Every Single Video Game Is Afraid of GTA 6

Marty's latest video essay digs into the fact that now that Summer Game Fest is over and the fall video game release schedule is set, one thing is clear -- every single video game publisher and developer is afraid of Grand Theft Auto 6 and its November 19th, 2026 release date. i’ve held this opinion for a while but i do think gta vi is gonna be so fucking bad for the industry

Few things would be funnier than GTA being further delayed and watching the rest of the industry scramble.

Something I haven’t heard many people consider yet … what if GTA6 is bad? Maybe not a likely scenario, but I still remember what happened with Cyberpunk. An overhyped game from a popular developer, that was in development for a decade. I’m getting a bit of Déjà vu here. Or possibly PTSD.

If GTA6 is bad, it'll still sell well. But if GTA6 sells poorly, then the gaming industry will see untold damage done to it as investors pull out in droves. People talk about the first gaming crash because people stopped buying video games but a second crash wherein there aren't any investors in the industry is just as likely if GTA6 doesn't do well enough

Well, thankfully, there are always gonna be people like me that don't buy or play AAA-anything, so I'm going to just ignore GTA6 and focus on the indie games coming out around then. Or still playing indies from backlog, who knows :)

I think the sales numbers are a big concern because expectations are so high. How many copies does GTA6 need to sell to avoid coming in "below analyst expectations"? I can see a scenario where GTA6 sets sales records and still comes in below expectations leading to the company's stock dropping & investors getting out of gaming.

I’m just going to add that the basic version of this game will retail in Canada for $109. The ultimate edition (which is kinda the full game I guess?) is an eye watering $149. I can buy Castlevania almost three times for that price, and I’ll get a physical disc in the bargain. Even if it’s good, will people pay that or will they wait for a sale?
