Stephen takes over in Season 5. Plus he also co-wrote Sherlock… so plenty more Mr Moffatt ahead of you :-) . … And we all love River. And your reactions (mwah!) .

THIS is how you do a low budget episode. I don’t think there’s a better example honestly lol. Honestly watching the episode you forget you’re in just one place practically the whole time. This has to be one of my favorite one part episodes. So much accomplished with little to no visual effects. Just great acting, dialogue and music. 10/10, I will always sing its praises. A little haunting from Rose doesn’t hurt either lol

Fantastic episode. I liked that we didn't find out what it was - adds to the terror factor.

What an episode! I know you haven't watched it but Jethro's actor plays Merlin in... Merlin so it's always fun to see him too :)

This is probably the highest quality stretch of storytelling in new who, from Silence in the Library to Midnight, and the good news for you is it continues being top notch into next episode, and to a very slightly lesser extent the rest of the season.

This one is a fan favorite, but I don't like it at all. I can see how creative the writing is (and don't get me wrong, despite Steven Moffat being my favorite writer, i know Russel T Davies can be amazing too), but I don't like how it makes me feel. I guess I don't enjoy much this mystery/suspense/horror theme. In general, I also don't like the "stranded in a random ship with a bunch of strangers" kind of episode (in fact, I don't even like Satan's Pit, or 42...). I can see it is really solid and well written, but I could totally do without it forever.

The beauty and terror of Midnight is in all the unanswered questions we ALL craned our necks trying to see what the driver saw out the window, but never could 😂 no name for the alien/monster, we just call it “the midnight monster” no idea what it looks like, how it can survive on the planet, even the Doctor doesn’t know! We didn’t even get to figure out Skye’s TEA!!! Why was she so scared? And they only won bc of one woman’s ultimate sacrifice 😭 Rachel, this is serious…

Did I mention we’re in the middle of a generational run again btw? x

I forgot how good the tension builds with the paranoia of the group escalating as mob mentality starts to form 😭 that’s the real scary part the one time the Doctor’s charming “I’m very clever” attitude does more harm than good

Xander Martin

Just before the titles, when he says “what could possibly go wrong”, there’s a clearly visible green screen behind him that the post production team just simply forgot to edit out, and it’s never been fixed 😂

This is one of my fav episode of DW, top three for sure. The building of the tension is so well done. So simple, yet so gripping. For me it’s a masterpiece, in particular in regards of the exploration of the character of the Doctor. The thing that fascinates me about this ep, is that it takes all of the Doctor’s "strengths", and turns them against him. It can be argued that the Doctor’s "superpower" is actually his voice; it’s the expression of his brain and wit. The Doctor, as a hero, does not fight with muscles or weapons, he talks. A lot. Take away his voice and he is powerless. In the same way, all of the Doctor’s traits that people tend to accept at face value are turned on their head here, and used against him: - his arrogance ("because I’m clever!") It makes this particular bunch of humans distrustful of him - his mystery: he goes by "The Doctor", usually people accept that. Not here though. The fact that he can’t provide a name makes him suspicious (and when he used his usual - frankly ridiculous - "John Smith", they laugh in his face) - his lack of credentials: he takes charge but "what sort of Doctor are you anyway?" - his otherness "you call us humans as if you’re not one of us!" He usually can talk himself out of most situations: he doesn’t have superpowers. A bunch of hostile humans can totally get rid of him in the right situation. Ordinary humans. It’s horrifying. The important thing to note about all of what I just tried to articulate, is that NONE of it would have happened had Donna (or any other companion) be present. This is a prime example of the function of the companion in the Doctor’s life. They are the bridge between him and ordinary people. Had Donna be present, she would have tempered his arrogance and made him relatable by proxy to all of these people. Alone he is vulnerable. He is super rattled by this experience. Control was taken from him and that’s not something he is used to; but also it’s worth noting that this was done by ordinary humans - humans he actually took the time to befriend. For an eternal lonely being in love with humanity: that one stung, a lot.

I love this episode so much. It shows how much you can do with so little. Just a few people in one location.

A moody Goth teen named Jethro might actually be the most outrageous thing about this episode

The Professor being a character that shows almost no critical thinking is a nice touch.

I would love to see this story performed as a stage play.
