EA is truly the worst example of capitalism in the video game industry. Everything is a number to them and if it doesn't go up, it goes out. Also Nick I owe y'all a finders fee for Tape to Tape. Oh my God that game is so fun.

Next year’s fantasy league can just be you each pick 10 studios you think will survive the year. Points for releasing a game and based off reviews, points off for layoffs and even more for a closure.

LookItsChefEric

There's a lot to say about this closure all I can focus on is the impact this will have on the overall morale within gaming culture wit large. With such a long-standing pillar being shuttered in an almost vindictive way, you got to wonder what this does to the psyches of other game devs in and out of the AAA space.

What I hate the most is how much I understand the closure. Bioware has not been able to produce a solid critical and commercial success since Dragon Age Inquisition. It is true that a lot of the reason for it was EA meddling, but that doesn't change the cold, hard fact that the studio's returns have been steadily diminishing. But from Baldurs Gate to KotOR to Dragon Age to Mass Effect, Bioware truly helped define the western RPG. Truly the fall of a monument. I just hope the money grubbing scum suckers at Electronic Assholes sell of Biowares IPs to people who will appreciate them.

Andy Hunter

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups is always my #1. BioWare’s closure is sad indeed. I hope there will eventually be a silver lining of some of the devs forming their own studio and making similar games without EA’s interference.

Jakob Hjorth Hansen

Could you see a theoretical scenario where a Foundation is created to keep IPs out of license limbo. Some sort of Non-profit organization charged with acquiring and stewarding gaming IPs, handling applications from Devs to make games within the IP.

urb4nm

The one thing I cannot shake off about BioWare closure is that without BioWare there would be no Witcher 1 as we know it, and that's a real sliding doors moment for both Witcher and Polish game industry in general.

Insomnia Inc

Bioware shaped a lot of my late twenties so this feels not great, I wish I could say I was surprised but when you see the Saudis and Jared in charge of EA the kind of storyteller Bioware is famous for was on borrowed time to begin with. Love to think the ips would be sold off but then I remember so many that EA sits on like a dragon guarding a horde. Also the best candy are rockets. Always will be. Or when you were a kid and someone gave you an actual can of coke. That was a treasure.

Far Too Many Frogs

Honestly, this felt like the least surprising outcome. Doesn't mean it doesn't hurt, but all things considered after Mass Effect Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age: Veilguard, and all of the talent believe that created their masterpieces that this was inevitable even without the Saudi-Kushner acquisition.

In my teens when i played games the most, Bioware was my fav studio. Put so many hours into the ME trilogy and the early Dragon Age games, and got into KOTOR last year and had a good time with it. Will give Jade Empire a play at some point

VanillaSpooks

BioWare meant so much to me. Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Jade Empire, KOTOR, heck even Anthem I had some fun with. As an Albertan, BioWare was our game studio, it was the heart of the Alberta games industry. And EA shoved the knife to it.

Alpha Aquilae

BioWare is one of those studios that influenced so many others, influence that we still see today, so it's sad to see this happen.

Fuzzy Freestyle

I live in Edmonton and although the news is terrible, no one I know didn't see this coming. My friends and I did QA on Inquisition and even then we were predicting when EA would pull the plug. From there it was watching them slowly decline in the industries eyes over the last decade. They will be missed.

OhItsWren

The loss of BioWare is a tradegy for the entire industry. Their games inspired so many to enter the industry and showed so many that video games can be a legitimate narrative format.

KingRaptor28

#1 with chocolate: Almond Joy, #1 without is Sour Patch Kids. Where is the industry going? There is no reason to bank on new hardware. The "established titles" aren't innovative. Indies can have success, but they aren't pushing the "normie" to sink money into these titles. Is there any reason to be optimistic about the industry?

Anonymouse

Do you think the "Save Mass Effect" campaign has any chance of success, and do you think the unfinished game would be good if it was completed?

Inverse Skies

BioWare had some rather valuable IP, I can only presume these will be farmed off to other studios to try and relaunch or recreate some of their famous but ultimately stuttering series?

Steady Goblin Wood

Not my kind of games, but an industry staple and trend setter. Just overall a really weak ending to a strong story and indicative of what's to come for other studios I'm sure.

Riley Lemon

Many of the current tech giants, like EA, have their roots in dominating the relatively young industry in the late 90s and early 00s. As we are clearly now in a period of hard reset at least to the western games industry, I wonder to what extent is this the start of an inevitable cycle of boom and bust or is it possible for the current AA developers to make better decisions than everyone did in the 2010s during the mass consolidations? Do you think it’s possible to stay independent long term? Would it be possible to merge more sparingly into a larger number of “sustainable-giants” perhaps that would be more specialized in the types of games that they produce?

Horus

It is sad. I know in the end the conversation will be about them not putting out a game that was considered the best of the best but I will always respect Bioware for being the most queer triple A studio to do it. To the point that even Veilguard, which wasn’t their best, has a trans character who was happy and proud to be trans just in the game and not. I don’t think we will see that from a triple A studio again I think.

Ishterical

My favorite part of the first Mass Effect game was trying see how high I could make the M35 Mako jump on alien planets

Adam Seidel

I played through the Mass Effect trilogy for the first time this year. What an incredible legacy to leave behind, those games hold up so well and I feel that it’s insane we’re not getting another one in what could be considered a second golden age for rpgs.

Saxifrage

Jorkin one out for Bioware

melchar

OMG yes! I could make the Mako fricking DANCE! I loved running around planets on it and never understood the dislike others had for the little jumpy vehicle that COULD. <3

melchar

In the Almond Joy/Mounds debate, I like Mounds. 100 Grand bars are better tho IMO. I loved BioWare and how much they let players run characters that could do dang near anything. I did not like that during the last decade they got bogged down with 'in your face performative political correctness' since I think that self-limited their creativity. They will be missed.

Ishterical

Yeah! I was sad when they got rid of it.
