

I'll be gabbing about Crimson Desert reviews, DLSS5 falling on its face, the Subnautica 2 situation getting even stranger, a bit of Weeb Shit, and some Pokopia love.

Holler at me with any any questions/comments/concerns about any of the above, or anything else you want me to ramble about.

Cheers!

~Marty

If ever there was a time to make Darren play 12 Minutes, now is the time

You'e mentioned before you like Digital Foundry. What do you make of the backlash they received? Does it not feel like everyone wants independent journalism that is spontaneous but then expects them to have the same cautious, polished approach as a corporate outlet with many more resources?

ergotpoisoning

What do you think about Jason Schrier's reporting on the Kalshi betting lines for Crimson Desert reviews?

bluemage27034

Just turn it into an anime steam. Tasteful anime, of course

Marty’s FDR era

Because I have the same head injury as you Marty, I started playing NeiR:Automata and loved it so much I resourced a copy from way back of Drakengaurd, I know you replay everything but have you ever sought out spiritual precursors or a specific directors/studios work after playing a landmark title?

Bartender

Just wanted to say that I've been a fan of yours since the Beyond days and am thankful for all the Marty goodness over the years. We live in the same area and I've always wondered what I would do if I saw you in public. Would you like to be accosted by a stranger or should I just play it cool?

Rob Paul

Regarding DLSS5, I've seen some headlines stating that devs were unaware of its implementation and features. I was curious if you had done a dive into this topic and maybe knew any more details (or if Nick was going to cover it on Unpacked)?

Ryan Pattison

Fireside chats in games? Obviously Red Dead 2. Others that come to mind are Outer Wilds, Dungeons of Hinterberg, Sea of Stars. Probably a ton in JRPGs I haven't played.

Ryan Betts

Please come prepared with sock puppets of KC and Nick so you can have them chime in saying classic KC and Nick lines

Ryan Betts

Producer Eric's goofs are gonna have to do a lot of heavy lifting this time around

LaboratoryManiac

I've been hooked on Pokopia since launch day and have appreciated the steady stream of Pokopia content from Marty since then. This feels like a game I'll be revisiting for a long time. On another note, anyone watching the new season of Invincible? It's good, but wow was it ever devious of Amazon to drop the first THREE episodes all at once, in the middle of the night, in the middle of the work week.

I have finally grabbed a PS2 emulator in order to play the first Shadow Hearts game. I played the sequel without content about 15 years ago in college on the original hardware, but the first game was already impossible to get ahold of back. I am loving it (and likely need to replay the sequel) and it does remind me of my favorite era of Final Fantasy (V-IX). Any shout outs for unrelated games that remind you of other games that you love? Especially so in instances where the older game(s) are no longer being made or no longer made in the same way.

Jed

Hey, could you elaborate on your recent Akihabara experience? I think the last part of your Tokyo travelogue never hit the air, and as I visited Tokyo for the first time last year, I am curious about your opinion

Lil' Cass (CJ)

In light of the Crimson Desert reviews, what are your thoughts on "hype not always equaling what comes out" when it comes to video games?

Robobo

Hey Marty. Thanks for being one of my favorite Second Winders. I was wondering if you could talk about where we go when we die, and what kind of vidya games might be there?

Mrticketron

Just got back from Amsterdam yesterday and it was really cool trying to spy all the Space Invader street art that was around town. Thats all the vidjagame news i got :)

Jason Ferro

Marty appreciation day? Love it. What has been your favorite moment of Pokopia so far? Mine was watching the fossil Pokemon appear in my self made museum. I had no idea placing the fossils on display would make them spawn.

Th3P4tM4n

The Subnautica 2 news feels like a win, but I wonder if it's going to damage Unknown Worlds' relationship with Krafton in such a way that hurts the game moving forward.

Mopman43

Will you be playing Pokopia during the stream? Wanted to bring up, during Windbreaker the three of you brought up something in RE9 that seemed like an obvious cop-out, but my theory is that it was an intentional reference to the ending of RE Damnation where Leon displayed the ability to surgically remove Buddy’s Plaga. With a gun. (Not 100% serious)

Davsau

Hooray, Steel Ball Run is out of Netflix. Better watch it before Jensen Huang finds a way to put a goddawful AI filter on that too.

A Winged Potato

With the utopian paradise of Pokopia, do we have definitive proof that humans are terrible and Pokemon only fight because of humanity? I’ll hang up and listen

TooManySpreadsheets

I recently completed my 2025 new years resolution: listening to a whole bunch of stage musicals that I hadn't listened to before, starting in 1924 and working my way forward to 2025. I ended up listening to over 450 cast recordings, and came across some truly wonderful hidden gems. As someone who regularly does crazy deep dives out of passion, do you have any suggestions for how I can present something meaningful on this year-long project? Relatedly, if anyone in the world ever wants a musical theater recommendation, I can probably give you a good one. ;)

ImmenseCookie

What are we drinking round this fireside Marty? Plus paired snacks, naturally. Looking forward to spending some quality time with you 🫡

Juicy Jeff

Just shouting out with you in support of Retroid devices! Grabbed myself a Pocket 5 and stream my Steam library directly to it, the OLED screen and battery life are phenomenal! Great alternative to the Deck for busy-boys on the go!

Steady Goblin Wood

My son is due in June and I need some new games on switch 2 since it'll be my only option for a while. Any recos along the lines of Tunic or Deaths Door? I really love those games on handheld.

Inverse Skies

Not sure if you’re in a position to get one, but a steam deck worked wonders when I was playing games when my second child was a bit younger than she is now. Just the ability to suspend games / portability of it was fantastic. (I guess switch is very similar with a slightly different games pool)

Tommy Salty

Marty! With Nick travelling across the Old Continent, do you think he'll grow as a person and gamer? Do you think he's doing as the Romans do while in Rome? How much more sophisticated will Nick be having been to the places that are the roots of our culture?

Inverse Skies

I presume you did podcasts back in your IGN days? If I wanted to listen to them, when were you on them and what were they called?

Inverse Skies

(I like listening to old video game podcasts when I run. I’m currently listening to the electric hydra from 2012. For whatever reason it works for me).

Lucky D. Roux

on the weeb shit note, the One Piece live action adaptation has brought tons of curious new folks into the fandom which has been incredibly heartening to see. Are there any other adaptations that you've seen inspire such a groundswell of enthusiasm for an already well-established property that's beginning to tread new waters (I swear to god, no pun intended)

Inverse Skies

Or an alternative question, I’m curious to learn what video game magazines you exactly have in your collection?

Lucky D. Roux

I listen to these on monday so if marty reads this on the show, hi future me! If not, hi everybody!

AnewArtist

Glad you're still doing the Pod, Marty! You're probably my favorite personality of the channel! You check out the newest Paranormasight? The first one? Both have some cool stories and vibes. They have that 80s nostalgia that Famicom Detective Club has I feel like.

Brian Kenna

Conan talks about the Oscars joke planning in today's podcast: They had a board in the back with different jokes for different outcomes. Apparently they didn't have it last year and realized it would be useful.
