Melissa

so i really needed this as a distraction from my pain and upcoming nervousness. i fell bad on concrete and have to have surgery next week. plate and 2 screws put in, sobbing. but if echo can do all she does, maybe i can do this?

darcie is about to be so confused omg can't wait :P

Man I love this episode so much. Such a gutsy risk making this. It feels almost unfathomable that they were able to do it. Obviously the fact that it wasn't broadcast helped a great deal. It's hard to imagine any network agreeing to a season finale that gives away the end, is drastically different visually, features entirely new characters & and our "big lead" with less than 2 minutes of screentime.

I mentioned in Discord that I thought Darcie would recognize Zack Ward. I thought it would be from a A Christmas Story or Titus so of course it turned out to be some movie I've never heard of before 😆

i don't see the captions option on this video for some reason

The "I haven't showered in a year" woman was coiffed, and had shaved her armpits and legs fairly recently. Was she dry shaving, because that seems dangerous during an apocalypse.

This is SUCH a fun one. I love time skips so much. The mystery??? Piecing stuff together?? I live for it so much. I fucking love me a good "What the fuck happened between then and now?"

"Haunted" took a real drubbing online when it was released. It was still understandable to an extent. It ended up being a glimpse at what was to come though. We see that the Actives contracts aren't worth the paper they were printed on. As soon as Rossum had the pieces in place those bodies were as good as gone to the rich & powerful.

Cool to see Clayton Rohner here as the flashback client. He's a great character actor & was the co-lead in the forgotten by everyone (except me) G vs E. His co-star Richard Brooks was already in the Whedonverse verse having played Jubal Early in Firefly "Objects in Space"

I was one of the few that recommended saving it for the end, but that was mostly for continuity. It's easy to forget some of the details by the time you reach the end of the series. I would definitely watch it again when you get there.

One thing I really love about this episode is that it doesn't baby the audience at all. It drops you right into the middle of a warzone, 10 years after the episode before it, follows brand new characters and trusts the audience to keep up and figure out what's going on. It's really well written in that way. The scene where "crazy Topher" breaks down in Adele's arms gives me shivers every time I see it. Topher (and the show in general) asks so many important philosophical questions. Topher's fractured mind remembering that his inventions inadvertently brought about the apocalypse asking things like, "if I think I can figure things out, is that curiosity or arrogance?" and saying "I know what I know" over and over is heartbreaking.

This is exactly how you do science fiction: set a hypothetical and then explore the ultimate implications. I can't say much more but they really went full blast in less time than was planned.

Haven't watched this in forever, and I have to agree that young actress was excellent - her Caroline was spot on. Maybe worth a re-watch at the end. Fun fact, you didn't recognize Felicia Day, the female lead, who you saw as one of the potentials in the last season of Buffy. She's been in a gajillion other things as well, notably Supernatural and her own web-series "The Guild".

A piece of trivia. The episode closes on the song "Remains" which was written by Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon (who also wrote the script for the episode), with vocals done by Maurissa Tancharoen. In fact there is a music video that was filmed for this. Not just a fan made thing with scenes from the show but a legit music video. Here is the youtube link, it's a cool watch: https://youtu.be/ZNtORr6RsJ4?si=Q2J0tkrNfTfPqHqb

See, people are right on waiting on this episode. I dont know how majority says watch it early. In areas were they showed it understand why people didn't watch se2. Why watch it, I know the end. As they switch channels

One more thing: I've had acting teachers tell me that little kids are all naturally amazing actors because they don't have anything internally distracting them. I'm sorry but that's just not true - I've seen a ton of terrible performances from kids who don't understand the material they're going through at all. That little girl in this episode killed it through the entire episode and I can't state how impressive it was.

Time to piece the gaps in season 2!

I love seeing Dominic back after it seemed like he was doomed to rot in the attic. He also gets a great big "I told you so" in as everything he told Adelle would happen in 1X10 ended up happening.

Damn so many great actors in this show... Amy Acker, Fran Kranz, Olivia Williams, Enver Gjokaj,... I know Olivia has had a good movie career but gosh I wish we would see more of them in TV or film

Melissa

Darcie, not pertaining to Dollhouse and I know you just started a new limited show reaction. But maybe after that you could do Jericho? Great 1 season and season 2 is only 7 episodes. Starring Skeet Ulrich aka original Scream killer.

I know I'm in the minority, but I'm going to give my honest opinion (and it's okay if you disagree) I HATE this episode as episode 13. There are so many reasons that I can't even explain until the show is over. I'm not saying it's a bad episode (although... reasons that I can't say until the show is over... it could have, and would have, been better if it had been made later, had it been given the proper forethought.) I don't understand the people who say the only reason they watched season 2 was because of this episode. Season 1 on it's own was so incredible and stuffed with so much plot, so many twists, and ultimately so many moral questions of where this could lead, I don't think you need to see where it leads in order to want to watch more. They learned from Firefly and absolutely did the opposite of the slow burn, years long plan. Ultimately it's a good episode, but I get so frustrated watching it as episode 13 when I know what the next season holds. I'll be very interested to hear you take when you finish the series. Then I'd be very interested to know your take after you rewatch the series! lol. I find that having watched the entire series about 20 times or more that I have very strong opinions on this episode. I very much did enjoy your reaction at the beginning though, because I think that's most people's reaction. "Did I click the wrong show?!" lol. It's fun. And yeah, the cast was great, the flashbacks are great, the twist with the little girl being the bad guy and then Zone tricking her were all great. Again, not a bad episode (except for the things I can't talk about for several more months!) I just have my reasons for strongly disliking it's placement (some of which I can't talk about now either.) I'm very excited to see season 2 with you, especially the next episode and episode 4 of season 2. There are a lot of exciting things to come. I'm really happy you're enjoying the show. And I'll still be happy if you decide you firmly believe episode 13 should indeed be episode 13. lol. People got really upset with my view point last time, but while I despise it's placement, it's really not that deep. lol. Sorry for such a long comment, but I have big feelings! That's a sign of a good show! :)

I really forgot a lot about Dollhouse since it aired - including this episode (although it came back to me in pieces). I’m as confused as if I never watched Season Two (something else I guess I don’t remember). It’s kind of fun rewatching a show this way.

Melissa

"Home sweet home" - Echo Also said by Spike when he returned on Buffy. I'm so behind on this, but my injury, surgery, and recovery got in the way. This episode? So so good! Your face when that little kid started shooting was perfection. Can't wait to see how you go with season 2!
