NEW PODCAST EPISODE! (very late lol)

Vernon says K-pop and pop are increasingly sounding the same… and while I get his point, I think he’s missing some VERY important nuance. I get into why so many groups on the same label (SKZ & NEXZ) start to overlap in sound and why fans get so defensive about admitting when artists clearly share influences.

Also discussed: the BTS/Chris Brown backlash, Hearts2Hearts’ wig controversy, ALD1 finally proving to me they CAN make good music, TUIDE showing some serious promise and Gunil’s lawyer statement!

The way you randomly throw in zodiac references kills me (in a good way) 😭 A couple of thoughts: hybe girl group releases this year have been 100% misses for me so I’m curious about how tuide will turn out. it’s a strong year for the girlies in general sooo they need to stand out somehow!! for the CB stuff - I’m not a bts fan so I’ve been looking at it with an outsider’s lens I guess and I just find this to be so egregious. I get that a lot of idols trained with his music and were inspired by him but it’s 2026 now. I have no patience for it 😭 also I think there are levels of “bad” like listening to a song on a live is… not great. I was also v upset with Ricky recently for covering one of his songs on tour. But like… straight up attending a concert (I bet a lot of idols would if he came to Korea 💀) and then taking a photo is like… yikessss!!! And RM in particular sells himself as some enlightened feminist soooo… yeah. Stuff like this makes me so tired of this industry. every other day it’s like pick your fighter: colorism/racism/anti-Blackness/fatphobia/misogyny WHEW. but then I take a step back and remember I don’t know these people at all!

My take on the chris brown thing, unbiased because i'm not a fan of bts or CB, is that there's nothing wrong with separating the art from the artist. sometimes the best art is produced by the worst people and oftentimes pain is what fuels creativity. people act like they'd never do it but then they happily buy tickets and stream guys like king von - murderers who rap about how much they love murders, how often they do murders, who they hope to murder in the future. Should people be clutching their pearls when they see someone at a drill concert? like oh my goodness me oh my don't you know you're sending the wrong message about murder? people might think doing murders is socially acceptable if you attend! so if we can accept that people can make peace with the fact that they're finally supporting a murderer, why is CB a bridge too far? I don't think celebrities are bad people just like I don't think the thousands of other people that were in attendance are bad people. By simply attending a CB concert, you aren't making a statement about DV any more than watching Harry potter makes you a terf.

I mean jk rowling openly brags about using the money she makes from hp and her status as a popular author to fund anti-trans legislation. people like CB are emboldened by having such a large fanbase that they think they can get away with anything. I don’t think separating art from artist exists when the artist is alive to reap the benefits financial or otherwise of people who ignore what they do and/or the art itself is a reflection of the person. art is political and doesn’t exist in a vacuum. just my 2 cents. everyone will have their own hard line they won’t cross.

Ever since I heard that ALD1 highlight medely....I'm EXCITED!!!

rowie | hyuka bias :3

js my 2 cents here </3 I think BTS being cancelled for Chris Brown is 1000% a good thing (and I dont think its ever possible to separate art from the artist) but imo they have done worse than attend a concert of an abuser. its a bit disappointing to see all the Kpop fans gather together to "cancel" BTS when we shouldve simply called out their (and other groups) behavior before it got to this point lol .

The decision to boycott an artist for past indiscretions is a personal one. like you say, everyone has their OWN red line. What I take issue with is folks trying to hold people "accountable" for what essentially amounts to not having that red line in the same place as them. It feels arrogant to me to feel one has the right to demand compliance with their own personal belief system. If a fan decides to forgive CB because it happened x amount of years ago, he has shown growth, xyz, whatever reason, why should they be held accountable because those folks feel differently?. Also, I looked up CBs history because I had a hunch - The guy was six when his parents divorced. He stayed with his mother, whose boyfriend was violently abusive. Guy shot himself in the head in front of them (and survived). The guy was blinded, and he directed his rage at CBs mother. According to him he was pissing in his room, because his mom was getting beaten every night, he was too scared to actually see it. Maybe I am a bit biased in some respects because I survived similar childhood trauma. I know firsthand how hard it is to break intergenerational cycles of violence . The people you model behaviors after, the people who you are supposed to learn values from, are your abusers. Trauma at that age physically alters your brain. It fundamentally alters the way you understand and process emotions. Oftentimes you don't even recognize dysfunction because you normalize what you grow up around. i was like 23 before i learned that most dads don't get violent when they drink. So if CBs story is accurate, he was exposed to near daily, extreme IPV, from six years old to the time he moves out at 16. He was 19 years old when he assaulted Rihanna. At my big age, that's a child still. I guess what im trying to say is, we act like we think celebrities are some abstraction.

i had a lot more to say but I'm struggling to be concise and coherent. My general point I think was that I don't understand why ya'll think it[s not acceptable to treat these celebrities like actual human beings, with flaws, but who are capable of growth. Who are worthy of forgiveness if people are willing to grant it. Chris brown isn't some monster. Not a cartoon villain. He's a guy who is severely fucked up as a result of persistent, extreme childhood trauma. shit I can't really complete whatever point i was trying to make because my CPTSD is being triggered by writing this sorry draw your own conclusions of what i was trying to say

Paragraphs PLS! These blocks of texts are so hard to read lol but yes

I completely agree with this except, Chris Brown has been continuously posting and making jokes about what he's done. And he's never apologised for it. I also think this is more of a blow up over multiple things that people have been disappointed about regarding BTS over the years. Now I'm not a fan so I have no say in this but your point would be great if CB actually wanted to move on and become a better person.

Being a K-pop fan is so exhausting sometimes. I just listen to the music, watch the content and go on about my day.
