I remember playing the first GoW with a friend. One of the achievements was "kill 10,000 things". That basically summarizes the franchise.

This was my first Gears game, played it with my brother we had a damn blast, feels a little dated at times but was so fun,

I didn't think Yahtzee was going to review Gears of War: E-Day beyond the snark he had for it last week when talking about Onimusha and also the brief mention of it in last week's Semi-Ramblomatic, too, but I stand corrected😅

Yahtzee makes a good point about the intrinsic politics of games like Gears of War. One of the reasons I first got into Halo as a teenage dipshit was because the gameplay reminded me so much of Starship Troopers, a movie that a vaguely understood was a satire (well, I understood that the propaganda videos in the movie were funny on purpose), but which I mostly loved for its incredibly brutal bug-on-human violence and co-ed shower scenes. Halo's "humans versus the alien hordes" story is far too threadbare to make the action feel like anything other than a mindless good time, but Gears bringing in the mid-00s nu-metal/War on Terror aesthetics really makes the connection a lot more clear to my millennial brain. I'm not gonna pretend that I didn't enjoy chainsawing a Locust or 200 back when all that dreck was just the hotdog-flavored water we swam in, but I'm perfectly happy leaving it back in its decade.

Fully Ramblomatic angry protest rock track of the week (which will be fundamentally misunderstood by the usual suspects): Propagandist Dream Monster by Nine Dead Friends (from their album Can't Sleep For This Boot On My Neck)

The Robotnik bodies were a solid gold comedic choice. Bravo! 👏🧐

Hellraiser next!!!

I've found that using the term "cruel and stupid" to describe entities like the Locust pretty much sum up everything you need to know about what "black and white morality" usually means. To make a character completely unsympathetic, they have to be cruel and stupid. If they're cruel but intelligent, then they're admirable on some level because they're so good at their job. If they're kind and stupid then they're sympathetic and the audience wants them to be helped. But someone who enjoys inflicting pain on others and is simultaneously incapable of performing even the most basic tasks without immense amounts of help is someone that everyone, at the very best, loves to hate

I'll defend the simplicity of the franchise. It's hard as a working adult to find time to schedule couch co-op, so it can be months between sessions. As such, I don't want complex lore or puzzles in a lengthy co-op campaign. Just remembering what bits of the open maps you'd already done previously in the fifth game was a challenge. I'm not surprised the very things that make these games doable in co-op would be a bit shit solo. Maybe Marty needs to be dragged in as a co-op partner again to review these games.

This is really coolThis
