I love when my video game protagonists are whiney losers who mostly just spout stoner grade swear words for every line while stumbling forward through the plot. It's a very good movie but it's like when they made "The Cellar" and some studio execs realized they could slap a Cloverfield monster on it and name it "10 Cloverfield Lane" and it would get a boost from being associated with existing IP.

At the risk of being crucified, I’m going to say something nice about Welcome to Raccoon City. It had some interesting ideas that are never fleshed out, but which could have made a good movie. Setting up conflict between Chris and Claire. Staging Raccoon City as a dying midwestern industrial town, and tying the zombie outbreak thematically with events like the Flint water crisis and any number of industrial accidents and chemical spills. Having the zombies retain a fragment of themselves so that they mutter incoherently while behaving erratically, an idea Capcom recycled into RE9. You could have made a good movie out of all that, but instead it’s buried under an effort to cram two games worth of plot, characters and lore into one movie while teasing sequels.

Obviously you are entitled to have a preference in what kind of game protagonist you enjoy playing, but deeply flawed protagonists make for excellent horror games. James Sunderland and Joel Miller are objectively worse people than Bryan and their horror games are among the best ever made. Plus, Bryan isn't so much a Video Game Protagonist (TM) as he is a video game PLAYER stand-in, and as such, his whining and swearing is 100% in character, because that's exactly what video game players sound like on the first playthrough of a horror game.

I want the next movie to explain how Baron Harkonnen found himself in Racoon City's sewers.

The flaws of the protagonist are def important to the narratives of some horror, but I would argue not most Resident Evil games. RE protags are typically more "power fantasy" types. I do like your second argument though about Bryan as a stand in for the player. That's a compelling point that hadn't occurred to me.

The three of us in my household all felt that he was basically us playing a new RE / horror game for the first time and that it was pretty on point. Particular lines such as remarking on the amount of padlocks for instance were things you could easily imagine a frustrated player saying under their breath.

Just watched the new Resident Evil a few hours ago, and I was very surprised by how much it focused on urgency. I did think the dialogue and script were iffy and Bryan could've acted a little less teen-like, but then again he is a young man embroiled in a dire situation so it makes sense. The beginning of the film was odd pertaining to Bryan's reactions as well.

I saw it at the weekend. As a huge fan of the games I think it captured the tone near perfectly. It felt like we were watching one of the stories of one of the NPCs that you find dead with a log with him. Or watching someone play an RE game for the first time. The final 3rd wasn't as strong... But in that regard it's exactly like the games. Probably the best live action video game adaptation I've ever seen.

I am not horror movie aficionado, but I like what I hear about organically adapting cinematic feel of games to big screen while giving it's own spin. It is definitely a way make it feel familiar yet refreshing. Using familiar language but tell your own story. I think Fallout sometimes succeeded in doing same, albeit from different angle.

Douglas Wykstra

I know this movie is a one-off for Cregger, but if Sony wants to treat his film as a franchise reboot, he has given them one major gift: he's created a version of the RE world that is goofy enough for Leon Kennedy to plausibly be a character in it.

Savage

Absolutely terrible take.

Marcus Cowen

Not a bad adaptation, shame it wasn't a great movie. The first half hour was good, then it face planted. I see it has resonated with a lot of people, glad it has found an audience. I can see why Cregger didn't want to get saddled with franchise BS. That was the weight holding him down.

JR

All good points. But I personally can't shake off the thought that the protagonist looks to me like a hobbit gone on the wrong adventure - which makes for a weird feeling in an RE movie...
