Sending more hugs. This season is a rough one.

Koz

I had a feeling this would be a rough experience.

Yay, I'm so glad I can now speak my mind without spoiling anything. I must confess: I hated Prue, she was my least favorite sister. I was actually happy when she died (sorry) and Paige is literally my favorite one. I love how Charmed evolves from this point on. I think of season 1-3 as a prelude for the real Charmed. I know this is not the most popular opinion, but it is what it is. Last season Prue went through a lot of episodes where she learned how to deal with death and grief, so I think her arc was beautifully done, her character felt fully developed and it was her time. Even though I might be a little bit biased, I really believe she and her story were complete and that letting her go was the best decision for the show. I didn't necessarily like how they jumped from the cliffhanger into this episode, it feels like something is missing in between... but I guess it was the only way they could do it. There was a lot of tension behind the scenes, they thought it would end by letting Shannen go, but... it didn't. Paige is such a great addition to the show, I love her, and how her powers differ from the other sisters because of her Whitelighter side, which gives us a lot more insight about Leo's powers too. I think you'll like her a lot. You'll (probably) need to update the cover for the Charmed tag lol And, lastly, I think this episode hits a lot harder today, after Shannen Doherty's passing. Althought I disliked Prue, I have nothing bad to say about the actress, I think she was really brilliant and talented, and I was truly sad to see her go... This episode became really cathartic because of that, it gives us a moment to remember her and grive not just for her character, but for the artist that so brilliantly brought her to life. RIP Shannen 🖤

This was my introduction to Charmed. S4 is one of my absolute favorites, and I loved the introduction of Paige. She’s my favorite, and Rose McGowan playing her just adds to it.

There was a lot of tension on set between Doherty and Milano. So they purposefully had the Season 3 finale end in a way where any of the sisters could die off screen and it wouldn't be totally jarring for the audience. This was my first time watching this since Shannen Doherty passed and it was very hard. Especially knowing how close she and Holly Marie Combs were in real life. They were best friends for over 30 years. So, seeing her grieving like this was very difficult to watch. Also, the show definitely feels different going forward but I do think they (and Rose McGowan) did a great job.

Oh boy, here we are… I’m excited but also nervous for you to dive into this season and this next chapter of Charmed 😬 While I LOVE Paige and think that Rose brings a wonderful new element to the show, I definitely miss Prue and Shannen so much. She was incredible in that role! These first few eps of season 4 always make me cry no matter how many times I’ve seen them! It’s a widely known thing that there was a lot of tension and conflict among the lead actresses of the show (Particularly Shannen and Alyssa, who played Phoebe) and things came to a head in season 3, with Shannen unfortunately being fired from the show at the end of it. I’m not going to speculate on details because it’s become gossip magazine drama over the years with a lot of “she said/she said” back and forth and people taking sides and I have no interest in that lol At the end of the day no one really knows what went down except for the girls themselves and they each have their own perspective on things and I want to keep things respectful for all involved. I can say that viewers back then did know Prue would be gone this season before the season premiere (it was in all the tabloids) so, many of us were just waiting to see how they would deal with the fallout. And to the show’s credit, I do think they did the best they could with what they had, to pay homage to the legacy of Prue while moving the story forward. I’m not spoiling anything but i do feel that Prue isn’t forgotten within the show from this point and we will see how they deal with her absence. It’s a new era and things are certainly going to be different, but there are still soooo many stories left to tell in this world and I can’t wait for you to see it and to see how Paige fits into her new role!

Hey, remember that memory powder that Sam had in the episode by the lake. That would've really come in handy with the investigator. Wish we remembered about it in this episode!

Rae

I absolutely adore Holly's acting in this episode. I think she kills it in all the emotional scenes.

Rae

Yeah, it's a little awkward jumping in without getting all the wrap-up of what happened in the finale. Essentially, we just have to accept that Leo assisted Cole in rescuing Phoebe from the Source and his minions, and that's why they didn't get back in time to save both Prue and Piper. Leo only had time to heal one of them, and he chose to save Piper.

I first watched Charmed as a child intermittently from s5 I think as it was only on TV. My parents then baught me the DVD boxset of all 8 seasons and at first I actually struggled to accept Prue! I'd never known her. And when I watched the end of S3 I thought that there was an episode missing from the DVD because I couldn't understand her off screen death. I have been excited and scared for you to reach this point because my reaction was from such a young mind, I really liked that you understood more about what possibly happened BTS and this allowed you to fill in more gaps to a degree. Prue was an incredible character but Paige is also worth a shot imo. So excited to see what you think to the show moving forward.

Those predictions you had for the 4th season both made me sad and made me a little excited, as painful as this is

That being said, Holly Marie Combs absolutely kills it this season. Truly just...amazing work, I'd argue the best of her career

TheLoungingPotato

I forgot just how much I love Paige but then that genuine and sincere "Don't hurt me, okay?" really sealed the deal on reminding me. What a sweetheart

Shaun Stacy

Also, if you want the behind-the-scenes story as to what happened, you can listen to Shannen Doherty's podcast "Let's Be Clear" in a two-parter she did with Holly Marie Combs. It doesn't spoil anything for the rest of the series.

This episode makes me cry. Prue is one of my all time comfort characters. Piper’s grief breaks my heart

Dannielle

Yeah there were behind the scenes issues that resulted in Shannen leaving the show and honestly I think the writers really did do the best they could to make it work, and it does work. I guess they're really lucky that we already set up Patty and Sam being together. I'm always both happy and sad at this point. Sad that we never got to see who Prue could have become but also I love Paige and would have hated never getting to know her. Piper is my favourite character but Prue and Paige are like tied for second spot.

Dannielle

Also I love how you already pointed out the changing of the sibling dynamics, with Piper now becoming the older sister and Phoebe becoming the middle sister. It's really great to see how that affects each of the characters and the show. I do think this is my favourite dynamic of the sisters.

I had such love for Prue that I really fell off after this. Shannon/Prue really felt like the main character for me even though it’s about the three of them that I had a really hard time staying engaged. I remember some things to come, but a lot of the episodes coming up will be first watches for me, and I’m excited to give poor Paige a second chance.
